SEPTEMBER UPDATE

Millwall boss Dan Lake was named Coca-Cola Championship Manager of the Month for August 2010. After such a great start to the new season would the curse of the Manager of the Month strike the Lions?

Millwall suffered their first league defeat of the season away at Preston North End and gave up top spot in the Championship. The Lions enjoyed greater possession but couldn't find a way past Preston 'keeper Wayne Henderson. North End made Millwall pay for their profligacy when they scored an injury time winner, midfielder Paul Coutts beating Vito Mannone from distance in the 93rd minute. Leigh Griffiths almost grabbed a dramatic equaliser with the final kick of the game but Henderson made an instinctive save from point blank range.

Millwall returned to winning ways against Leicester City at the New Den. The Foxes were completely overwhelmed today and finished the game without registering a shot on target. Nadjim Abdou scored Millwall's first goal in the 36th minute, his late run into the box fooled the Leicester defence and he thumped the ball past Darryl Flahavan. It was 2-0 when Steve Morison got ahead of Jack Hobbs and scored from close range, and 3-0 after 76 minutes as David Martin finished a fine passing move.

A close match that ended in a second consecutive away defeat for Millwall. Darren Ward and Ritchie De Laet were slow to react in the 26th minute when David Cotterill received the ball in the box and placed his shot into the bottom left-hand corner. When Defender Darren Ward equalised from David Martin's corner on 77 minutes a draw seemed like a fair result but the parity lasted only a minute. Straight from the kickoff Joe Allen received the ball on the right wing and ran it to the touchline before firing in a cross. Shaun McDonald was first to the cross and his powerful header beat Vito Mannone to win the game for the Swans.

Since returning from injury Leigh Griffiths has struggled to recapture his early season form, but today he put in a virtuoso performance and finished the game with two goals. The first goal of the match came in the 17th minute and it was route one stuff, 'keeper Vito Mannone took a Millwall freekick deep in his own half and his long ball found Griffiths in line with the last defender. Griffiths' first touch controlled the ball and his second slammed it past the Cardiff goalkeeper. Griffiths then scored a penalty on 29 minutes and Steve Morison added a third goal five minutes later. From David Martin's corner Darren Ward's header hit the bar, Ritchie De Laet picked up the rebound but his shot was brilliantly saved by David Marshall and it was Morison who finally bundled the ball over the line.

The last time these two teams met it was under the Wembley arch in the League One play-off final of 2009. On that day Scunthorpe were 3-2 winners and it was they who were promoted to the Championship.
Today's game at Glanford Park was a far more open affair than the scoreline would suggest, with the two teams managing 29 shots on goal between them. Millwall claimed a 1-0 win with Steve Morison's 6th minute goal, the forward was left unmarked and his strike from the edge of the area beat Joe Murphy's despairing dive.
The win was enough to return Millwall to the top of the table as rival's Bristol City drew 1-1 with Barnsley.
When asked whether he believed his team could maintain their incredible early season form, Millwall manager Dan Lake had this to say "It's like the film Men in Black. I walk around in a black suit, white shirt and black tie where I've had to flash my white light every now and again to erase some memories, but I feel we've got hold of the galaxy now. It's in our hands."

OCTOBER UPDATE

Millwall v Nottingham Forest

Steve Morison and Leigh Griffiths are proving to be the scourge of Championship defenders this season with six goals each, but today it was their movement off the ball that created space and allowed livewire winger David Martin to get himself on the scoresheet.
Martin’s opener came in the 24th minute, the Forest ‘keeper punched clear a Griffiths freekick but Darren Ward headed the ball back into the area and Martin caught Forest napping to score from three yards out.
Millwall dominated large passages of play but didn’t increase their lead until the 79th minute, Griffiths’ reverse pass found Martin bursting into the Forest area and he coolly slotted the ball past a helpless Lee Camp.

Fulham v Millwall

Both sides played open, attacking and free flowing football in this London derby but found goals hard to come by. David Martin’s third goal in two games clinched the win for Dan Lake’s Millwall. Following a long pass forward by Ritchie De Laet, Fulham’s Stephen Kelly hesitated just long enough for Martin to steal the ball and a yard on him before tucking home the winning goal.

