SEPTEMBER UPDATE
Millwall boss Dan Lake was named Coca-Cola Championship Manager of the Month for August 2010. After such a great start to the new season would the curse of the Manager of the Month strike the Lions?
Millwall boss Dan Lake was named Coca-Cola Championship Manager of the Month for August 2010. After such a great start to the new season would the curse of the Manager of the Month strike the Lions?
Millwall suffered their first league defeat of the season away at Preston North End and gave up top spot in the Championship. The Lions enjoyed greater possession but couldn't find a way past Preston 'keeper Wayne Henderson. North End made Millwall pay for their profligacy when they scored an injury time winner, midfielder Paul Coutts beating Vito Mannone from distance in the 93rd minute. Leigh Griffiths almost grabbed a dramatic equaliser with the final kick of the game but Henderson made an instinctive save from point blank range.
Millwall returned to winning ways against Leicester City at the New Den. The Foxes were completely overwhelmed today and finished the game without registering a shot on target. Nadjim Abdou scored Millwall's first goal in the 36th minute, his late run into the box fooled the Leicester defence and he thumped the ball past Darryl Flahavan. It was 2-0 when Steve Morison got ahead of Jack Hobbs and scored from close range, and 3-0 after 76 minutes as David Martin finished a fine passing move.
A close match that ended in a second consecutive away defeat for Millwall. Darren Ward and Ritchie De Laet were slow to react in the 26th minute when David Cotterill received the ball in the box and placed his shot into the bottom left-hand corner. When Defender Darren Ward equalised from David Martin's corner on 77 minutes a draw seemed like a fair result but the parity lasted only a minute. Straight from the kickoff Joe Allen received the ball on the right wing and ran it to the touchline before firing in a cross. Shaun McDonald was first to the cross and his powerful header beat Vito Mannone to win the game for the Swans.
Since returning from injury Leigh Griffiths has struggled to recapture his early season form, but today he put in a virtuoso performance and finished the game with two goals. The first goal of the match came in the 17th minute and it was route one stuff, 'keeper Vito Mannone took a Millwall freekick deep in his own half and his long ball found Griffiths in line with the last defender. Griffiths' first touch controlled the ball and his second slammed it past the Cardiff goalkeeper. Griffiths then scored a penalty on 29 minutes and Steve Morison added a third goal five minutes later. From David Martin's corner Darren Ward's header hit the bar, Ritchie De Laet picked up the rebound but his shot was brilliantly saved by David Marshall and it was Morison who finally bundled the ball over the line.
The last time these two teams met it was under the Wembley arch in the League One play-off final of 2009. On that day Scunthorpe were 3-2 winners and it was they who were promoted to the Championship.
Today's game at Glanford Park was a far more open affair than the scoreline would suggest, with the two teams managing 29 shots on goal between them. Millwall claimed a 1-0 win with Steve Morison's 6th minute goal, the forward was left unmarked and his strike from the edge of the area beat Joe Murphy's despairing dive.
The win was enough to return Millwall to the top of the table as rival's Bristol City drew 1-1 with Barnsley.
When asked whether he believed his team could maintain their incredible early season form, Millwall manager Dan Lake had this to say "It's like the film Men in Black. I walk around in a black suit, white shirt and black tie where I've had to flash my white light every now and again to erase some memories, but I feel we've got hold of the galaxy now. It's in our hands."Today's game at Glanford Park was a far more open affair than the scoreline would suggest, with the two teams managing 29 shots on goal between them.
