On today's game, ****** brilliant to see Torres looking to shoot at every possibility. He took more than double the number that Sturridge did and the cool finish for the goal was like watching him back to his best. He also picked up 2 key passes and although his completed pass rate was poor he was ambitious with the balls he was trying to play. If he keeps that aspect of his game and his deadly skill in front of goal continues to return, he might even end up better than before! (a man can dream)

Great game from Mata who was everywhere today and produced some really nice passes. I still think he needs to be seeing the ball a bit more but he was ruthless with what he was given today, and that shot he took was very nice, he just needed a little more luck.

Sturridge was very good and he seemed to control his flair a lot better than normal. Solid game for him and I hope he keeps this level of team work up.

Luiz made a great throughball again for Torres and you've got to wonder just how many goals that Brazil side are going to be with him, Silva, Marcelo and Alves as a backline.

RDM/next manager(s) must do with Lampard what SAF did with Paul Scholes. The only way I see it.

Torres was immense once again. Thank lord Sturridge decided to pass it.

IF Lampard is willing to play less and adapt his game. I honestly think he should go the MLS at the end of the season, earn a crapton of money, be a massive star, enjoy the sun with his lovely wife and be able to play at a high level for 5 more years. The only thing would be his kids I guess.

Interesting. Can't say I saw much of the game past the MOTD highlights since I was out watching Palace get mauled, but Torres looks like he's had a cracker. Perhaps now he can get a run of form going.

A cautionary word, though: he was up against a makeshift defence with, more importantly, a totally unequipped midfield in front of it. Stephen Ireland's industrious, but a ballwinner he is not, and Chris Herd had a bad game. Add to that a numerical advantage, and Torres likely had acres of space to receive the ball and run at the inexperienced Baker and Lichaj. It speaks volumes of how cobbled together the Villa team was that the bench consisted of Guzan, Heskey, Albrighton... and Jack Grealish, Samir Carruthers and Derrick Williams.

That said, going by figures it was a great game for the front two of Mata and Torres. Whilst Mata did have more or less the run of a midfield wholly unable to cope with him, you can only beat what's in front of you. Torres' stats are even better: 5 shots, 3 on target, 2 key passes. What particularly catches the eye is his willingness to shoot, something he was hesitant to do during the run in which he was shocking. He still has the finishing ability, that is undeniable, but half of the skill of finishing is the mindset to do it, and he seems to be working himself back into that. Lampard, though... well, I can't say I saw much of him from the highlights, and the stats seem to reflect that. I'm not sure he has the selfless and mature mentality to change his game as he ages in the way that truly great players like Maldini, Scholes, Giggs, Nedved and so on did and are. If he doesn't, then it's definitely time to bite the bullet and put him out to pasture. Experience is invaluable, yes, but if he can't perform then that will have to be sacrificed for the greater good of Chelsea.

Personally, I'm happy Torres is nearly back to his usual self, and playing with a smile now. He's such a gifted footballer, it was at times depressing as a neutral, to see him suffering badly.

When it comes to Lampard though, I'm still undecided. I love the guy as a footballer, and have loved watching him play....but I don't know if it's my heart ruling my head by figuring out wether he should leave Chelsea or not. Maybe it's blinkering my view to his performances. When you see his goal tally, it's obvious he still offers something. But still..... Maybe it's because I've become used to excellent peformances from players like Lampard, et all from his era that's blinkering my view. Maybe I don't want to see him retire, as he has been a great footballer.

One would assume that for the past year he's had a sizable bet with someone that he wouldn't get into double figures, then.

Like Carroll? Or am I just being biased and cynical....

Money envy is a terrible thing. ;)

Well, judging by our current position in the table (now that we're above Liverpool and in the FA Cup Semis), and not to mention we've been ravaged by injuries and spent next to nothing, and going by recent performances.....that ain't a problem ;)

(yeah I'm being smug about it)

Not sure either. But he can be quite valuable if he is willing to change his position as Scholes did (from AMC to Deep-lying playmaker, I think that transformation was one of the best decisions SAF has ever made) then he better stay. But if he is not, they he better go to MLS like Subtle said.

David Luiz on Twitter - I cut my hair today!

He is a huge prankster and it is the 1st April, i so hope he is playing a joke.

There's a difference. Scholes is arguably the greatest ever Premier League central midfielder, and even when he was at his peak as an attacking midfielder he possessed the kind of mental discipline, awareness and vision Lampard simply doesn't, and never will possess. On top of that, he's a far superior passer to Lampard, who is as someone has already stated in this thread more a striker from midfield than a Scholes-esque creative fulcrum. If I'm honest, I'm almost certain he'd never be able to change like Scholes did, for those reasons and for the reason that he'd simply sulk if asked to play anywhere apart from his favoured position at the tip of the midfield triangle.

Yeah, probably. I do want him to stay though, because he is an experienced player and could help us in a lot of situations, but his position will be taken by someone in the near future, although Mata is great when he plays there, but still, if it wasnt Mata it would be someone else. So he should probably go after his contract ends.

and yes, as much as I hate Scholes, he is the best midfielder ever played in UK.

Just to mention that Torres also grabbed two assists vs Villa
