Newcastle 4-1 Manchester City

Iconic - Beckham (above playing for England) nets the opener.

Fans at St.James' Park were treated to a show today as they watched their side hammer The Citizens 4-1. Manager Craig Todd watched on excitedly as his side romped Manchester City.

It was former England captain David Beckham who got the scoring underway. As Iker Muniain was fouled on 25 yards out, Newcastle and Manchester City fans only had one player in mind to step up and take the free-kick. He did so. Beckham started his run-up before sweetly curling the ball up and over the wall and nestling it into the top left hand corner. He celebrated with team-mates Andy Carroll and Kevin Nolan. As Nolan and Carroll strolled off Beckham turned round to the opposing Citizens fans and pounded his chest proudly. Echoing jeers could be heard and rang out inside the ground.

The show was to be stolen by Iker Muniain though. The little Spainiard had been a revelation since joining from Athletic Bilbao in the summer for £15million. Some feared that the 17 year old would flop with such an expensive transfer fee. Not to be. The youngster strolled onto the field today with fellow forward Andy Carroll and was a clear MOM winner. His first game on the half hour mark. Nolan picked the ball up from Scott Dann and turned to attack the City goal. As Nolan skipped past De Jong he fed the ball wide to David Beckham. He looked up and spotted Muniain making the run towards the front post. No doubt in Newcastle fans mind Beckham picked out Muniain as he rattled home a diving header. His 2nd came in the 2nd half as he scored a stunning individual goal. A poor pass from Diego Lugano found the feet of Muniain 35 yards out. With only Carroll in support and 4 City defenders, the odds were stacked against them for a goal. Nevertheless, a goal was scored. Muniain ran at Lugano with pace and eased past him. Kolo Toure analysed the possible threat and pointed for Boateng to come across and mark Carroll. But Toure couldn't stop the Spainish Under 21 starlet either. Muniain cut inside onto his left foot past Toure, leaving only the keeper in his way. Joe Hart was no match for Muniain, who put it across the England number 1, making it 3-1 to Newcastle.

The 4th for Newcastle was a goal from skipper Kevin Nolan and was throughly deserved too. A neat 1-2 between Nolan and midfield partner Ivan Rakitic seen Nolan put through on goal. After his intial shot was saved, the Liverpublian made no mistake about the 2nd attempt.

Ivan Rakitic also picked up a broken leg in this game and will be out for 6 months. This has sparked rage from many as it is a 3rd leg break Dutch midfielder Nigel De Jong has caused. In a voulgar tackle, De Jong lunged in at Rakitic, visibly snapping his leg in 2. The replay is to graphic to show again, though we've been informed the BBC have a more detailed anaylises on the situation that faces the Toon.

Newcastle find form in February

After the mediocre month that was January, the Toon looked to improve their performance so they could maintain their 8th position on the table, or even improve on it. A easier month than most in terms of the amount of matches, but the quality of opposition made it as hard as ever.

Bolton provide the first game of the month as they came to St.James' Park for an exciting encounter. If the match had not been plagued by injuries and sending offs (1), it might have been the game of the year. Newcastle took an early 2 goal lead as Hlousek netted twice in 20 minutes, aswell as a Bolton goal just after, the Toon into the break with high spirits. The second half was amazing, end to end quality, attacking prowess shut down by brilliant goalkeepers. The keepers stood out in the second half as nothing beat them, clean sheet for the second half at both ends. Injuries to Kalou and Gosling dampened the joyous celebrations at the end, but both injuries were not too serious.

A trip to struggling Aston Villa was the second test of the month, and Beresford's side passed with flying colours. Goals from Carroll and Coloccini won the 3 points for the Toon in a dominant performance. Aston Villa counter-attacked every now and then, threatening the Newcastle goal, but there was no way they were getting past Ochoa, who is in the form of his life. Coloccini scored the second for the Toon, and the moment it went over the line, you could see the jubilation of every Newcastle fan in the stadium. A great start to the month, but could it continue?

Another very tough game followed, Man Utd came to St.James' Park in a match that could well decide who finished in 7th place, but not certain as it is only February. In the three previous matches, Newcastle have lost all three under Beresford's control. Twice losing 3-2, once losing 3-1, would today change it? Man Utd took a 2 goal lead into half time after goals from Berbatov and Gibson (pen) in the first 20 minutes. Gibson made it 3, yet again, but no one saw the comeback that was in store. A few changes from Beresford, and the Newcastle side made an incredible change. With 20 minutes left, Lovenkrands made it 3-1, and Kalou made it 3-2 only 4 minutes later. The atmosphere was tense, Newcastle attacked in numbers, and Man Utd were just coping. Newcastle did everything in their power, but could not find a third goal, and walked away with nothing.

