Walcott's problem tonight was that he couldn't adjust to having space behind the wing back in which to operate. He was positioning himself far too deep and so being easily taken out of the game by the wingback, while not keeping the wingback pinned back which then had the knock on effect of Brown taking a deeper position and not being able to help keep possession in midfield. You could make a case that Brown should be experienced enough to push Walcott forward himself, which is one of the reasons why I think Brown is inadequate at this level.
The first goal actually came from Walcott finally pushing the wingback far enough back and Brown finally carrying the ball forward far enough to draw one of the midfield players across to cover him. This opened up the space for England's midfield in between the Egyptian defensive line and their midfield line.
Walcott's young and he's not often going to be facing wing backs so he's got time to actually convince himself to follow the team plan rather than reverting to the instincts he's obviously got from playing against a modern 4 man defensive line.
