Nigel Clough has quit his managers position at Sheffield United. Sky sources understand there were growing tensions between Clough and the board due to finances available. It is understood Clough was left dismayed at the boards lack of backing during the summer and in particular their failure to tie down last season's loanees John Brayford and Connor Coady. Clough took over at Sheffield United in October 2013 with the South Yorkshire club in the bottom 4 of league one after a disastrous spell under David Weir. Clough guided the Blades to 7th place in league one, missing out on the play offs by 7 points, as well as reaching the FA cup semi final where their dream eventually ended at the hands of Hull. Utd's FA cup run was the highlight of Clough's brief reign with wins over premier league sides Aston Villa and Fulham as well as Charlton and local rivals Nottingham Forest before losing 5-3 to Hull at Wembley in the semi final.
Clough was unavailable for comment.
