And 12 odd million in current market cheap price for homegrown player.

Thing is United don't lack homegrown players whatsoever, so that probably didn't make a difference to our thinking.

there was interest but it never went any further then that.

An awful lot of Liverpool fans have convinced themselves that He 'snubbed' United.
He's a good player and if United had put in a bid and taken Him to Old Trafford, I'd have trusted their infinitely better wisdom and supported it.
They didn't put a bid in... So I trust that decision will be the right one once the season kicks off.

For the long term yes, but Valencia does a decent job.

After thinking about it for a while it's probably because we don't need another young-ish fullback, we've already got them with the likes of Rafael and Varela. (Though surprisingly Janko has just left, expected him to have a chance).

Probably after someone with more experience I imagine.

He has certainly improved.. I just think a home-grown player and long term RB make sense for £12mil but I'm glad they didn't think the same haha!

Exactly

Im surprised they didn't.. Despite an improvement from Valencia, Clyne is an upgrade

This is what I said when we were linked with Clyne. So nothing to do with him signing for Liverpool

Valencia offers lot to the attacking game, attack is more than just playing beautiful crosses or making assists. He is a fantastic outlet on the right side and no player carries the ball forward like he does at ManUtd. I think it was Carrick who said it's easy with Valencia in the team because he carries the ball 40-50 yards forward and gives team some breathing space.

Clyne's defensive game is not great too, he is rash and caught up many times, he has recovery pace though which bails him out. He is a good FB playing in a team with excellent defensive cover. I don't see any one attribute that makes him stand out. If Rafael is fit then he is miles better too which is shame as he is never fit.

All managers wants their full back to attack and provide the width, Van Gaal is no different. We have Shaw on the left side who is defensively very good but attacking is bit meh. Don't need 2 full backs with similar profile.

With Clyne and Shaw we might have the leagues most impotent attacking full backs. I don't see what Clyne adds to the team that Valencia can't.

I will post the comparison chart later where Valencia wins in every single stat.

If you are not happy with Valencia's lack of drive and taking full back on then don't bother watching Clyne at all.

18 Million for a 25 year old RB who is on last year contract is a very bad deal IMO. Also he is not great either to pay over the odds, just average who is protected well by 2 excellent DMs.

His attacking game is very underwhelming, defensively he is not great either. Positionally very suspect but has nice recovery pace.

Tbh I don't trust Duncan Castles at all. He spouts so much nonsense all the time. Would be great if we can sign Gundogan.

On Clyne, he is a decent player but if we aiming for big then we need big players. I rate Coleman much higher even though Clyne had better season, also Darmian is very good full back.

I dont get the 'He snubbed United to sign for Liverpool' mentality.

I'm happy because we signed a good player in a position we needed. I couldn't care less who we beat to the transfer unless it was a world class player that would have seriously strengthened a rival

Nowadays, the majority of players would choose United over Liverpool, that's just a fact

The opinion on Clyne from United fans is certainly mixed... As you mentioned Coleman or Darmian would be very good signings but Im still not sold on Valencia

I agree. Opinions are very divided on him but nonetheless good signing for Liverpool.

Yes, it's certainly a better signing for Liverpool than it would have been for United

Yeah, with Jonhson leaving and Flanagan injured for almost 2 years you desperately needed RB. Also if Liverpool plays with 3 CB system then Clyne would be wasted, he is not a wingback.

I agree he is better in a four, but even as a wing-back he would be an improvement. I mean at the end of the season we had Can playing RWB!

I thought Ibe played few times and he looked good. Still wasted playing in defense though. Players like Kolarov, Evra, even Jonhson would make a good wingback but some players are more suited to Full back role. When we played 3 CB system, Shaw was poor offensively but when we switched to 4 man defense, Shaw improved offensively with his overlapping runs. Clyne is not good attacker to make significant impact as a wingback IMO. Still young for a fullback and plenty of time to improve though

Yes I agree... There is a lot of love for Ibe at the club, and even in an unfamiliar position he looked one of our better players in that role

I reckon there's 4 other players that have played for Liverpool who were World Champions.

Cookies for anyone that names them all.

One off the top of my head would be roger hunt after that I'm clutching xabi alonso?

Edit and maybe reina was backup keeper Spain in that World Cup?

Well now shoot again. Torres. ANOTHER Spaniard. *Shaking my head laughing.

Xabi and Arbeloa had left by 2010.

And how did I neglect Gerry Byrne?

So we reckon 7. (DEFO 7. lol.) .

Byrne, Cally and Sir Roger in '66.

Riedle in '90.

Diomede in '98.

And Reina and Torres in 2010.
