Hopefully Mata signs a new contract soon to put these rumours to bed. Can't believe people actually think Chelsea offered £10m + Mata for Rooney. They have been stupid in the past but not that stupid.

More like £20m + Rooney for Mata

It's not that people think. Its that someone somewhere was happy to let this be known. Still don't understand the contract delay.

Well the media have been trying to unsettle Mata and Luiz all summer with their 'Mourinho hates Spanish players', 'Mourinho thinks Luiz is a horrible player' with no substance. He hasn't even met them yet, just called them to ignore all transfer speculation because those two in particular have been targeted.

Just when you think it couldn't get worse out comes an extremely one sided deal that is nothing more than laughable.

Except it wasn't the media this time. Chelsea openly accused United. That's what makes it all the more bizarre. For once it wasnt media shenanigans at play.

Although considering Jose only wants Rooney, not as one sided as it looks.

Either Chelsea value Rooney at £55m-£60m or they value Mata for £5m less than they bought him for, despite winning back to back player of the year awards and becoming one of the best players in the league.

Actually Moses, Hazard, Schurrle can all play on the right.

He means left-footed on the right, which Mourinho prefers, and he will definitely want someone to play there if Mata leaves (which I doubt very much).

Neither, no chance.

I havent gone through all the pages so don't know if someones mentioned but I'm not saying the mourinho doesn't want rooney because he maybe does who knows. BUT does anyone think all this could be a jose ruse to get under Moyes skin and drive a wedge between him and a key player I might be wrong but its all a bit odd to me from both clubs

That would be most transparent and obvious ruse of the century.

If selling Mata meant getting Rooney there could be some reason. Ditto Luiz if he felt he could get someone better.

Stop selectively targeting my posts. None of those players you mentioned are left-footed like Mata. Mourinho likes players who are left-footed and can play on the right and vice versa. Only one he has is Mata and he mentioned that himself

You realise Moyes also said Rooney DEFINITELY WON'T leave too?

Comparing apples and oranges here. Rooney wants to leave. Has been relegated to second-choice behind Van Persie. Did not get called upon in big games last season. Mata and Luiz on the other hand are the core of the team. Leaders of the new era. Don't want to leave at all. Speculation about them is bizzare

Nothing was selective there in the slightest.

Hazard is two footed, and quite comfortably so.

Oh and its not apples and oranges at all between Rooney and Mata/Luiz.

Rooney might be behind RVP for the FC role, but Moyes was quite clear about the fact he wanted to use them both at the same time.

The point stands that clubs often say one thing, and do another.

The point is that you're taking Mourinho's word as gospel and not believing Moyes when they're publicly saying the exact same thing. Especially with the way Mourinho likes to play with the media, excuse me for not believing something just because he says it.

Exactly my point.

Spent my entire football life growing up with Fergie. Naturally sceptical of anything managers say to the media. :P

That man would lie to his mother if it would give him an advantage

Perhaps this whole saga of Rooney is just a smokescreen put out by Mourinho. Reports that we made a bid for Higuan too

But you are ignoring the main point. Mourinho himself said that mata was the only player available in that mould. Perhaps he wants to keep Hazard on the left where he is best considering he is our brightest attacking talent behind Mata

Again irrelevant.

What he is saying and what he might potentially do are two separate things entirely. This is the entire point. Managers lie when they want/need/can get an advantage. Mata is the only one =/= I will not sell Mata if I actually can quietly engineer a best setup for the club. You are still just assuming that he is 100% not lying, while saying Moyes could be for saying the same thing.

My point is they could both quite patently do something very different to that they ahve been saying if it will put them in a much better position.

Joel already summed it up.

When that happened (Rooney's unhappiness) in 2010 I knew it was all about money and he got it. He got his money. Now, the situation is a little bit different as the board said they would not offer him a new contract. He is actually looking to leave the club. I actually believed the Mata rumours because they were there for weeks and I just know Jose doesn't care if a player is world-class, he just wants his type of players. He isn't used to having a half squad of dwarfs either. So that made me believe that rumour. Mike and Joel said it well actually, we really don't know what's going on behind the scenes. I don't believe either of them. I certainly don't believe Jose. lol.
