Injury News...

Captain Joakim Nilsson is ruled out of our crunch match with Bosnia just days out. Bergström is called into the squad as his replacement.

An absolute hammer blow. Fontaine suffers a crippling injury on international duty, which will rule him out for the rest of the season, and undoubtedly cause some serious long term damage. Poor bloke. It remains to be seen whether he will retain his blistering speed. Such a cruel injury to such a bright talent. He’s currently our top goalscorer with 6, and our most creative player with 5 assists, in 9(2) appearances, all in his first season for a champion club, playing in an unfamiliar position. Somebody is going to have to step up.

Manchester United are no longer Glazer-owned.

We tore Bosnia to shreds, bouncing back from our poor performance against Belgium in style, as our front 4 all netted in the opening 25 minutes, with the returning Quaison picking up his second before the half hour mark as Augustinsson provided his third assist!

Augustinsson had his fourth assist before 40 minutes were up as he gifted Haksabanovic his second as well!

Persson, Lewicki and Sachpekidis saw some game time for the last 15.

That was an absolute massacre! 6 goals between our starting front four, an incredible 4 assists for Augustinsson, and one each for Wahlqvist and Hiljemark!

Unfortunately, the result wasn’t enough to qualify ahead of the Belgians, but we still performed remarkably well, losing out to them only on head to head record - if we’d had a bit more luck and a bit less Courtois in our home match, we would have won it. In better news, Andersson's strike saw him break the record for goals in a calendar year for Sweden - obviously only since the start of the save, prime Zlatan would have smashed it! :P

Meanwhile, Rodriguez nets his first International goal for Spain.

Shrek steps into management.

How many goals do your inside fowards score a season roughly ??

They alternate a bit between inside forwards and wingers, but Asensio had something like 20-25 at probably a 1 in 2 ratio. The other AML and AMR players probably averaged a bit less. I think Jacobsen hit ten, not too sure about the rest, sorry :/ Asensio also probably scored a couple of penalties, though he missed some too!

English Premier League - Game 12 - Sheffield Wednesday (Away)

Asensio comes back into the side after recovering from his latest injury. Fontaine is sidelined for the rest of the season so it’s good timing for our best winger to return, even if he’s still unhappy. Doebel shifts to the left flank. Jurcik is in for Süle, who is tired from international duty. Overachieving Sheffield Wednesday have a deadly strike force, who we will have to keep quiet today.

A missed header from Jurcik off a 3rd minute long ball saw Kuhl through on goal, but the defender recovered in time to block the shot and concede a corner, and prevent Dragowski having to do anything.

30 seconds later Dragowski made a low save after the cleared corner was crossed back in to Berahino.

In the 14th minute Asensio squared for Vietto just 6 or 7 yards out, but he couldn’t beat the keeper!

Fortunately he put to rest my concerns about his form in the 23rd minute, moving nicely onto a lovely Gitschier through ball, and slotting it into the bottom corner to open the scoring!

Just a minute later and Doebel absolutely scorched the defence, twisting and flashing past two defenders, before whipping a cross through the 6 yard box which Asensio volleyed into the roof of the net from a sharp angle! A goal on his injury return!

Sels produced a vital diving save to stop Vietto sealing the match for us in the 26th minute with a first time pop from the edge of the box.

The keeper once again came up big for Sheffield in the 32nd minute with an outstretched foot denying Doebel from close range.

In the 36th minute it really should have been three, as a scintillating counter attack featuring Doebel and Vietto culminated in Asensio teeing up Gitschier, but the German ballooned his effort over the bar.

A sensational ball from Wellington in the 38th minute split the defence for Vietto, but the Argentine’s shot flew wide with just Sels to beat.

In the 49th minute Vietto surged through the defence from Gitschier’s ball, but Sels made a diving stop and held the ball.

Finally, in the 62nd minute we had that elusive third goal, as Gitschier one-touched Wellington’s pass into the path of Vietto, who flashed his shot across Sels and into the far corner.

Wellington had a crack from range in the 69th minute and only the fingertips of the diving Sels denied him what would have been an absolute screamer.

We made a triple change in the 73rd minute, with Doebel, Chambers and Wellington departing, to be replaced by Jacobsen, Nishimura and Prins respectively.

Sels was still playing out of his skin though, and denied Vietto a hat trick from a point blank volley off Nishimura’s 85th minute cross.

Less than a minute later Wilson put a close range half-volley in off the post to deny us a clean sheet. Great ball from Lallana but quite frustrating.

We created almost a constant stream of chances today but their keeper did a fantastic job to keep them in it. Asensio was sensational upon his return and continues to demonstrate what a key player he is for the team. Gitschier was his world-class self, and the usual suspects of Dimarco and Vietto joined them near the top of the match ratings, with Wellington continuing his excellent form and getting amongst it as well. The young Brazilian has been a revelation in Ward-Prowse’s absence, and the captain will have a real fight on his hands to reclaim his place once he recovers from his injury. We’re now above Chelsea by a point, and their game in hand is at the Etihad so there’s no guarantee they’ll reclaim top spot later today. At the other end of the table, poor Norwich still haven’t recovered from the hiding we gave them back on matchday 3 when we rediscovered our form after a slow start.

UEFA Champions League - Game 5 - Dynamo Kyyiv (Away)

Well Chelsea won their match against Man City in the league to return to the top of the table, but they face an uphill battle to qualify from their CL group ahead of Porto and Celtic, requiring a win against the Portuguese and a favour from Molde FK. Our rotated side takes the field in Ukraine needing a win to keep us in the driver’s seat for top spot in the group.

In just the second minute we hit the lead, as we were afforded an extraordinary amount of space in the box, and Prins squared for Jacobsen who gave the keeper no chance from 8 yards.

