Why is the comparison wrong? You can't FORCE someone to lose their talent if they're not passionate about football. IIRC Assou-Ekotto said that he doesn't like football, he's just good at it and wants to get paid. Just like myself and plenty of other people at uni are studying Physics because we can do it, and in terms of opportunities for high paying jobs afterwards it is one of the best, and after coming from nothing, we'd like to better ourselves for the future. We like the subject, but very few of us have the passion to actually pursue a career as a Physicist afterwards. Are we part of the problem with society too?

I personally would prefer to to do something I was passionate about and earn less money, than do a job that I'm capable of and earn more but have no interest in it. I agree with steve when he says "My cause for concern is that society and footballers as a whole seem to think more about their wallets nowadays than actually doing what there passionate about. "

And I believe in playing to your strengths and talents. I love music, but just loving it and being passionate about it isn't going to give me the ability to write songs like Bob Dylan. So I'll do what I'm good at. Passion isn't a substitute for talent, if you're talented at doing what you're passionate about, awesome, good for you. For an awful lot of people that isn't the case. The problem only gets exaggerated for footballers who have about a 10 year window to maximise their earnings from their talent before it becomes relatively useless, and when a lot of them have forfeited any education in their early years to pursue football.

Quote from a pretty good source on the whole Malouda issue:

Before the Euro's, like Kalou and Bosingwa, he was told he wasn't going to get another contract and he'll be aloud to look for another club, which he was apparently disappointed on as he wanted to finish his career at Chelsea. He got 4 offers during the summer, 1 from Brazil, 2 from France (Lyon return and Marseille) and Sporting Lisbon. Apparently, the contract offer to him was 60% less than what he was on per week at Chelsea....now thats quite a big drop to what he is on at Chelsea (reported 90k a week).

Because of his charitable commitments, he obviously didn't want to take those offers and decided to stay at Chelsea for the final year because he'll get that money. Was only 5 days ago that he wouldn't get near the first team ever again because he didn't go so he has been told to train with the reserves.

The club apparently specifically told him that he won't get near the team again so that was his only choice. Not, his poor ambition not to try and get back in the side, he wanted to finish his career here, but literally being forced out by the sounds of it. The club were going to let him go for free that wanted him gone that badly. But, Malouda has been on record so many times in previous years about how he wanted to finish his career with us.

That's pretty bullshit. If you want to finish your career with the club (by seeing out the contract the club gave you) then nothing wrong with that at all, all to save a few quid on wages and force out a player who's been there and done that with the club.

Disappointing that it has not risen... Samsung had a option to extend the deal for three more years at the same price which is massive short-sightedness on the part of the Chelsea corporate staff

At a time when the club's profile has never been higher... I thought we could command deals that was at least much closer to what Man Utd/Liverpool/Sunderland are getting

I saw the scoreline and expected some amazing play. Think the build up for the 1st Neymar goal and the finish from Ramires were the only bits worth watching. That Chinese defence was dire.

Looks like Juan Mata will not be playing tommorow as he has not trained all week due to being off on holiday...

Wonder who will replace him. I would go for either Moses or Oscar

Last season's game at Loftus road i think hit Mata quite hard in terms of not expecting that hostile crowed really close to him. Was listening to a podcast earlier and someone who was there said after he took one corner he looked scared to take anymore and kept calling Lamps over to take them. Do think he will be used to that now but it's great that he got over a 2 week break, if he's last season form returns then watch out defences. Will be good to see Moses start but i do think it may be Oscar and Moses used as an impact sub.

Should have been at least a month out for Mata. Disappointed. 2 weeks is not enough I'm afraid.

If he plays Wednesday night then it will be 19 days rest for him, that's pretty hefty.

@Crofty23: What should I throw at John terry tomoz? Any ideas welcome #themanisscum #qpr #QPRTwitFam

@reema80: Try one of your many empty seats?
