The Better Half´s Tactical Sets (No Wizard)

In Europe I was more cautious, I think also I became better at selecting which tactic later on in the season.
I lost 1 game in europe, home against Munich which was 1-3. Had more chances and shots, but it happens
In the league I attacked all my home games, going unbeaten an drawing only 2 games scoring 46 and conceding only 11. Away from home I was more cautious, so naturally didn't score as many, I was happy only conceding 11 on the road. Lost my last 2 away games, but seemed to pick up some bad injuries and had the CL final playing on my mind too.
I changed players long shots to rarely after about 10 games which saw me create a few more chances for my striker.
Delph was my undoubted player of the season, scoring 14 and assisting 9 from the right of central midfield (without playmaker role)

Just starting a new season, I'll let you know how it goes!

I dont use a playmaker either unless he is mouch better than the other players
Looking forward for some more feedback, thanks

First beta of the Narrow "451" Framework for 10.3 ( this is the download link)

The new framework will include 3 basic version

* Attacking - former Attack Home
* Balanced
* Defensive

..with 4 additional versions to be used when getting to know the set

* Overload - very, very early beta
* Slow breakdown - former Control
* Balanced +++ - former Attack away
* Quick Counter - former counter

3 more frameworks will be uploaded

Wide "451" can be tweaked into all kinds of 451/443
Narrow "442", that can be tweaked into a 4132, 4312, narrow diamond, box
Wide " 442" same tweaks but wide formation

Just played a few games with your new 4231 Narrow. My first thoughts...

Better on this patch than old tactics, LOVE overload, much more effective than attack for home games, haven't been brave enough to try it away yet.
I am top scorer in the league and conceded least... need I say more. Just won 4-1 v Portsmouth, and missed 2 penalties!

Thanks, let you know how my season pans out!

Hello TheBetterHalf

Hi this will be my 1st ever post, 1st just want to thank you for yr tactics last years tactics, they were Awesome. This will be my 1st time using yr 2010 tac, i downloaded your - 1 - PATCH10.3 - NARROW451 tactic. Am playing a friend on-line and have started to notice that i have so much possession but my team just cant score goals. my using the same tactics on my off-line game with Liverpool and am actually scoring goals, have only played around 6 matches but there's a big different between that and my Barcelona game i play with my friend, am thinking maybe its the strikers but there is too much talent in the barce team for it to just be the striker. Any suggestions? thanks

MILLWALL, 4TH Season

Formation: Wide Diamond
Major tweaks: Using the AMC as a link player and the DMC as a slightly more creative one set to make mixed in t-balls and passing. Using the FCright as a complete FC and the FCleft as a drifting target man ( no box checked though)

Got a red card in the 32nd minute and could not cope with the pressure the put on me

I don't get the tweaks for the position..if the mentality = team + 2, what does that mean actually??

I don't get the tweaks for the position..if the mentality = team + 2, what does that mean actually??

It means that this player should be set to have a mentality 2 notches higher than the team mentality( in the team settings, not the average teams mentality) If the marked player in the screenshots should be set to mentality = Team -2, you would have to tick the mentality box and set it to the same as the player beneath him

So does it only applies to the mentality scroll bar only or the other bars as well??

the suggested mentality change applies to the mentality and mentality scorll bar. Other changes effect other things

THE BARNSLEY PROJECT

This will be my first project in the 10.3, using my new frameworks. Just like in the previous projects, I will try to tell you about my reasoning as how and why I will use frameworks, versions, tweaks to the d-line and wide play etc, etc.

AS we have a restricting of 4 screenshots/post, further posts, matches, transfers etc etc, will be put in the thread as usuall and linked to here in the OP so that I ca

We start of by looking at the actual squad and what possibilities that opens up for us this season. Screens of all the players are put up in links that you have to click

Media prediction:
22nd
Balance: £1.6 m
Transfer Budget:Adjusted to £25k
Wage budget: Adjusted to £65k/w
Current wage bill: £61k/w

THE SQUAD

barnoverall.png

DEFENDERS

Rob Kozluk
Steve Foster
Ryan Shotton - Loan from Stoke ( pre-start)
Bobby Hassell
Nathan Doyle
Darren Moore
O´Neil Thompson
Carl Dickinson - Loan from Stoke ( pre-start)

Here we find a few adequate players. Foster is our best DC and our fullbacks can play the part although we only have one left footed DB, Dickinson, and he is on loan. Darren Moore is a player that should have retired a few years ago and if I have to play him, then I dont expect to win. Hassel is a player that will need to cover up in midfield as we have too few MCs

CENTRAL MIDFIELDERS

Hugo Colace
Anderson Silva
Jacob Butterfield

Too few players here actually and we will probably have to use some of our defenders in this positions as well. Anderson Silva is rather good and cab we used both as an attacking Mc and a DMC. Colace on the other hand can only be given defensive duties as he lacks in off the ball, only having 5 in that stat
Butterfield is a player that can play both roles although not being really good at it

