I'm doing a module called 'Our Friends in the North' as part of my history degree and part of it covers the North/South divide and i just wondered (for those who live in the UK) what your opinion of this is.

Do you think there is a North/South divide and if so where do you think the line begins, separating North from South?

I live in the South East so anything above that is North to me.

The way i see it England,Wales = South Scotland = North

There is alot of bitter Scot's who have a thing about English people they hate...like it's Braveheart all over again. I have no problem with the English...well maybe East London but who doesn't ?

I also think the English Ladies lurrv my accent ;)

I think there is in england. The way you talk about it London is south anywhere above that is north.

Oh i also forgot to ask ..What are your general perceptions of the North and South?

I don't really know that much about why the Scots hate the English so much but i'm going to look into it, it's interesting! :)

haha yea your accent is well sexy Kris! :P

i live in the south east of england, and where as northerners are genuinly quite friendly they are alot more rude and pessimistic than the people in the south.

My dads best friend is a Geordie and he is just ****** moody as, he is funny but in an extremly sarcastic way and i dont think the sun ever shines for him.

My dads wife is from Norwich and urgh christ is she the rudest person going, even when she is trying to ask you niceley is sounds horrible.

I once went further south to devon and the people there were IMMENSLY nice, aha i actually accidentally hit some man in the face with my arm when turning round, and he apologised to me!

I'd say the old North/South divide is generally concerned with Industry v Governance/Services. I'd also say that you should look at the effect of Thatcherite policies in the 1980s in terms of the mass unemployment created by the closing of Northern industries, mining, dockers ect. These industries were not replaced leading to mass unemployment and the current North/South divide which can be based around respective wealth. You should also look at demographics. You'll find an overpopulated South and an underpopulated North....socialist rant over

i live in hampshire/london and for me Northampton is north

Yes there most definitely is, particularly in the National Media,The North East gets a very rough ride.

Case in point,Channel 4s Location Location claiming Middlesbrough was the worst place to live in Britain. Now im first to admit Boro has its area's id rather see blasted into space, but to to make a claim like that was way off the mark.

Nearest I've been to Boro is Whitby JP, that wasn't too bad, however my dad claims 'Boro is a horrible place despite never living there

The North-South Divide (or Rich-Poor Divide) is the socio-economic and political division that exists between the wealthy developed countries, known collectively as "the North", and the poorer developing countries (least developed countries), or "the South.

Doesn't say about england though :S

Ive been to London and Glasgow and im in no rush to go back to either.

I wouldn't fancy Glasgow, every place has their rough parts, there a lot of places in London i don't go and i don't plan to either

I knew it (H)

Well I lived in Nottingham, normally around where people say the 'border' is. If you asked the people there if they were northern or southern, they would mostly say neither- so there isn't really a clear border.

I live near Cambridge so I think of anything above East Anglia as North.

Well I live in Bournemouth so anywhere is North to me; But technically I would say that Birmingham upwards is North

I agree, I think Birmingham and upwards is the North. I was a bit sceptical of Newcastle before I went there, however everyone was really friendly and it is a lovely city!
