Who’s really to Blame in Club vs Legend Contract Row?
Luckily enough for all us who support Chelsea this day and age we have a whole host of cult hero’s who we all love and will do forever for their contribution to the team. Players such as Ballack, Desailly, Ferreira, Le Saux, Alex and so on and so forth. Cult hero’s are players who gave the club a great service while with us giving their all in every match and/or have a good relationship with the fans. Legends on the other hand normally come once in a blue moon, Osgood, Harris, Bonetti and Dixon to name the most well known and agreed upon with fans. That was until Chelsea was bought by Roman back in 2003 and rapidly changed this side from steady Premier League side to a globally feared side winning trophies like never before. Winning trophies with certain players playing certain roles will bring the “legend” word out more often between us fans and there we have a batch at the club currently.
Obviously the recently departed Drogba is classed as a legend for what he did for the club I would say even before the goal and penalty in Munich. I also think most would agree current club players Cech, Cole, Terry and Lampard are legends and don’t think that can even be disputed. My main focus here is on the “if your 30 or over you only get a year extension” policy our club seems to have and whether it should change if you’re a club legend.
As we all know both Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard’s contract is up in the summer making them available to join any club they wished for free and even able to agree terms in January. This obviously has angered most fans, as many believe they deserve what ever they want for the service they have given to this club and I not necessarily disagree with them. But when I write things I do like to try and look at things from the other side to raise talking points and just to give people another point of view instead of having tunnel vision which we all can be guilty of at times. The first thing is to ask whether we think either player is worthy of a new contract i.e. can they still play at this level. Although Lampard should not be first choice anymore he can be a massive asset to us in helping the youth players and what a sub to have if we need a goal. Ashley Cole on the other hand is still the most consistent player in our squad and arguable the best left back on the planet still so there is no question whether he can cut it or not at this level still.
Going by various reports together both players are rumoured to be earning around £260,000 a week before bonuses. So that’s 1.4 million every month before bonuses and a staggering 12.4 million a year again before bonuses. With FFP (financial fair play) in process now and the club paying off transfers yearly this could go towards paying them off or any other potential new signings in the future.
I believe as they are getting older they should take a pay cut as they are in a nice way being phased out of the team playing less of a key part than the past so maybe they do not want to take a pay cut? My argument would be why not take a year extension with a slightly reduced wage prove yourself in that year and earn yourself that second year you so badly want.
My view is that both will end up leaving SW6 in the summer with Frank going off to the MLS playing for LA Galaxy and for Cole it’s open. If Ancelotti is still PSG manager then that is an option but I suspect he still wants to stay in England and how much will it hurt seeing him play for another side in England. The only way I can see one or both of them staying is if the summer sees the re-arrival of the special one. I wouldn’t be surprised if both players sign a one year reduced waged deal if offered one quite simply because he is that special.
Thank you for reading and have a fantastic Christmas and New Year.
