Napoli Capture Thiago and Ramires

tumblr_lbw9f2MByC1qdixxlo1_500.jpg

Napoli today confirmed a magnificent double transfer swoop. The club unveiled Thiago Alcantara, formerly of Barcelona, who has signed a four-year deal with the club. Also joining him at the San Paolo is Brazilian midfielder Ramires, who has joined on a season long loan from Chelsea.

Italian-born Spanish midfielder Thiago was sensationally released by Pep Guardiola at the end of the season, after a splendid season with the Barca 'B' team. Stuart Watson moved quickly to recruit the player, which could prove to be a major coup.

Brazilian international RamiresWho signed for Chelsea in a 13m deal last year, was quickly frozen out by David Moyes, who took over from Ancelotti in May, after the club finished 6th in the Premier League. Napoli have the option to buy the player if they wish, in another stunning move.

Wicked signings mate...

Transfers & Pre-Season
Second Season Looms

Jose-Catala.jpg

As the fans look forward to a second season under Stuart Watson, they saw several players come and go.

Here are the Transfers -

Carlos Guardado - unattached

The young Spanish goalkeeper had spent 4 weeks on trial in the youth system, and Watson had clearly seen enough to sign the player.

Davide Petrucci - free from Manchester United

A clever signing of which the Partenopi will surely benefit from in the future. Can play in the hole, or as a striker, Alex Ferguson was disappointed to lose such a prospect.

Oscar Trejo - 700k from Mallorca

A signing that came as a surprise to many fans, although his 17 goal haul last season at Rayo showed he has a natural eye for the goal. Another possibly shrewd capture.

Dennis Aogo - 2.1m from HSV

German full-back spent last season on loan with Napoli, and looked very capable. The player returned to Germany to be told he could leave, but Watson acted quickly to acquire him.

Marco Verratti - 1m from Pescara

One of Italian football's gems, Napoli beat AC Milan, Juve and Lazio to the signature of the midfielder. One to watch.

Pichu Atienze - unattached

Watson raided the free market again, this time bringing young Spain defender Pichu to the club. Looks capable, and has since been moved to Modena on loan.

Emmanuel Testardi - 400k from Sampdoria

A lot of fans are skeptical with the capture of a rival's player. However, this could be a astute deal, an impressive Target man, who scored 24 in 32 for Gubbio on loan last term.

Nikola Saric - unattached

The Croatian striker decided to leave Liverpool after being left in limbo for much of last season. Napoli seem to be picking up the footballers of tomorrow, and this young man is certainly that.

Cheick Tiote - 110k loan from Newcastle

Yet again, Watson raided his boyhood club to sign the midfielder, initially on a loan deal. After the Toon were relegated, Watson lost out on Carroll and Ranger, but struck it lucky third time round.

Ivan Marcano - 4m from Villarreal

One of Spain's top up and coming defenders, Watson took his time but eventually landed the player, who was integral to Getafe during his loan last season.

Marco Amelia - unattached

Brought in as backup to the aging De Sanctis, Amelia is Italy's number two, and could certainly push Morgan for the no1 jersey.

Vincent Kompany - 4.2m from Manchester City

Another clever signing for Watson, who brought him in as a versatile player who can truly benefit the squad.

Now, let's look at the pre-season games -

Eighteen goals, which was pleasing, although two defeats and a draw was not great. However, plenty of players to take a look at regarding their squad status, some impressed, some failed to.

MATCHES

SupperCoppa Italiana
Inter 3-1 Napoli - Bassong(52)
610x.jpg

Napoli's completive season started badly, as they fell to a strong inter side. With seven players under the age of 21 in the starting XI, Watson was clearly not too interested in winning this game. Napoli held out for the first half, and took the lead as Bassong headed home from a Zeman corner. Two minutes later Sneijder struck to level the score. Eto'o broke through six minutes later, finishing well to give Inter the lead. 71 minutes saw Inter wrap up the game, as Eto'o latched onto a Marveux flick-on to make it 3-1.
MoM - S. Bassong - A very good headed goal, and stopped Pandev throughout the game.

