Jones,Evans and Smalling arnt good enough for more than 1 reason. The biggest reason they all have in common. They have injury proness 20.

No one is seriously arguing that you couldn't get hold of better centrebacks than Jones and Smalling, right? Admittedly those players won't be good enough in the long run, and the former still has the potential to become a great defender, but you needed a stopgap this year. You could have bought good, solid players at a relatively high cost and helped to ensure top 4 again. You'd most likely be dropping them to squad players within a year or two, but it doesn't matter because what's vital is getting CL football so you can attract premium players again. It's an expensive option but let's not pretend it didn't exist and United weren't in a position to try it.
But valid. You dont think our scouts are not looking? We had a scout at the Marseille game looking a couple of defenders.

TV was pretty realistic, but you knew that plan was going south with plenty of time to spare. You knew you would be left with Smalling, Evans and Jones as your centrebacks and it looks like you decided to wing it. Surely that's a serious error in judgement?
Don't get me wrong, I don't think you guys are really in that much trouble. You played well today, and you could easily make top 4. The thing is though, when this season started so many people were denying that the club had made any mistakes in the transfer window and the flaws in that line of thinking are being pretty brutally exposed. The slip ups are understandable but they still happened.
