If I'm not mistaken, Hummels was originally a midfielder (defensive midfielder?), who Klopp retrained to be a centreback. How will people react if he does the same with Can? Is it ok if Klopp does it, but not Rodgers?

Thought he'd always been a centre half right through? But regardless, no it wouldn't be ok. We've had MORE than enough of stubborn morons playing players out of position to vainly try prove how smart a coach they are. (Never were.).

What in the World makes you think he'd do that?

I thought the situation was that he felt he was a CB, but Bayern thought he was more suited to DM and wanted him to play there. Klopp gave him a chance in his preferred position, and he blossomed. Maybe the reverse will happen with Can - forced to play CB when he prefers midfield

It's not that I think he'll do it, but the fact that he's done it in the past (if that information is correct of course) could suggest he'll do it again. If he was to do it, I imagine the reasoning would be the same: To drop Hummels (in this case Can) deeper to begin attacks.

That could be true, I'm honestly not sure about the circumstances involving his change in position. I'm trying to find sources on it, but it'd probably be easier if I spoke German.

Here we go:

At the start of his career, he still played up front and scored goal after goal. But Hermann [Gerland] and the manager responsible for him recognised early on that his defensive qualities were even greater. Bit by bit, they retrained Mats to become a flexible defender.

That's from bvb.de. So it looks like he was retrained quite early, long before he came to Dortmund.

Well, related, I'm encouraged listening to him on players positions. He doesn't seem like the sort to unduly try bash square pegs into round holes. And his last season at Dortmund stands out where he changed and adapted his system of the previous 6 seasons to fit the personnel he had after more sales into what was best for the team and the personnel at his disposal.

That's the sign of a top coach to me. You may have your preferred system in mind, but if you don't have the pieces, you adapt the system to fit what you currently have until you can get better. We've just come off a stubborn *** who tried to shoehorn players into his system regardless of what they couldn't bring to the table to fit it. Klopp appears the complete opposite of that.

And that enthusiasm man. How could you NOT want to play for that? He's the type that could get that extra 10% when everyones dead on their feet.

The more and more you think about this EVERYTHING just fits.

Perfect coach for the perfect club at the perfect time.

There's nothing wrong at all with trying people in different positions. Managers do it all the time. I remember watching young Pirlo, decades ago, during Italy under-21 game vs. Poland, where he actually played as sort of striker. I **** you not. It only took the cleverness of Ancelotti, many years later, to move Pirlo into deep midfield.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't work. Can doesn't work so far. Its only the people known for clever footballing brain, that are really able to reinvent themselves into different positions. Gerrard could play basically anywhere when he was young and he was always excellent.

I agree that Can hasn't worked as a CB, but I think he could work as a DM. He has great physique, not too different from Matic. He can tackle, pass the ball, decent in the air. He even has good pace, although his acceleration isn't the best. The only thing I'm unsure of is his anticipation and ability to read the play from a defensive point of view. That's often where he's failed as a centreback. But I'd love to see him try.

Nah he's just an arsehole in general. His hypocritical "Man City are ruining the transfer market buhu" along with his endless "the fault lies somewhere but not with me" speeches don't help.

Yeah, because Klopp is like young Mourinho, while actual Mourinho isn't like young Mourinho anymore, he is becoming more like young SAF.