Napoli 2-1 AC Milan - Cavani(45, 69)
l-esultanza-di-edinson-cavani-napoli_16167188_400x300.jpg

napoli put the disappointment of the finals behind them to take a very good win in the opening game of Serie A. It started poorly, with Santacroce deflecting an Ibrahimovic strike into the net after 2 minutes. On the stroke of half-time, Cavani rose above Thiago Silva to head home. On sixty-nine minutes, Cavani showed incredible pace to beat Antonini to the ball, before cutting inside, and swiping the ball beyond the flailing Oukidja.
MoM - E. Cavani - Scored two important goals to give Napoli a good start.

UEFA Super Cup
Napoli 1-4 Real Madrid - Veron(87)

Another final defeat for Napoli, as they were humbled by a magnificent Real Madrid side. Again, Napoli held it together well for the first-half, but superstar Cristiano Ronaldo struck twice in ten minutes to send Real ahead. Higuain scored soon after, giving Real an unassailable lead. The game was wrapped up by Angel Di Maria, cutting inside and striking beyond De Sanctis. Young Carlos veron took it past Carvalho and Pepe to score a cracking consolation.
MoM - W. Gargano - Solid and accomplished throughout, and held Granero at bay.

Brescia 3-3 Napoli - Hamsik(23), Cavani(58), Quagliarella(83)
Fabio-Quagliarella.jpg

Caracciolo equalized for the hosts, heading home 9 minutes later. Possanzini found himself one-on-one and finished easily. Cavani continued his scoring run, looping a header up and over Sereni after an hour. Quagliarella looked to have stolen the points for Napoli, finishing astutely after 83 minutes, but Diamanti struck from range to grab a late equalizer.
MoM - F. Quagilarella - First game back at Napoli, and looked lethal.

Napoli 3-2 Udinese - Ramires(2), Hamsik(8), Quagilarella(82)
RamiresBrazil.jpg

Another superb match saw Napoli sneak out with another three points. It all started perfectly, with Ramires finishing a fantastic attacking move after two minutes.. Hamsik then struck from just inside the area to give the hosts a two goal lead 6 minutes later. Half time seemed to turn Udinese around, with Di Natale struck on fifty minutes, heading home a fine Sanchez cross. Quagliarella struck on 80 minutes to send the game beyond doubt, but a late Di Natale goal made for a nervy finish.
MoM - Ramires - A virtuoso performance in the centre, stopping Asamoah and a great goal.

Rapid Wien 1-4 Napoli - Lavezzi(11, 39), Trochowski(23), Cavani(85)
080319_-lavezzi-esultanza-napoli-fiorentina-1_gol-2_news.jpg

A fantastic European night for Napoli ensured they continued their resurgence in form. Lavezzi took it beyond two players, before stabbing home early on. A fine run on the wing from Trochowski saw him cut inside, and curl the ball home on 23 minutes. Things got worse for the hosts, as lavezzi scored another, making it three goals in the first-half. Drazan gave the hosts some dignity with a fine finish on 63 minutes, before Cavani struck with five minutes left.
MoM - E. Lavezzi - Two goals, and an all-round sterling performance.

Cagliari 2-3 Napoli - Hamsik(25), Quagliarella(86), Cavani(90)

A late show from Napoli gave them three points. Ciro struck the opener, finding space and slotting home. Hamsik equalized with a fine individual effort. Ciro scored again just after half-time, and Cagliari looked safe, until Quagliarella struck on 86 minutes to level the scores. Cavani headed from a Zeman corner to win the game deep into injury time.
MoM - F. Quagliarella - A fantastic performance, and Napoli are looking stronger with him in the squad.

Napoli 3-1 Fiorentina - Gargano(9), Cavani(46, 76)
cavani-napoli1.jpg

A strong Napoli side defeated a poor 9-man Fiorentina. Gargano scored form the edge of the box after 9 minutes to give the hosts the lead. Gilardino equalized just before half time, but Napoli looked in control. A minute after the restart, and Cavani struck to give the hosts the lead again. Gimenez and Gilardino were sent off, before Cavani scored his second on 76 minutes.
MoM - E. Cavani - Two goals and a very solid performance.

Siena 4-0 Napoli
cannavaro-paolo2.jpg

A depleted Napoli suffered their worst defeat under Stuart Watson, after conceding 4 against newly-promoted Siena. Reginaldo scored after 30 minutes, and three minutes later, Mastronunzio scored a quickfire brace to give the high-flying Siena a healthy lead. Tziolis scored a fourth mid-way through the second half to kill the game of completely.
MoM - E. Lavezzi - the rest of the team were woeful, and this man tried his best to create openings.

