Gutting.

4th of January 2019

The players I'd agreed deals for outside the transfer window arrived today, let's meet them

DYLAN CONNOLLY - BRAY WANDERERS - €90,000
View attachment 110042
One of the conditions I had to meet when given the job was that I would sign young players and I've started that here with Connolly, the wingers at the club were fairly old with Gaffney and Dennehy being 29 and 32 respectively so we needed some fresh blood and we found that in Connolly who gives us more options out wide

JOEL COOPER - GLENAVON - FREE TRANSFER

View attachment 110041
Another signing, another young winger. This one from north of the border as I travelled to old adversaries Glenavon, nicked their best player and put him in my team. He's a good crosser and fairly fast, I like him

ELLIOTT PARKER - CEFN DRUIDS - FREE TRANSFER

View attachment 110040
One for the future, you might say, Elliott has bags of potential and will sit in the Under 19s for a bit

SEAN REILLY - LOUGHGALL - €4,300

View attachment 110039
One of my favourite players from my time at Loughgall, we already have a talented defence but if he can progress the way he should then he'll be in the team in no time

TONY O'NEILL - GLENAVON - €30,000

View attachment 110038
The folks at Glenavon must hate me! Not only have I taken their best player, but their second best player as well! O'Neill is a great prospect and, despite his tender age will lead the line for us this season

ADAM MCDONNELL - IPSWICH - €50,000

View attachment 110037
Proof that the Irish sides have a pretty good pull? McDonnell made 27 appearances for Ipswich in the Championship last season bu has left the Tractor Boys and come home to Ireland

SCOTT WILSON - DUNGANNON SWIFTS - €35,000

View attachment 110036
Northern Ireland is home to some top talents and we've picked up another one here in Wilson. He's only 18 but is probably already good enough for our first team and could go on to play for Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland one day (Dependent on progression and who he chooses)

ST PAT'S SPLASH CASH ON MURPHY REPLACEMENT
View attachment 110030
Following the St Patrick's board's controversial decision to sell star goalkeeper Greg Murphy to Celtic without consulting manager Matthew Hawkins, Hawkins has been desperately looking for a replacement with not long to go until the start of the season

Fortunately for fans of St Patrick's as well as Hawkins, they have found one in Colin McCabe, who's joined St Patrick's from Derry City €220,000

Murphy, who was sold for €750,000, was linked with a loan move back to Ireland but that never materialised, forcing Hawkins to look elsewhere and he's signed the 22-year-old former Celtic trainee to become his new number one

A great start to the season! This is my biggest win as St Patrick's boss and the new players seemed to gel instantly and seemed a lot sharper than that the opposition, I'm going to put that down to the fact that we played 7 friendlies

What was that about our biggest victory? Scratch that, this is our biggest win now! We blew the champions Shamrock Rovers away here as we banged five goals past them in the Irish version of the Community Shield. Only downside is Colin McCabe will be missing for 2 months with a fractured wrist

ST PAT'S BRING IN MIDFIELD REINFORCEMENTS

View attachment 109493
St Patrick's Athletic have acted swiftly following the news of star midfielder Callum Reilly's injury by bringing in two midfielders within days of each other

The first of these signings was that of young midfielder Marc IJzermann, who's been brought in from Ajax for €65,000

IJzermann, 20, never played for Ajax's first team, instead making 6 appearances for Jong Ajax in the Jupiler League and scoring one goal before moving to Dublin
View attachment 109492

The second and most expensive of the two signings was that of Aaron McEneff, who's joined St Patrick's for €350,000 from Premier League rivals Derry City

The Northern Irish born midfielder, who has 3 Under 21 caps for the Republic of Ireland, started his career at St Pat's manager's old adversaries Institute before joining Tottenham Hotspur

McEneff never played for Spurs, instead finding himself back in his native Derry, for whom he made 103 league appearances over 5 seasons

11 games left and a 5 point lead, I could get used to this

My European adventures had so far taken me to some pretty cold places, Iceland, Denmark and Poland spring to mind, so one of the big plusses of being drawn against Portuguese side Vitoria de Setubal in the Third Qualifying Round is that I would, for once, be experiencing a warmer climate

Another one of the big plusses was that this lot are beatable. I rate them as worse than Lech Poznan, a team whom we had comfortably dispatched in the last round and I had no fears going into the first leg, which was being played in the Aviva Stadium, home of the national team.

