Everything is a lot easier when you play for Barcelona... Dani Alves is a good player and would be a good signing but turning out for United rather than Barcelona will likely make his flaws a lot more obvious

Except it was exactly the same at Sevilla...

Not exactly. To play for big club you need to have that mentality. Many players who shine for smaller clubs fail at bigger clubs. Also defending looks easier when playing for Barca and I agree with it to an extent but Dani Alves would have dealt with wingers 1 on 1 more times than say Clyne because Southampton plays defensive game where he gets protected by his DMs and wingers. On the other hand Barca commit all players forward so Dani Alves will be dealing with wingers 1 on 1.

Also it's not fair to compare but I would take players who played amazingly at biggest club as you can bank on them to play at highest level.

Like you mentioned, that was a while ago so there will be perhaps questions over his longevity

I agree that Dani Alves is one of the better players around and I wouldn't be surprised if he joined a club like United and was fantastic... I just have doubts that he can do what he does at a club that isn't as dominant as Barcelona

Its simple, if you expect your full back to be attacking and provide width and he will get caught out positionally. Not his mistake but it happens. It happened with Evra, he used to provide width and make forward runs but when the team loses the ball he was in the final third and it's physically not possible to sprint up and down the field all game.

It depends on what coach wants from his fullback.

Mike Marsh leaving, others expected to leave the coaching staff with rumours an ex-player could be joining (whispers of Zenden or Hyypia)

Also the signing of Milner suggests a completely different transfer approach which is refreshing. Still uncertainty over who is actually in control over transfers but positive signs at least

Yes, I agree... A silly as it sounds, a defensively minded full-back is becoming rarer each year

He was in tears by all accounts bless him. Same as when Souness made the ridiculously stupid move of letting him, David Burrows and a million to West Ham for lard *** Julian Dicks way back when. That was an interestingly revealing chance conversation with Grobbelaar the carpark the day after, after a loss at Goodison.

Hyypia wold be a welcome return. Rafa should never of let him go and he should of seen his playing career out at Anfield as he wanted. One of the smartest moves Rodgers would of made thus far to bring him back to sort the defence out.

???

At what point was Suarez desperate to leave but the club refused to let him go because of his price? Maybe I'm wrong but wasn't it the other way around when Arsenal came in for him: the club wanted him to go for PR reasons but Suarez was fairly ambivalent?

No it was Liverpool that wanted him to stay but he was pushing for a move. There was that magazine interview and he was also live on some Uruguayan radio show or something where he spoke about the move and how he wanted it to happen.

Honestly can not think of the last full back we've had that could defend first and foremost beyond Flanno.

Probably going back to Stevie Finnan. and Arbeloa. Before that Robbie Jones. THAT'S how badly the position has been neglected on both sides.

This modern day shift to full backs that can attack first and foremost has contributed to the woeful overall standard of defending in England right across the board. Give me a defender that can defend, what should be his primary role, first and foremost ANY day of the week over an athletic player that can bomb up and down, contributing more in an attacking sense. Phil Neal redefined the attacking full back role. But he never lost sight of his primary role being to defend. If you then can find a Neal-esq one like Clyne who can defend properly and contribute in attack you have the perfect fullback.

A lots changed as the games progressed and a lot not for the better.

Little aside, but this makes reading Utd fans wanting Alves all the more amusing to me. They have a woeful set of centre halves, are on the verge of losing the main contributor to getting them in the Champions League in nets; and many are wanting Alves who is attack minded first and pretty darn suspect defensively however folk like to make out he isn't brought into the mix.

One can only hope Van Gaal is as foolish to be thinking the same.
Robbie jones, what a fullback. bit before my time but my dad always tells me if it wasnt for the injuries gary neville would not have got more than 10 caps.

Bogdan is a nothing signing in all honesty.. Low wages, free transfer and a better back-up than Brad Jones

Nothing special but gives us the chance to spend money in areas we really need

Your dad is a very wise man. Which is saying something as Neville was as solid as they come when it came to old fashioned full back play.

Absolute travesty what happened there with injuries. Would of been our and England's right back right through were it not for injuries. Ryan Giggs always says he's the hardest opponent he ever faced. Never forget his debut. Signed him as a fresh faced 18 year old from Crewe on the Friday and on the Sunday he bottled Giggs completely up in his debut, on live TV, at Utd. From 4th division fresh faced kid to putting Giggs in his back pocket in the biggest game in England in 48 hours. WOW!

Top, top class player who was equally good when Evans signed McAteer, went to his wing backs, and kicked Robbie over the left hand side. Brilliant defensively. Quick. Strong. Positionally intelligent and a great contributor going forward.

Loved him.

It seems quite obvious the budget isn't huge (which we already knew), so the upturn in form of Mignolet has made it less of a priority position

Home-grown, low wages, free transfer, no real risk and allows us to spend money in other areas or spend big on a priority position like a ST

I'd completely argue against that.

The back end of the season he slipped back into what he is. Or at least should be. A reliable back-up 'keeper. That 3/4 month spell between Christmas and March/ April has been a complete anomaly to the rest of his career. Credit to him for the turnaround through that spell but as soon as the season went to ****, he went with it. Going into another season with him as your #1 puts you at an immediate disadvantage.

By common consensus by most everyone I know who I've been going the match with the last 33 years, he's the single worst long term goalkeeper we've ever had the displeasure of watching in a red shirt.

May as well of extended Jones as Bogdan won't be putting any pressure on Mingolet at all. ****, he wasn't even Bolton's first choice last year.

Not making a reliable, quality goalkeeper a priority for the second straight year is to everyones detriment at Anfield.

Bogdan is a low-risk, terrible signing. We'll never learn. We're just ******* stupid.

It's an absolutely nothing signing that enables us to focus on other positions... Fans will never be happy

He got better and although i completely agree we need a new goalkeeper, it is quite a bit down the priority list so better to focus other positions with the limited money we have

A new first choice GK who is an improvement would easily cost us £10mil +
