If you want to play a 4-2-3-1 wide, it's not a flat formation, it's not asymmetric, and you are using wingers. You are using an AMC, that means you need to play fluid. Roles for fluid style.

how to i set up a 4-4-2 counter since it's a flat formation. Per your instructions i have to play very fluid. do i have to use two RPMs in central midfield what about wide midfielders do they both have to be WPM.Thanks

what approach do u think works best for an away tactic?? counter maby or defend? thanks

Yes, two RPMs and two WPMs. You can't setup a classic, pure counter approach. You will get play through defence style.

Depends. If opponent is stronger and attacks you, you would do well to counter them. If they will keep men behind ball, you should try to control the match. That is why you should probably train standard, counter and control tactics. Always start the match with standard, observe opponent, and if necessary switch to a specialised plan. I would recommend defend only against clubs a few leagues above and stronger then yours, and attack only against really weak teams.

This is really a interesting tread...... I was looking for something like this, to discuss about it...... And your guidelines are really helpful who like me wants an understanding of the entirely game...... I really struggle, to understand what the opposition is doing, I mean, if it s attacking or defending etc etc..... Can you help me to have an general understanding? I'll appreciate so much and may have a full enjoy of the game

Well, if all of their players are in your half, with their center backs around the midfield line, they are attacking you. The 3D view sucks, and it doesn't look like real football at all, but if you see their players running toward your player with the ball immediatelly, they are trying to close you down, and win the ball early, meaning they are attacking, or trying to control the match. If you see that happens, and they attack quickly after winning the ball, your best bet is to stay deeper and try to counter them. If you see them moving slowly with the ball, working their way up, and gradually building their attack and keeping possession, your best bet is to try and close them down early and control the match. The perfect football match will always end 0-0, meaning you both attacked and defended perfectly. You can try to go counter against a counter team, but it would look like a cat and mouse game, both teams trying to pass around and draw opposition forward, so it's a game of nerves. The less disciplined team will most likely lose. You can also try to control against a controling team, but it's likely to be a match full of cards, injuries, and many goals on both sides.

Thanks for sharing, I've had a difficult time adapting to the new tactics and match engine, as I've only just recently been able to stop playing FM 2012, but this is a good foundation and you've helped me get a better understanding of how I put my own ideas into the game.

Currently I'm playing a wide 4-2-3-1 on Control with a fluid shape and TI's to match, and I was wondering whether it makes a difference if I change the wingers(attack) to inside forwards(attack)? Like you suggested I've got an AM(attack) and a DLF(S), will there be enough space for the inside forwards to do their thing or would a 4-1-2-2-1 formation be more beneficial? On a good run, with an important game coming up, so don't want to experiment too much ATM. Thanks in advance=)

I would use inside forwards only If I had someone else stretching them wide, like attacking fullbacks or wingbacks. That should not be the case in your setup.

Hey guys, I need help of it is not a problem. I want to play control football, solid at the back and lethal up front. So how should I be setting my TI's, shape, roles and most importantly formation? If someone could direct me like the thread did a bit, but I am still not too sure and I don't want to mess things up too early. Thanks, cheers! :)

Thanks for your quick reply. Can I still use wingers with stronger opposite feet on either side or is this just as inefficient as in FM 12? I have Douglas Costa(left footed AMR) and Adem Ljajic(right footed AML), would be a shame if I had to sell them.
