If Willian signs I think it could signal the end of Matas time at Chelsea :( If I could keep only one player from our whole squad it would be Juan will be gutted if he goes.

So whatever that 3rd bid is for Rooney, make sure it includes Mata, yeah?

If Willian is in, someone major must be out...its the only explanation.

Selling mata would be utter madness, I would be really surprised if you let him go.

I might just stop watching them this season. This is ridic.

A tad OTT don't you think mate? Yes Mata is sensational but he is just 1 player.

As much as i do not what Mata to leave i can see reasons for why Jose may not want him and may fancy Willian over him. Willian is very hard working and far more versatile than Mata, 2 traits Jose absolutely loves.

How is it OTT if they sell him to United? What are we Arsenal 2 now? Mata can win them the title they way Persie did. And having Mata AND Persie in a team -- it's just too much.

Manchester United have made an informal inquiry to Chelsea about the possibility of bringing Juan Mata to Old Trafford this transfer window, sources from both clubs have told ESPN.

It is unknown at this point whether the contact has been part of the ongoing Wayne Rooney saga, or whether the English champions would be open to a long-mooted straight swap between the players, just that their interest has been piqued and they believe a deal could be possible.

Word from Chelsea throughout the summer has been that Mata is simply not for sale, and he is understood to be one of owner Roman Abramovich's three favourite players at Stamford Bridge.

An undercurrent of the summer, however, has been that manager Jose Mourinho is not as keen on the Spanish playmaker. Although the Portuguese boss is fully prepared to use him as one of the primary attacking players in his first-choice XI, Mourinho is said to think that off-loading Mata may not be the worst decision if it ensured strengthening elsewhere - especially up front.

Chelsea’s reported interest in Anzhi Makhachkala's Willian has only added to the uncertainty.

It is also understood that Romelu Lukaku had been broached as a potential makeweight in any deal for Rooney, but his exit from Chelsea seems exceptionally unlikely. Similarly, United's stance remains the same: Rooney is not for sale.

The Old Trafford club remain relaxed about eventually bringing in Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines from Everton before the end of window, but their pursuit of Luka Modric has stalled. Carlo Ancelotti sees the midfielder as a key player for Real Madrid this season, with that only accentuated by Xabi Alonso's metatarsal injury.

A Rooney-Mata Transfer would leave me so conflicted. We'd have Kagawa - Mata - Welbeck behind RVP/Hernandez. But then Jose would have Rooney. It's all too much!

Rooney-Mata swap would leave me super conflicted too ... I pray that Jose knows what he is doing

If Rooney coming in means mata goes the other way I say leave Wayne in Manchester.

To be fair, it is about the system rather than one player. If Jose gets the best out of Rooney, we will be a much better team despite the loss of Mata

But so will United. It's an interesting one.

Then I suppose the question is ... Do United need a world-class playmaking no.10 more or do we need a world-class striker more? Honestly I would rather we keep Mata and let Lukaku lead the line rather than get Rooney at this stage

That would be terrible.... sorry.... I only like Kagawa when he plays behind the striker like he did at Dortmund. Mata also plays there as well, I know he can play out wide but both of them are nowhere near as effective and in my opinion it would mess our natural formation up. United has always been based around wingers and why would you want to lose that just for Mata? No sorry it would be a non-sense move. We have Kagawa, we should stick with him where he plays best behind the striker and play with wingers as well.

Disagree completely... Mata is a great player.... but why would we want him, we have Kagawa? It would basically be like waving him good bye. Like I mentioned above, I know they can play out wide.. but they both are no where near as effective and it's not the position where you will get the best from them.

Mata coming in with Kagawa already in the squad would be senseless in my view. United plays with wingers, you'd lose that trying to accommodate both of them in the side.

Mata played out wide for us a lot under AVB and was very effective. The fact that Jose wants him to play in a similar position this season only reinforces that.

I would hate this transfer to go through though: Mata is by far my favourite player and I really don't want to give United someone that potent.

I also have to say that it sounds like grade A bullshit. All the facts that we have point to it being a stupid deal. From Jose's comments on wanting an inverted winger (Willian is good with both his feet but unless I am mistaken he is stronger on his right foot and primarily plays on the left on in the middle), to the fact that Willian's agent is Kia Joorabchian (who of course would never, ever exploit a lingering interest Chelsea had in his client to squeeze Spurs for every penny) to the very idea of selling our best player of the last 2 years to our direct rival, none of it adds up.

This hotbed of speculation also seems to have arisen at the same point that all the papers wind up their THE BEGINNING OF THE END OF THE TRANSFER WINDOW GET HYPED specials and when there's very little else to talk about. If we really wanted to swap Mata for Rooney and get Willian in as a replacement, why have we waited until now? United have supposedly been interested in Mata for weeks, we have been after Rooney for longer and we've close connections with Willian for even longer. The only way it would make sense is if Moyes woke up this morning and suddenly decide that yeah, **** it, Jose can have Rooney.

United play with wingers, it's how they have always been successful. Kagawa behind the striker is where he is best so Mata would only be able to play out wide somewhere. To lose Rooney and get this benefit of Mata to our team would be a bad mistake. I know Mata offers something different out wide, but United play best with solid wingers who offer great width.

Because there is no chance of a deal for Rooney before we play Chelsea on Monday, after that however, could be a different story.