Watford v Millwall

On 26 minutes Steve Morison struck at the near post to head Chris Hackett’s corner firmly into the net. After the opening goal neither team could stamp their authority onto the match and a Millwall win was favourite, that was until their defence failed to deal with either Stephen McGinn’s through-ball or with Will Hoskins well timed run. Lions ‘keeper David Forde was left clutching at thin air as Hoskins rounded him and thumped the ball into an empty net, at the end of the day a draw was probably the fairest result.

Millwall v Burnley

Recently relegated Burnley gave early season leaders Millwall a torrid time at the New Den today. Some wayward finishing and Lion’s goalkeeper Vito Mannone kept the score at 0-0 until Neil Harris’ pass split the Burnley defence in two and Leigh Griffiths scored against the run of play.
Burnley got the goal, but not the win, that their football deserved as Martin Paterson bundled home Richard Eckersley’s cross on 78 minutes to make it 1-1.

Bristol City v Millwall

Millwall came from behind today to keep the Robin’s at bay and hang onto top spot in the Championship. Steve Morison’s goal ten minutes from time earnt Millwall their third consecutive 1-1 draw after Danny Haynes had given Bristol City the lead with a crisp finish on 20 minutes. Once again Millwall could consider themselves extremely lucky as they were consistently outplayed by their opponents. Talking to the press after the game Lions manager Dan Lake was asked if his side had been lucky today, he replied "I don't believe in luck... but I do believe you need it."

NOVEMBER UPDATE

Millwall v Leeds United

These two, newly promoted teams fought hard in this frantic game of end to end football but it was Millwall who came out on top. So far this season Steve Morison has forged a formidable partnership with new signing Leigh Griffiths, and it came as no surprise that Morison added to his goal tally after playing a neat one-two with Griffiths before letting fly from fully 30 yards out.

Coventry v Millwall

Leigh Griffiths and Steve Morison were on target again for high flying Millwall against a Coventry City side struggling at the bottom of the Championship. Griffiths was first to score as he lifted a dead ball strike over the Coventry wall and into the top corner of the goal. Goal scorer then became goal provider as he played Morison in behind the last defender to score Millwall’s second.

Sheffield Wednesday v Millwall

This game will not live long in the memories of either set of fans. Wednesday saw more of the ball but weren’t able to turn possession into goals, whilst Millwall snatched an unlikely win as they struggled throughout the game. Steve Morison put Millwall ahead on 26 minutes and Lee O’Connor equalised for Wednesday two minutes into the second half. Millwall’s winner came in the 75th minute, Steve Morison’s shot from the edge of the area was going wide until substitute Luke Boden turned the ball into his own net. After the match Lions boss Dan Lake had this to say "to put it in gentleman's terms if you've been out for a night and you're looking for a young lady and you pull one, some weeks they're good looking and some weeks they're not the best. Our performance today would have been not the best looking bird but at least we got her in the taxi. She wasn't the best looking lady we ended up taking home but she was very pleasant and very nice, so thanks very much, let's have a coffee"

Millwall v Blackpool

Millwall played some great football today and were rewarded when striker Lee Griffiths gave them the lead with a cracking drive from 18 yards. But Blackpool refused to go the way of so many teams that have visited the New Den this season and fought long and hard. It paid off when they were awarded a penalty deep in injury time, Lions defender Shane Lowry hacked down Hameur Bouazza clumsily and the Algerian striker dusted himself off to score from the spot.

Millwall v Reading

Millwall’s first defeat at home this season came at the hands of a well organised Reading side who lifted themselves to within two points of the Lions.
On 17 minutes David Forde, the Millwall goalkeeper, failed to deal with a Shane Long cross and Simon Church was presented with the easiest of tap ins to give Reading the lead. Just three minutes later Jobi McAnuff played a long ball forward and Shane Long sprung the Millwall offside trap before drilling the ball past Forde.
Millwall’s task was made so much harder when Tony Craig got his marching orders for a foul on McAnuff. Steve Morison did pull a goal back for the Lions on 72 minutes but ultimately it wasn’t enough.