WIDE MIDFIELDERS

Martin Devaney
Adam Hamill
Iain Hume . Injuried the first day of training, 4-5 Months
Mounir El Haimour
Emil Halfredsson - Loan from Reggina ( pre-start)

Hume being out Injured is a blow as I consider him being a good player for the level playing at. Our loan from reggina, Halfredsson, is our star player and he will probably also be used in a FC position as we dont have that many attackers

ATTACKERS

Daniel Bogdanovic
Jon Macken
Andy Gray
Jamil Adam- Reserve team player

Bogdanovic knows how to put the ball into the net but the rest is poor

The SWOT - a summary

The main Strength of the team are

Our determination. This is a team that should be able to fight for the points, not giving up when 2-0 behind

The main Weaknesses are..

The squad depth and lack of specific competence up front.
Too few MCs to play 3 central midfielders
Too few attackers

The main Opportunities are...

Our healthy economy will provide us with more options in the future
Finding some free transfer bargains
Selling some of our players on high wages, making it possible to add more squad depth within the wage budget

The main Threats are the...

Players wanting out: Both Foster in defence and Bogdanovic attracts interest of better clubs and as they wont bring in that much money of sold, we will struggle to get equally good players as replacements.
Injuries: If getting one or two defenders out, we will struggle big time. The same goes for if Bogdanovic gets injured

Conclusion - Framework and formation and framework to be used

As we only have one good FC, it would be easy to come to the conclusion that we should play a 451 but as we have even fewer MCs. this is not an option. I am also not sure if Bogdanovic is good enough to play as a lone FC, a positions that in my opinion needs a player that have better stats in Creativity and strength.

Our ambition this season will be based in reality and as the media predicting us 22nd is a rather fair one, our aim will be to get a safe middtable position by grinding out results when playing away and try to play attacking at home. If we get injuries in midfield or defence, we might have to play attacking in all matches
as we simply wont be good enough in defending ( remember Reading in the EPL )

So knowing this, we will play a wide 4132, using the following formation and tactics that will be slightly tweaked before each game

Defensive
Balanced

The Barnsley project

First match of the season

Sheffield Wednesday - Barnsley 0-3

Match odds: Even...11/5...11/5
Managers preferences: Nothing special
Pitch: Rather long and narrow
Weather: Noting special

Tactical reasoning and tweaking:

Starting version: Defensive

A more cautious approach where we hold on to the ball a lot and stay in our defensive shape with the aim to perhaps ****** a point late in game

Tweaks

As the pitch is rather long, I dropped the d-line slightly and to be sure that out wingers flood the midfield, I let them cut inside, focusing the play through the middle

Attackers: Bogdanovic is used as the more creative FCr as as his ppms is " runs with ball down right flank", I want him to have a free role, hold up ball and cross often and from mixed into the box. When I saw that he was tight marked and closed down always, I let the Fcs swap position

We controlled the game perfectly and they where restricted to long shots/blocked shots. Bogdanovic was behind all 3 goals.( screens of 1-0, 2-0, 3-0 was a penalty after he went down in the area)

The Barnsley project

League Cup

Port Vale - Barnsley 0-2

Managers preferences: Nothing special
Pitch: Rather long
Weather: Nothing special

Tactical reasoning and tweaking:

Starting version: Balanced

A balanced version between attack and defensive. Again,we use lots of players holding up ball to keeo possession beter

Tweaks

As the pitch is rather long, I dropped the d-line slightly. Our wingers are still set to cut inside but in this version, I give the ML more creative freedom and he often goes down the line to cross. AS the versions plays rather narrow, the free role on the wingers combined with cut inside actually makes them cut inside to provide easy passing option and then using their free role to find space wide.

Again, we controlled the game perfectly and had no problem winning. Port vale was just too poor

The Barnsley project

Match 2

Barnsley - Coventry 1-1

Managers preferences: Nothing special
Pitch: My homeground has a normal pitch
Weather: Nothing special

Tactical reasoning and tweaking:

Starting version: Balanced

As I am yet uncertain if we can play a quicker and more attacking game, using a high d-line, I again went for Balanced to keep possession

Tweaks

As they formed a defensive 4141, I removed the cutinside option for the wingers

We controlled the game perfectly but failed to score so instead of 2-0, they went 1-1. I finished the game with Attack but it only resulted in them alsmot wining. No more high d-line for me...

The Barnsley project

Match 3

Barnsley - Preston 1-3

Managers preferences: Closing Down high, play down the flanks
Pitch: My homeground has a normal pitch
Weather: It started to rain heavily

Tactical reasoning and tweaking:

Starting version: Balanced

As I am yet uncertain if we can play a quicker and more attacking game, using a high d-line, I again went for Balanced to keep possession.

Tweaks

Here, I wanted to test if our team was good enough to play against a team pushing forward down the flanks, putting us under heavy pressure. the answer was simply...NO !!

