Hello! Well diamond 41212 or 4132 are almost the same but one is more "daring" then the other; To be honest depends how you really want to play the game, you can even play 4231 with 2 mezzalas 433 with mezzals etcetc even 343 with mezzalas, you will be more "bangable" from counter-attacks but in my opinion if you don't like the way the football is played there is no reason to play a tactic at all.
This M.E. is a bit complicated regarding test because DM(zone roles) are provinding same results or even better then CM(zone Roles), so that's why we see more "volantes" or "pivots" setup and to balancing the team asset is just easier. I am talking about maximum micro-aspect and not really about how a tactic should work overall. Everyone should adapt the tactic for what he needs and want to see from his/her game expierience.
Regarding volantes they are really broken but you need actually players that know how to play the role.

Try 4231 Simple Positive Headache v2 Swanton bomb special IV (edit) with very effective results!

Start with Nigeria under 20, won the african nation cup, then finalist to the u20 world cup after beating Endrick's Brazil.
After that, sign up with the 4/5th of israelian ligue, won it, and it was a piece of cake (some defeat here and there, due to rotation mostly, and the cup final was won by adversary goalkeeper.

Ok, so i've created a league test scenario, we are Roma (best team world ) West Ham/Napoli: I've picked the best 140/150 player from each team like for example :

GK= Rui Patricio
DL/DD= Cresswell (ofc the foot was changed as well and role)
DCL/D= Mancini (dcl with left foot on 20 and dcd with 20 on right foot)
MC = Tomáš Souček (my favorite player on this zone
AML/D=Khvicha Kvaratskhelia
STC= Scamacca

With those kind of players the team A/B/C/D will gonna face on the same scenario and same IA manager but with different shapes the elite teams of the game (M.City,Pool,PSG,R.Madrid,Barcelona), players are all freezed with FMRTE to give the best scenario output of the tactic
I will run 6 times(2160 games) the league for each tactic (I will for start test the best tactic i've made(the one got best results around the fm-community sites,so i can provide some results even when we are sub/top (i don't know if that is the right term for a 140 CA team vs 160+ CA team)

The players can play multiple roles just to provide the results of the tactic overall, in-game you will need someone that can play the role at all.
I've kept only on group A for IA players the traits of the players i was sure they were not that impactfull but you will notice that on group A the results will be a bit lower for that reason, to provide even the differencies in-game.

Ok, Ive tested those best "rated" tactics :

The shocking things are 2 :

How Group A (the one with traits is better compared to others one and i've just checked a bit again corners setup on just last run and it was like shocking the gap goals between the "normal routine" vs long shot on left and to post on right routine almost 60 goals in one season just from corners... vs Elite Teams.
442 and 343 was with normal routine, i guess with some of tweaks 442 can do really good perfomance.
