Can't believe some Chelsea fans are unhappy with the signing of Mereiles. A year ago, I was going mental at the fact we'd spent over £10M on a player (Mereiles).
You've got him for £12M, which is just over a quarter of what you were prepared to pay for Modric, and Mereiles had a better season last year than Modric. The only negative is he's slightly older than Modric. Don't think some fans realise what a good signing they've got.

The clubs couldn't agree a fee. Chelsea's valuation was much lower than what Porto wanted I think.
quite possible but if true, Porto just shot themselves in the foot by hanging onto a player who did not want to remain their any longer

CJ, look at the stats - in Mereiles first season in English football, he bettered Luka Modric.
Also, could argue they offered you £40M as that's his worth to the Tottenham, as he's your star player. In real terms, he's worth no more than £15/20M. Mereiles cost less as he'd become a squad player for us, not a key player. Plus he's older so that detracts from his value.

we did not offer you beyond 30m... I suspect 40m would have been accepted as good ole 'arry was pretty keen on adding more players

think Modric is worth more than 15/20m... no offence but valuing him that much is putting him in the same bracket as Henderson, think we were not ready to pay more than 30m/35m for him and Tottenham were holding out for 40m
No no no, you're missing the point. I'm talking about real player value. What I mean is theres two different values. How much a club values a player based on how important they are to the team, and then a realistic value that is based on performances, ages etc.
So, you say Jordan Henderson. Liverpool signed him for around £20 Million, but realistically, he's worth no more than £10M. However, Sunderland valued him at £20 Million because last season, he was one of their key players.
Another example. Fernando Torres. Last season, his realistic value was nowhere near the £50 Million that Chelsea paid for him, but because of how important an asset he was to Liverpool, his value exceeded that of his worth.
I'm probably not explaining it very well tbh, but I know what I mean..
Modric isn't worth 40m but he was by far one of the best midfielders last season.