Restoring faith for Newcastle

A trip to White Hart Lane to end the month, and what a game it was. Peter Crouch put Tottenham in the lead 22 minutes into the first half with a simple header, lost his marker, Cahill, and had an easy touch into the net. Andy Carroll made it 1-1 seconds before halftime, and it was game on. 10 minutes into the second half, Carroll made it 2-1, and Beresford showed some emotion on the bench for the first time this year. Carroll ran all the way to Beresford and the two embraced, but the game was not over. Tottenham now looked for some revenge, and Newcastle took this. They sat back waiting for their opportunities, and Salomon Kalou took one opportunity with 15 mintues left to make it 3-1, and a definite 3 points. A great win against one of Newcastle's rival for Europe.

So a great month for Newcastle and Beresford, 3 wins from 4 games, they can definitely push on to 7th or higher from here, Europe is their's for the taking! March is an easier month for Newcastle, only two games, Portsmouth and Chelsea, but they will need their A game to get maximum points.

Beresford's Man of the Month award went to Andy Carroll after some classy performances in all of February's games.

Newcastle March on to Europe, Maybe

After a tough but successful month of games in February, March looked a lot easier, with only 2 games, one against Chelsea and one against Portsmouth. Tough games, but the easy schedule made sure that Newcastle were ready for both games.

Portsmouth were first up, and they came to St.James' Park for a highly anticipated encounter. Newcastle really pushed from the word go and within the first 10 minutes, Portsmouth keeper, Matt Murray had to make 3 saves. Newcastle couldn't find a way through Murray, and eventually Portsmouth took the lead on a counter attack, in the 48th minute. It was easy to see John Beresford's frustration at his team's lacklustre finishing. Eventually Newcastle put the ball in the back of the net, and it was Peter Lovenkrands who did, but it was the first and only time for the game, and the final result was a 1-1 draw. A disappointing point for Newcastle who were really looking for a win.

Lovenkrands puts Newcastle back on terms

Newcastle then travelled to Stamford Bridge to face an undefeated Chelsea side who were in the form of their life. Luis Suarez put Chelsea in the lead in the 14th minute, but it was undeserved due to the way the match was playing out. The game was surprisingly even, Chelsea only had 2 more shots than Newcastle, but unfortunately, none of Newcastle's 11 shots tested Petr Cech in the Chelsea goal. Fernando Gago did score, but it was an own goal, and it was in the last seconds of injury time in the second half. Beresford shook his head, walked off the field and didn't even talk to his team until the next day, supposedly. An unfortunate result for Newcastle.

So with 1 point from 2 games, are Newcastle on their way down, or are they just having a slight hiccup? Still sitting in 8th with 2 months left and 6 games left, Newcastle can push into the European placings, but it is very unlikely.

Adam Hlousek won Beresford's Man of the Month award after two fine games, and at the moment, he is looking like Newcastle's best player, hopefully he can continue this!

BBC produce October update!

Good start - Fabio nets opener for Newcastle against Fulham.

Newcastle United have made a flying start to the Premier League. And in thr month of October this didn't look stopping. The young pertnership of Carroll continues to blossom, something that is impressing all.

They started the month in stunning fashion beating Manchester City 4-1. It was a victory in which nobody expected, if anything they expected Newcastle to get beat. But it was a an impressive brace from Iker Muniain and goals from Kevin Nolan and David Beckham which handed them the win. Muniain keeps up his fine form and has settled in well to Todd's new 4-4-2 formation. After playing up top at first with Thierry Hnery, he's recent injury has paved the way for Carroll to slide back in. The 2 have been playing very well together.

The following hame they travelled away to Fulham to face an in form Mark Hughes side. Many expected a draw to be the most likely outcome of the game but it was again Newcastle who took the win, picking up a 2-1 victory. It was young LB Fabio who opened the scoring after 3 minutes, netting his first goal for Newcastle. The 2nd soon followed as Spainard Iker Muniain again found himself on the scoresheet. This has sparked a heated debate in Spain as to why Barcelona and Real Madrid let him slip through their grasps.

But Newcastle were brought crashing down due to the visit of Tottenham to St.James' Park. The London side steamrolled over the top of the Magpies, winning 3-1 in the process. But, again, Muniain found himself in the right place to net a close finish and keep up his excellant form. Todd stated after the game that you can't win every game. He went on to say that his side had been poor and he expected them to imrpove in their next game against Nottingham Forest in the Carling Cup.

And the message got through. It was wantaway winger Jonas Gutierrez who netted, scoring his trademark goal from last season, cutting in from the left and shooting into the top corner. It was around 25 yards out and already a goal of the competition contender. Newcastle march into the next round of the Cup, they look like they are a side who could really win this. They have been drawn against rivals Middlesbrough in the next round. It should be a good game.

So what do you think of Newcastle's October? Are You happy, content, or dissatisfied? If you are a Newcastle fan, why not tell us what you think. Email us a [email protected] or text us 'YOUR NAME' followed by 'NEWCASTLE' and then your message. Gary will read several out on Saturday's MOTD.

Ummm.... I think toddzy's better with tactics and stuff, but I think I make better transfers ;)

Yeh I'd probably agree you make better signings. I tend to blow a shitload on golden oldies. Thus far though, I'm just edging it.
