DECEMBER UPDATE
Millwall head toward the end of the year in great form, they have surprised most neutrals by climbing to the top of League One playing some attractive attacking football. Milton Keynes Dons on the otherhand have had a season to forget so far, but could they overturn the odds at the New Den?
The two sides spent much of the match cancelling each other out and, despite their differing fortunes in the League before today, there was little to seperate them. Millwall were the first to strike when winger David Martin made a mazy run, dribbling from just inside the MK Dons half before releasing Steve Morison with a perfectly timed pass. Despite being closed down by two defenders Morison showed great composure to finish neatly past the Don's Polish 'keeper Boguslaw Wyparlo.
The MK Don's equalised in the 39th minute and looked good value for their goal too, fullback Marc Bernaus played in a terrific cross from deep and Millwall's Tony Craig faile dto pick up the run of Stephen Gleeson leaving him with an easy tap in.
The game looked set to end in a draw until Paul Robinson rose high above the Don's defence to power a header home from David Martin's corner.
Boxing's world heavy weight champion and Millwall fan David Haye was watching from the stands today as his team outpunched Hartlepool United. David Martin scored Millwall's first goal on 23 minutes, pouncing on a mistake by defender Neil Austin. Austin tried to pass the ball back to his goalkeeper but his effort was weak and pacey winger Martin got there before Scott Flinders, giving the keeper no chance to stop his shot. In the 34th minute loanee Zavon Hines added a second Millwall goal as he turned Pools centreback Ben Clark inside out before scoring with a fine finish off the post.
Hines proved to be a handful all afternoon and the Hartlepool defence could not cope with his pace and skill. Hines' second, and Millwall's third, goal came in the 51st minute as he ran unchecked onto an Adam Bolder through ball, thumping the ball past the 'keeper and into the net. After 66 minutes Pools midfielder Ritchie Humphries saw red for a leg breaking tackle on Adam Bolder, truth be told it had little effect on the game as Millwall were already playing at a canter by this time.
Millwall secured another win today, their seventh consecutive win in the league, with a fine display of attacking football against Brentford. Midfielder Liam Trotter, on loan from Ipswich town, opened the scoring after just seven minutes as he played a neat one-two with Anton Jongsma and rifled a shot Wyciech Szczensy in the Brentford goal. Millwall's led lasted just three minutes, however, as Bee's favourite Charlie McDonald scored with a sublime strike from 25 yards out. The Lions retook the lead in the 21st minute when Steve Morison's accurate long ball forward found Neil Harris powering beyond the Brentford back line. No keeper could have stopped Harris' bullet strike, his eleventh goal of the season. There were to be no more goals in the match but this wasn't due to a lack of effort on the part of the Millwall players, who pressured the Brentford goal until the final whistle.
Since losing to Southampton on the opening day of the season Millwall have not looked back, unbeaten in 20 games and top of the Coca-Cola League One few would have bet against them picking up all three points against Walsall today.
True to form it was Millwall who opened the scoring, Steve Morison heading home from David Martin's corner in the 41st minute. Walsall's ex-Lions striker Darren Byfield was a constant threat to the Millwall goal and in the 86th minute he got the goal he richly deserved, running in to get his head on the end of Julian Gray's cross.
Following David Martin's red card in the 6th minute Millwall had their backs to the wall for much of the game. Although they rode their luck at times, Charlton hit the woodwork twice, the Millwall players gave a battling display their manager will have been proud of.
Meanwhile, Leeds beat Southampton 2-0 at Elland Road to cut Millwall's lead at the top of League One to a single point.
Millwall's run of 21 league games without loss ended today at Carrow Road to a determined and powerful Norwich side, and with defeat they relinquished top spot to Leeds United.
Grant Holt got the Canaries off to a flyer, beating Millwall's offside trap and scoring past the stranded David Forde after just nine minutes. The Norwich players worked hard to ensure that Millwall couldn't get into their stride and this frustrated teh visitors. When Tony Craig brought down Holt in the area with a tackle from behind the Millwall players could only argue amongst themselves, with Craig and Darren Ward having to be kept apart by team mates. Wes Hoolahan stepped up to convert the spot kick and give Norwich a 2-0 lead. The scoreline became 3-0 in the 83rd minute when the home side were awarded another penalty, this time Ritchie De Laet was adjudged to have been climbed on George Mourad whilst trying to clear a high ball. Mourad dusted himself off to score the resulting penalty and put the game beyond doubt.
Leeds 0-0 draw with Hartlepool was enough to place them first in League One ahead of the Lions on goal difference.
It didn't take Millwall long to regain top spot in League One as they got back to winning ways against a lacklustre Bristol Rovers team. Millwall started the game cautiously but they confidence soon returned when Adam Bolder headed home Nadjim Abdou's corner in the 37th minute. Chris Hackett added a second Millwall goal on 52 minutes as he rounded the goalkeeper after Abdou had played him in with a clever pass that wrong footed the Rovers defence.
With Leeds going down 3-2 away to Stockport the win sent Millwall back into first place, ahead of their rivals in second by three points and Huddersfield in third by ten.