Our right flank with Doyle behind Butterfield just could not cope at all with their ML Wallace and United loan, FCleft Danny Wellbeck. This is what happens when you have **** defenders up against much better and pacer attacking players. To me, this is a slight flaw of the game, some players ability giving them multiple advantages over an opponent but then again, its my fault as the manager to actually not checking he was playing on their team

After going 2-0 down pretty early, I switched to defensive instead and after that it was n even game with us pushing forward the last 10 minutes for an equalizer, conceding another goal instead

Pitch: Short

No tweaks, I just used the default one uploaded in the Post 4, hopping for the same scenario as in the game against Sheff Wed,,,and it happened

Short cross in to the box- Goal

Short passing sideways into the center - Goal

Well done so far TBH :) Bogdanovic always scores a lot on mine, I think he also had 11 assists once for Barnsley.

Birmingham - Barnsley 0-0 f.t 1-1 e.t 5-3 pen

Managers preferences: Nothing

Did not have any high hopes for this game but I am delighted that we managed 0-0 after fulltime. This means that we are yet to concede when playing away during normal time

Barnsley - Reading 3-0

Prematch - The injuries

injuries.png

Managers preferences: Nothing
Pitch:Nothing
Weather: Nothing

Tactical reasoning and tweaking:

Starting version: Defensive

AS we seem do to so well with Defensive, i carry on with it
I dropped the d-line slightly as I was forced to play with slow DCs, the other ones being either injured or tired after playing in the cup. But as these DCs are very strong in the air, I showed their wingers down the line for crosses, resulting in crosses or corners

The Barnsley project

Match 7

Watford - Barnsley 1-2

Managers preferences: Nothing special
Pitch: Rather long
Weather: Nothing special

Tactical reasoning and tweaking:

Starting version: Balanced

I wanted to see if we could play our own game instead of using defensive all the time

Tweaks

As the pitch is rather long, I dropped the d-line slightly. Then I dropped it even further as Watford was said to be played quick and direct. This way, I wanted to make sure that their attacking players where unable to get the ball in possession behind our d-line, restricting them to launching quick shot from outside the area. Here is the result..

watford.png

In the end, we managed to win the game with 2-1

The Barnsley project

The table after having played almost half the season. I have used Defensive when playing away and at home when the odds have been against me. The tweaks made have been the same as in the first matches, dropping the d-line when I use my slow defenders or when playing in a long pitch. Removing the cut inside option for the wingers when up against a AI using one or two DMC.

The rest of the season will look a bit different though as teams are now playing more defensive against me so we will see what it brings, I might have to switch to a slightly more attacking formation, still using the more cautious versions

Final Table first season
[/B]

Promoted after playing 0-0 at home and wining 2-0 away to Bristol City, then beating WBA on penalties at Wembley ( 0-0 FT)

next season will be very interesting. This one, I had 7 decent players of which 3 was loanies, now returning to their clubs, 2 are sold and will leave in July. This leaves us with only Anderson Silva and Hamill as the only decent CCC-players, the rest are League One quality

2ND SEASON

First game - Blackburn - Barnsley 1-3 ( 0-1, 0-2, 0-3, 1-3)

We started with the new formation - Narrow 4231, using Defensive

We where in control for the whole game and they had no chance. When looking at the screens, you can see that we make far too many longshots that are either blocked or misses its target, This is mainly because we sit with many men behind the ball and when Drincic, at the 2nd screen is outside the area, there is very little movement and his passing options are very limited, hence he takes a shot. Is this a bad thing when getting the results ? Not really, but wanting to avoid this, then simply make the wide amcs take more runs from deep( set to mixed). This might have a price though as we might get caught on the break

The Barnsley project

2ND SEASON

4THgame Man United - Barnsley - 0-3

We started with the new formation - Narrow 4231, using Defensive

Here, I restricted my outer AMCs to not making any runs from deep as I wanted to play very, very safe with lots of men behind the ball. After watching the first 5 minutes in full mode, I saw that they played with a high d-line, playing very wide. Then I decided to risk my 0-0 and go for 1-0 instead....so I switched to Quick Counter and it payed off. Here, the first goal is crucial and its 50-50 who gets it. This time we did and then, when they pushed forward more, we scored 2 and 3-0. After that, we reverted to Defensive

Please notice that we DO have a rather good team that with some micromanagement should be able to push for Europe, especially when teams play headless against us, underestimating us big time. Also notice that Man U will not we in the top flight this year as they have not made the correct transfers and still play their older players that are now starting to lack in motivation and the more physical attributes

The Barnsley project

2ND SEASON

Have been using, up to now, the narrow 4231 from the narrow 451 framework

Tweaks:

- The Wide AMCs cut inside against flat 442s and move into channels when the AI uses one or two DMC

- The AMC acts like a attacking support man, staying central with no wide play settings
- The FC acts like a strong TM with free role and HUB, no wide play setting
