English Premier League - Game 27 - Tottenham Hotspur (Away)
If we can win against the Spurs today then I will believe that we really can push for top 4. Having lost 3 on the bounce though, it’s not going to be easy, particularly at White Hart Lane. Cazares gets his first Premier League start in the absence of Mane, whilst Rodriguez returns to lead the line. This is a crunch period of fixtures, with Chelsea in 3 days time, and a further 3 league matches within the next 10 days.
Only a crucial block from Fonte in the first 15 seconds prevented Eriksen from likely opening the scoring from inside the box.
In the 14th minute a woeful mistake from Alderweireld allowed Rodriguez to break his drought and open the scoring. Cazares attempted to play him in with a through ball, and Alderweireld was first to it, but his pass back to Lloris was too soft, and Rodriguez pounced to slot past the helpless keeper.
In the 20th minute Bentaleb played a perfect slide rule pass for Eriksen, but the Dane inexplicably missed the target when he really should have scored.
A sensational backheel from Kane in the 25th minute had Eriksen splitting the defence again, but he took the ball too far and Fonte got back to block his effort from 6 yards.
In the 28th minute Cazares gave the ball away outside the Spurs box but they gave it straight back to Wanyama, who slipped a ball through for Cazares. Unfortunately, his shot looped over the bar.
In the 50th minute Cazares played a fantastic pass through the defence for Rodriguez, who took a touch and fired inches wide of the near post. He probably should have done better.
In the 56th minute an Eriksen free kick found Kane at the back post, who was denied not once but twice by the desperate Stekelenburg. Unfortunately, the ball was still loose, and the striker was able to have a third bite at the cherry, and tapped into the open net.
In the 67th minute Ward-Prowse replaced Cazares and moved to the right wing.
Unbelievably, a minute later, Rodriguez had his second - also from a terrible Spurs error! Targett’s throw in was headed backwards by Eriksen, but not hard enough, and Rodriguez surged past the defence, took a touch around Lloris and slid the ball home!
Two minutes later an outrageous backheel from Rodriguez sent Ramirez through one on one, but his shot was ballooned high and wide when he absolutely should have scored.
Davies hit the post for Spurs after a cleared corner was worked back in in the 73rd minute. Stekelenburg must have touched it onto the post, as another corner was given.
Palombo replaced Ramirez before the corner was taken, as we dropped into a 4-3-3 formation.
In the 80th minute a long cross from Walker somehow found Kane in the box for an easy volley to tie the game.
Wanyama was replaced by Davis immediately following the play, as the substitution had been pending.
In the 86th minute the unthinkable happened. Rodriguez’s harmless cross was trickling to Lloris, who stooped to pick it up - and dropped it! Quick as a flash, Ward-Prowse darted in and smashed it into the net!
In stoppage time Pato almost gave me a heart attack as his 40 yard effort from a cleared corner whistled narrowly wide of the top right corner.
If I hadn’t known better I would have said that Spurs were match-fixing, as we scored not one, not two, but three goals from their errors. I’ll gladly take the points though! We beat them 3-2 with a late winner earlier in the season, and have done it again! The match could have gone either way, with a similar amount of chances for each team - 7 clear cut and 4 half chances for Spurs, 6 and 3 respectively for ourselves. Rodriguez broke his drought with a brace, and technically assisting the winning goal too. It doesn’t matter how you get them…