Champions League Grp
Napoli 7-1 Benfica - Sosa(1), Bassong(14, 81), Hamsik(39, 69 pen), Trochowski(53), Cavani(55)

Bassong headed from a corner to double the lead, before Hamsik guided a shot beyond Roberto after 39 minutes. Saviola struck just after half time, but this sent Napoli into a frenzy. An incredible finish from Trochowski gave the hosts fourth, with Cavani striking two minutes later. A Hamsik penalty made it a trouncing, and the Bassong goal made this an embarrassment for Benfica.

MATCHES

Roma 1-2 Napoli - Hamsik(86), Ramires(90)
t1larg.jpg

The run continued, as Napoli left it late to see off Roma. The game was a very drab affair, with neither side taking the initiative, and bothe sides missing several big chances. Napoli's cause was not helped , as on-loan midfielder Tiote was sent off for a professional foul before half-time. It took Roma until the 84th minute to take advantage of the spare man, as Brighi smashed home. Two minutes later, and Hamsik took the ball through before striking to level the score. Another fine build-up saw Ramires finish easily, subsequently taking the points for Napoli.
MoM - M. Hamsik - A goal and an assist, and continued to press after the red card.

Napoli 2-0 Genoa - Cavani(45, 69)
lavezzi_napoli.jpg

Napoli keep impressing the hardiest of critics, after a solid 2 goal win over Genoa. Partenopi dominated possession throughout, and it was a pinpoint Sosa free-kick, which was headed home by Bassong that opened the scoring. A solid game saw Napoli contain Genoa continuously, and were rewarded at the death, Lavezzi finishing off a superb team move to make the game safe.
MoM - S. Bassong - Continues to impress with another solid defensive performance and a goal.

Napoli winger Martin Zeman came inside before unleashing a shot into the top corner. Just after half time, Jose Sosa chipped over Reina to double the lead. Twenty minutes later, Cannavaro headed home from a Hamsik corner to finish the game.
MoM - D. Aogo - Assisted all three goals, and could have scored himself.

Just 6 minutes later, Bassong headed a Sosa corner past Julio Cesar to double the lead. Pandev scored a fantastic goal on 27 minutes, curling home from 25 yards. Just When You Thought Hamsik Was Dangerous Enough...

Hamsik.gif

As Napoli show dominance in Italy, we take a look at their midfield star, Slovakian midfielder Marek Hamsik

After a superb season last season, Marek Hamsik is hoping to go one better with Napoli. The club are sat at the top of Serie A, and are all but qualified for the Champions League Knockout round, a position the Partenopi are not used to.
Clearly, Watson has molded a fantastic blend of skill and strength, and youth and experience. Watch any Napoli match from this season, and there is one player who is involved in everything. Marek Hamsik.

The 24-year old, from Banská Bystrica in Slovakia has came from the lower echelons of Slovakian football to the dizzy heights of the World Cup and Champions League in 6 years, a journey which some players never make. He was an integral part of Napoli's Europa League winning squad, and has asserted himself even more this season. He has formed a formidable midfield partnership with Brazil's Ramires, a partnership which has led to Hamsik finally adding the one thing that was missing from his game.

Goals. So far, the Slovak has hit EIGHT goals this term, which has surpassed his total for the whole of last season. Napoli know that this player is a world-class player, and they will have to fend off the big clubs, at least until they join that elite group, which looks like being sooner rather than later. It certainly seems that Stuart Watson is getting the very best out of Hamsik, of which he is reaping the benefits.

As the Champions League heads into the later stages, this player could make Napoli the dark horses for the crown in Munich come May.

Napoli Dealt Cavani Blow

cavani-napoli1.jpg

Top scorer Edinson Cavani was today ruled out for up to SIX months, after a severe hamstring tear, sustained in the Bari match.

The Uruguayan, who has been lethal so far this season, is expected to travel to Switzerland and Denmark to see specialist sports surgeons to assess the damage later this week.

The injury leaves Napoli manager Stuart Watson with Quagliarella and Trejo the only fit strikers, with Lavezzi almost two weeks away from fitness. Rumours are circulating that Watson will have to bring in another striker in the upcoming transfer window, with several strikers linked.

Ivan Marcano headed home seven minutes later from a Zeman free-kick. A Hamsik strike made it three, and a Cavani goal right on half-time made it four. Hamsik finished the game off with his second.
