It depends on which type of player you prefer. If you prefer someone that can score from miles away, scores many free-kicks and has more of a physical presence, you're likely to choose Cristiano Ronaldo. If you like a small technical dribbler that could get through a defence on his own and finish chances brilliantly, be creative and create opportunities for others then you'd pick Messi. I myself prefer Ronaldo, but that's me. These kind of threads are really pointless...
This. Even I prefer Ronaldo,that doesnt mean that he is the best? Tomorrow I might come out saying that Michael Chopra is the best in the world, as someone said earlier, football is all about opinions

Ronaldo is the best player in the world when he wants to be, but when he looses the ball, he never tracks back or attempts to win it back. If he's had a bad first half, chances are he'll have a bad second half too.

Ronaldo is wasted in Spain...he should come back to United 
its so hard, ronaldo at man united i would say was better than messi, messi atm is better
i reckon if ronaldo learnt to become more of a team player, got involved with more players like messi he would score many more
he just has the wrong mentality and thinks he can do it all alone sometime but he cant
they are both outstanding individuals, both better attributes than some
but i'd say overall they are level, at the moment messi
but if ronaldo become a more team player, hard working for his team he would pip ip

Anyway, don't like Messi - but he's the best in the world IMO, ahead of Ronaldo but not by far. They've both been in scintillating form this season and Messi is in a better team but his all round game means he is the better player for me. Ronaldo is better at FKs and heading, but other than that..

Ronaldo is more an athlete. He has a physical prowess that Messi doesnt have. Ronaldo is stronger, taller, and a little quicker. Ronaldo can bag goals from 35 metres out. Messi rarely scores from outside the box. But Messi is considerably more gifted that Ronaldo in the technique part, tough they are both amazing there.
I prefer Ronaldo, for the reasons i just stated, plus Ronaldo was formed at my dear SPORTING!

Messi for me, but it's quite close in just about every area with neither getting a clear lead until....
Teamwork . Ronaldo has NONE of this, he plays only for himself, he never even looks to make a pass or let others into play, it's all about the Ronaldo show. Quite a few of my less blinkered United fans (I support West Brom, neither player has any impact on me that way.) Were actually glad when Ronaldo left hoping that it would mean they would go towards a more team effort for winning games.
Messi on the other hand improves teams by being there, his passing, vision and creativity are just as sublime as his raw technique and dribbling. He does lack some of the physical traits, but uses what he has to the maximum of his ability and does all he can to cover his weaknesses.
Having said all that, I don't think they are the only two 'best players in the world'. Iniesta and Xavi are easily up there too, and although in more specialised positions, Torres, Villa and Drogba are also contenders.
Overall, just amke the most of watching them all play when you can, in there own way both the players we are debating are fantastic to watch, and it's great they are now competing against eachother in the same league.
As a West Brom fan though, none of them are Peter Odemwingie!

Agreed messi is a btter team plyer, but he plays in a better team. Ronaldo is better in the air, is better in dead ball situations, and is physically better.
Messi is a better team playewr, better with the ball at his feet, and more creatvie for teammates etc.
Depends on what the manager needs, in my opinion they are both as good as eachother
they are both amazing players in there own right messi is the best technically gifted player in the world by far where as ronaldo is the best at hitting a ball and giving opposition players a hard time even on a **** day he still makes defenders look silly. Although look what messi did to real a few weeks ago that really should say who is better or then again who is in the better team or even who gives more in team work but in my humble non bias oppinion messi just edges the vote of best player.

For me , Ronaldo just doesn't cut it in the big games , he always seems to go hiding whereas Messi performs at the same standard week in week out. Not just when he can bothered or is against a weak team. I agree with the person who said Ronaldo wouldn't be any good in Barcelona , the only reason Barca are better than Madrid is because even though everybody there knows Messi is the best at the club they do not rely on him. Each one in the eleven has their own job to do and all them will do it as well as they can for the good of the team. You don't see that at Real because each one will either try to do everything on their own or just rely on Ronaldo.

Rather bugs me that most people go on "niceness" to claim Messi is better

Yet I'd vote for Ronaldo as I think he's a more complete player, and you can't discount the fact that he's nearly singlehandedly carried both United and Real, whilst Messi has much better team support. (61 goals in 61 games, can't argue with those numbers can you?)
Then again I'm Portuguese, so I could be biased...
