The old cliche of not playing young players in struggling teams comes to mind, if AVB put in McEachran/Romeu/Piazon/Bertrand/Courtois/Davila in this team at the moment not only would it be a huge gamble but if they go out and get beat that's their confidence destroyed collectively unnecessarily.
You have to ease new players into a team, with experienced players, so that when they do lose a game they have advice and the comfort of knowing it wasn't them or their inexperience that lost the game. It's just not a risk worth taking this season, he gives youngsters the odd game to ease them in and take a look at them but he doesn't play them enough that they feel comfortable enough to be upset when they're on the bench.
It's the right approach in a transition to not throw every talented youngster into a struggling team, let's not forget why he's stuck with Malouda/Lampard etc he has no other options from what he has and he has exposed the Chelsea team to his system which clearly doesn't suite them.
I think if you compare the team at Everton to the one you'll see next season it will look a lot stronger in midfield/defence, Torres will still be there but he might actually play in a team that creates chances. Would not surprise me to see Chelsea make a couple of signings off the back of the European Championships, the usual breakthrough players bidding war I imagine.