In the 8th minute Miguel fed Jacobsen down the left, and the winger was tripped in the box. Candreva dispatched the penalty with ease.

Jacobsen was running riot and he nicked the ball in the 23rd minute, feeding it through to Sindelar, but the striker couldn’t beat Koval.

Burtic made a strong save at his near post after a corner had pinballed around our box in the 34th minute.

In the 45th minute Candreva sent a sublime angled ball through the box for Sindelar at the far post. His shot was somehow kept out by Koval, but he tucked away the second chance.

Perea hit the outside of the post from a sharp angle after a Miguel throw had been intercepted in the 49th minute, and a long high cross was put into the box for him.

In the 54th minute Nishimura sent a cracking strike into the top corner after his attempted pass rebounded straight back to him. It was with his left foot too!

In the 58th minute Dynamo deservedly pulled a goal back through Moraes after a superbly worked counter attack.

Amrani and Smith replaced Wellington and Miguel in the 70th minute. Prins dropped into central midfield.

Persson replaced Sindelar in the 74th.

Lovell netted our 5th in the 78th minute with a simple half-volley from Candreva’s free kick.

Persson netted from Prins’ through ball two minutes later but the flag was up.

A diving Koval denied Jacobsen his second from a Candreva delivery in the 87th minute.

In stoppage time the Norwegian bested him though, tucking the ball into the far corner coolly after Smith had passed him the ball.

I was expecting a far closer game than this, what with our rotated lineup and their home ground - where, it must be said, they held Madrid to a draw. But my second string came through without breaking a sweat. A superb performance - my personal standouts were Nishimura and Jacobsen, but it’s really tough to pick after that kind of decimation. It does nothing to change the group equation for us though - a draw will see us claim top spot, a loss would see us relinquish it.

Nice injuries!

Just kidding about hitting the like on a post with injuries :P Hope it doesn't put too much of a damper in his progress.

Hahaha it's appreciated even if it's an injury post :P I'm really disappointed for him, he's been doing so well but if it harms him significantly then he may end up having to be sold :( 8 months is a seriously long time

English Premier League - Game 13 - Newcastle United (Home)

Newcastle come into this match in fine form, sitting pretty in 5th place. However, the table is very congested, so if we perform to our usual standard then they could take a bit of a tumble. Whilst Chelsea beat City last week, they could only draw with QPR today, so we have the extra motivation of leapfrogging the Blues on goal difference if we win today.

In the 4th minute Newcastle demonstrated real commitment, as first Martin then Fischer produced goal line blocks to prevent first Laporte and then Süle from opening the scoring from an Asensio corner.

In the 14th minute Asensio fired us in front with a sublime finish from a ridiculous angle after a one-two between Gitschier and Dimarco down the left. Asensio made a fool of Haïdara, nutmegging him at the byline, before picking the minute gap between Asenjo and his near post!

Three minutes later we were two in front, as Chambers curled a fairly low cross behind the defensive line, and the fastest player on the pitch, Doebel slid home a cool finish from a tight angle at the back post.

Dimarco’s cross just two minutes later was headed off the crossbar by Vietto.

Sindelar replaced Vietto in the 64th minute.

Within a minute of taking the field, the striker was released by Asensio, but was denied by Asenjo from a fairly tight angle.

Wellington, outstanding as ever, was replaced by Prins in the 68th minute.

Miguel was on for Dimarco in the 72nd.

Wellington, Doebel and the two fullbacks were the top performers in a routine win that sees us claim top spot in the league by virtue of goal difference. Newcastle fought well but never really threatened. Now for our crunch match with Madrid.

Nice win over Newcastle and did you get enough end of the month awards. Never seen a treble for normal and youth awards

Thanks, yeah I can't remember whether it's happened before for both at the same time. Pretty impressive month from a few different players!

UEFA Champions League Group Stage - Game 6 - Real Madrid (Home)

Jurcik and Nishimura are the only changes to the side that breezed past Newcastle three days ago, as we welcome Real Madrid to St Mary’s for our final group stage game. A draw or win sees us top the group, a defeat sees the Spaniards claim the seeding for the next round. An expensively assembled Madrid side lines up against my young team.

In the 8th minute Dimarco surged down the left and swung in an inch-perfect cross for Vietto, who volleyed straight into Navas! Gitschier followed up with a volley off the rebound, but it struck the outstretched leg of Ramos, and Isco cleared.

In the 21st minute we had our opener! Asensio’s corner was cleared to Dimarco, who returned it to the Spaniard. He put in another cross and Sven Doebel glanced a header across Navas and into the bottom corner!

3 minutes later Doebel picked out Vietto with a great pass, but his first time shot was too close to Navas, who collapsed onto it and held the ball.

Less than a minute into the second half Asensio swung in a free kick, and Laporte powered an unstoppable header past Navas to double our lead!

Isco, Kroos and Ronaldo had all been seen off by 55 minutes, replaced after ineffective performances.

Sindelar replaced Vietto in the 65th minute.

In the 74th minute Brozovic picked out Benzema with a sensational pass, and the Frenchman finished. Generous goalkeeping from Dragowski, who really should have done better.

Wanyama and Chambers replaced Gasperoni and Nishimura in the 75th minute.

Too easy! I never felt in any danger of losing today as we saw off the Galacticos with relative comfort. The match stats demonstrate this, as Madrid had just one shot on target all game, and had more than 4 times as many fouls as shots! First place and undefeated in the group stage. I’ll take it! Asensio was outstanding yet again - just imagine how good he’d be with morale higher than Very Poor! The biggest surprise of the group stage was P$G finishing bottom of their group with just 4 points, behind Benfica, Feyenoord and Roma - in that order!
