Obviously a move for Pedro would be highly unlikely given the competition, but being available for 21.1mil I am surprised we have not been interested (either now or in the past)

If we are spending that amount on the likes of Lallana and Markovic it's a surprise we've not tried for Pedro.

Considering both Manchester clubs and Chelsea were interested in Pedro, Liverpool would have been wasting their time trying to get him imo. Better to focus on other targets

Never stopped Firmino and Clyne. (Even the narrative is now completely different from the other end of the East Lancs.).

Hah good one. Hoffenheim confirmed only one club from England contacted them, and United went after Darmian in April.

Only Rawk are still clinging to that.

If you think Pedro's was low.... Lars Benders is only 10.6 mil according to BILD.

How the **** has no one activated that.

Hoffenheim and his agent confirmed there were more than ourselves heavily interested. And more from here.

I don't know how serious Clyne was (except you got linked all last year heavily); but there was a lot in the Brazilian. Coutinho swung that one.

Of course his agent did, that's what an agent does drive interest to drive the best price. Only Liverpool contacted the club regardless.

Clyne went dead two weeks after they contacted Torino.

But if you want to swing that as beating a club, then more power to you, you beat United and City to a player neither contacted the club for.

Both Hoffenheim and the agent said there were more than ourselves and more from here after the transfer. And a reliable contact has Coutinho as the deciding factor from another English club we shall refrain from naming. Believe who you want or not. Your prerogative.

That transfers done so its a dead issue regardless.

Who do you guys reckon is better? Clyne or Darmian?

I'd say Clyne but that Darmian fella looks the real deal too.

And what does everyone think to our chances this season, realistically?

I've got a sneaky feeling fourth is possible again...

Darmian. I rate him as good as any RB in the World. And equally as good at centre back. Loved him for a few years now and sadly told those in the other thread that they needed him far more than Alves when they all fawned over the Brazilian back at the start of the window.

That said, Clyne is a fantastic FB in his own right and I'm MORE than happy with him.

The man, the myth, the living LEG-END Joe freaking Gomez! is on another planet altogether naturally so we won't include him in this. :P

As for the season ..... I'm still expecting an implosion and was big a cluster**** as last year. But that said, we are equally as talented as anyone not named Chelsea or Manchester City and if we carry on with this new defensive solidity and add the attacking quickness that Rodgers preaches anything is possible so long as he doesn't start meddling with things again.

Expecting a win Monday and confidence should then be soaring.

I have a really strange feeling bout Monday. Think Benteke could do one over on Kosc and I think people are finally seeing that Coquelin is no good, think he will struggle against Cout if he plays!

I still stand by United being the weakest of the top four as well... Potential loss of De Gea and no depth in attack and in my opinion they still have a soft central defence. I think a lot depends on what happens in the transfer market

I do think it will be 4th or 5th for us but realistically I think it will be 5th

You lads are a lot more confident than I am... I never have a good feeling against Arsenal away but a win would set us up fantastically

Coq is a decent player but he stood out last season simply because Arsenal have nobody like him in the squad so of course he was the best ball winning midfielder. I am just glad Wenger is adamant he doesn't need more players because if his attitude changed they would have been challenging for the league years ago

Think this sums it up, at this stage, the top four are still making signings, just look at Chelsea and City.

We'll only really know the reality of who's weakest once the window has closed. At the moment I'd agree United are probably weakest out of the top 4 you're trying to gazump.

One thing that you know about Van Gaal though is that we'll always be hard to beat under him, conceded least amount of goals out of anyone since last November. Even with the defensive options that we have, which aren't anywhere near the quality of what you'd expect United of old. But even then the realisation is that Smalling is a better defender than virtually everyone gives him credit for. Same can be said for Jones and Blind, not stellar players, but better than what most people would have you think.

Think Arsenal have the edge over United in attacking areas but even though, they arguably have better defenders, would say they are weaker than United in that area. Wenger and all.

Been impressed with his start to the season. The added security of having Darmian's defensive nounce back there knowing he's got his back seem's to really be allowing him to flourish.

Fair, impartial summing up of things too man.

Jon Walters approached Brendan Rodgers after the Stoke game & told him Liverpool had picked up a “good one” in Joe Gomez. #lfc (Paul Joyce)

But there is a (pleasant) surprise here ....

Liverpool have unexpectedly offered Mamadou Sakho a new five-year contract (The Times)

Tony Barrett suggested the Sakho situation could simply be the old 'prove your worth to the team' tactic to get the best out of a player. He said Sakho has had fitness issues since the end of last season so that could also contribute

I for one hope this is true because he is our best defender when played regularly

Agreed, and I hope that's all that it is. Hope the contract offer is true as well.

People who say "well Sakho played in the 6-1 loss to Stoke" fail to realise he was unfit and was rushed back for that game due to Lovren's woeful performance in the previous fixture.

I do feel that having more stable options than Moreno and Skrtel either side would help Lovren perform on a more consistent basis, and we've seen that with Gomez on the left, but I think Sakho would still be the better choice. He's first choice for France, for crying out loud! Absolute beast of a player!

gotta say im a big fan of sakho dont get why he gets alot of hatred top defender very underrated and im saying this even as a man utd fan