My lack of fear was soon rewarded as we played the visitor off the park, recording a solid 2-0 victory before travelling to Portugal, which is where we are currently

Despite our domestic and European success, the club are in the ****. Big style. We're over €800,000 in the hole and I feel that we're going to have to get to at least the playoffs if we want to survive, I haven't told the players but its a huge burden on my shoulders as we travel to Portugal

We went with our narrow 4-3-2-1, with Matuesz Hewelt in goal, Nolan, *****, Desmond and Field in defence, McEneff, Wilson and McDonnell in midfield, Liam Kelly and Kevin Morgan as our more advanced midfielders with Tony O'Neill up front. Let's do this.

The expected total football never arrived early on, with the players looking nervous and the match scrappy, Setubal didn't help matters by carving us open 27 minutes in, fortunately they missed. We weren't so lucky 6 minutes later when a monumental ****-up from Sean ***** allowed them to take the lead, they should have scored just before half-time as well, clearly a tactical re-think is in order.

I gave the lads a bollocking, David Cawley came on for Adam McDonnell and we were underway again.

The bollocking soon paid off, as Liam Kelly won the ball in their half, played in O'Neill who whipped the ball across for Kevin Morgan who tapped home. 1-1.

The game soon died down as Setubal desperately searched for a goal, allowing us to calm down and play our game, which we did as we constructed a sublime passing move that went from back to front before allowing Tony O'Neill to smash home his 44th of the season. 2-1.

We looked comfortable, until the 75th minute that is, when ***** cocked up again and allowed them to equalise. Idiot. They kept pushing and 12 minutes later they regained their lead, 3-2 and I'm starting to panic, that panic soon left as a Setubal player received a second yellow for tripping Scott Wilson. Happy days.

Anyway we held on and lost 3-2 but it was the best 3-2 loss ever

Looking slightly nervy at the moment to be honest

Back in Europe and back in Portugal. We played this lot off the park at the Aviva Stadium and are in a great position to qualify for the Europa League group stages, we could be on the verge of something great

I'd love to go out and attack them, but my inner Tony Pulis is telling me "Steady on son, you've got a two goal lead, defend that" and for those words, Tony, I am grateful

I'm also heeding that advice, with Tony O'Neill out Kevin Morgan will lead the line in a defensive 4-1-4-1, with Mateusz Hewelt retaining his place in goal, Nolan, *****, Feely and Desmond as the back four, David Cawley in defensive midfield, McEneff and Wilson in midfield, Cooper and O'Boyle out wide and Morgan up front.

Let's go.

And the grand defensive plan went wrong almost instantly as Braga took the lead 15 minutes, thanks Tony.

Our disappointment doubled soon after, as did Braga's lead as they scored from a corner, it appears Braga are also channelling their inner Pulis. They're leading on away goals. Sod this, we're attacking

And we did, and we soon found ourselves in their box, with Kevin Morgan (Who;s suffered a thigh strain) on the all, turning his man and finding Joel Cooper! 2-1! Game on

We kept pushing and, just before half-time, we found ourselves in the Braga half with Joel Cooper standing over a free-kick, he did what all good wingers do and whipped a ball in, which was met by the head of goal machine Rory Feely. 2-2!!!!

I told the lads to keep going and we did, but we soon found ourselves behind again when Sandro Veloso converted a sensational Braga move. 3-2.

It was the 77th minute and I looked at my subs bench, one change already made when Liam Kelly replaced the injured Kevin Morgan and I realised, we are 13 minutes from the Europa League group stages, what the f*ck do I do?

Put on a defensive midfielder, that's what. Apparently, so Loughgall academy graduate Kyle Stewart entered the fray in the sweltering Portuguese heat. By the time I'd turned, they'd scored, 4-2, 5-5 on aggregate, Jesus.

And then, the sucker punch came, the 89th minute and Garces whipped the ball in, I knew what was coming as Andrade rose above Eddie Nolan at the back post, he powered it goalwards and... CORSSBAR! But it fell Veloso on the goal line WHAT A CLEARANCE SEAN *****!!!!!

From the resulting corner Scott Wilson conceded a free kick, the ball in dropped to an unmarked Brito! STRAIGHT AT HEWELT! My heart can't take it.

One last desperate pump forward from Braga and - THAT'S IT!!! WE'VE MADE THE GROUP STAGES!!!!!

That's sorted the finances out

Been great following this thread. I started my own unemployed save and decided against Loughall as I could not hope to emulate you. I took the Dundela job (N. Ireland 3rd division) - won league but resigned as not enjoying the club. Keep up the good work.
