Haven't seen many films as of late. An epic FM09 save has kept me busy and of course the FM10 demo just came out. Sooooo, this is pretty much all of it, besides a rewatch of
Click (god, Kate Beckinsale is so hot):
Man on Wire (2008), dir. James Marsh – Believe the hype! It is every bit as exhilarating and jawdropping as many critics would have you believe. It is absolutely exquisitely shot, the "talking heads" interviews work very well in this setup whereas they're often a nuisance or a break in the action in other films/docs. None of the garnish draw the attention away from the centre showpiece, which is every bit as fantastic as it should be. My fingers and toes kept tingling for an hour or so after I watched it.
9/10
Looking for Eric (2009), dir. Ken Loach – A very sweet and heartfelt film but at the same time serious, both in subject matter and in execution. Even though it's watchable just for the appearances of Cantona, several other performances make this film recommended viewing for anyone. The characters all seem very realistic and believable and especially the performances from Steve Evets, Gerard Kearns and the utterly fantastic John Henshaw. Ooh, ah, Cantona!
8/10
The Aristocrats (2005), dir. Paul Provenza – A magnificent, fast-paced, faster cut documentary that describes
the Aristocrats joke, a joke often told as a show-off piece from one comedian to another, backstage or otherwise. This is one of the funniest films I have ever seen and also a great look behind the scenes of the business and of course a bunch of
great, great commentary from some of my absolute heroes. To name just a few: the inimitable and forever unsurpassable George Carlin, Chris Rock, Eddie Izzard, Robin Williams, Trey Parker & Matt Stone, Eric Idle, Gilbert Gottfried, Bob Saget, Billy Connolly, Don Rickles, Jon Stewart, Lewis Black etc., etc. I should warn you, though, if you have no interest in the people interviewed, this is probably not for you. For me, though:
10/10
Antichrist (2009), dir. Lars von Trier – Let's get this out of the way: this film is
sick. There's no other word, really, but then again it's definitely one of the reasons I love films, just the surprises you can walk into, even if you have extensive knowledge of the plot/premise beforehand. I don't know if it makes sense, but it's sick in a very interesting and awesome way. Not as much a
horror film in the sense that horrific things do occur but more it's about the feelings that coarse through you as you watch these things. All that aside, it is absolutely amazingly shot and post-produced (prologue and epilogue might be the most beautiful shots produced, ever.) by the brilliant longtime von Trier contributor Anthony Dod Mantle of Slumdog Millionaire fame. Antichrist is an experience you cannot miss.
9/10
Futurama - Bender's Big Score (2007), dir. Dwayne Carey-Hill – To end on a more cheery note, here's a riproaringly hilarious flick. I hadn't seen
any Futurama beforehand but I think I might have to, now, as this easily trumps the somewhat "meh" Simpsons Movie. Now, this is more like it and it's truly a great ride.
