The Manchester United Thread

Can't judge a game off highlights it's true but that looked about as convincing a display as you've had all year today.

Nah, we've played better than that this season. We were about 7/10, max. But we didn't need to be more than that. Highlights won't show you just how bad Everton were. We were jogging along with 10 men for the most part based on Rooneys game and we were comfortable. God knows how bad it could have been had we actually turned up. They were horrifically bad

Very good performance, can't complain on anything.

Last time we lost 2-1 before International break then won 3-1 vs Liverpool, this time 3-0 vs Everton.

This IMO is our best team (without Shaw). Herrera, Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin should start every game as our midfield 3. Very good work rate and balanced midfield.

Martial was equally good as winger and it was great to see a winger taking on full back and beating him with such ease.

Smalling and Jones play well together and they should be given time to grow as a pair (hopefully Jones stay fit). Rojo did well as LB.

Overall very good performance against very tough opponent especially away from home where we have dreadful record in last 4-5 years.

Had an inkling when he asked for the No.7 shirt and the way he roams about in public looking like a buffoon. Apparently he also got told off by Giggs recently for his lifestyle. Has done zilch so far this season. But talent is undeniably there ... Let's see what happens

Zlich? He is the reason why ManUtd are in CL and not in Europa. He won the first leg playing like a star.

Yes he won the 1st leg against the mighty Club Brugge who are ripping up the Belgian Pro League at 6th position. Superstar

That has nothing to do with my point.

We were losing 1-0 against Brugge and had we lost we would have been in Europa. Depay stepped up and scored 2 goals and assisted 3rd, it was game over in the first leg.

What Lukaku did when he was 16 is irrelevant here. We are talking about Depay' contribution and he stepped up for our biggest game this season.

It's unfair to say that Memphis has done zilch. He has scored goals and played well on occasions. That isn't exactly nothing.

Exactly. He is not up to the expectations but saying he has done zilch or using him choosing #7 shirt to have a go at him is pretty embarrassing.

It's also false that he's been criticised for his lifestyle by Giggs.

People see his tattoos and bling and call him a buffoon, shows they know nothing about him, because he takes his football very seriously. And works incredibly hard. He needs to improve his decision making though.

Exclusive: Juan Mata returns fire at his former manager, José Mourinho, after the midfielder was sold amid criticism of his workrate
Even the Premier League’s perfect son-in-law has his limits. At a visit to a Special Olympics project in Madrid, where he has charmed children, staff and fellow visitors alike, Juan Mata’s good humour momentarily slips when asked how he feels about being perceived as a luxury item, a description originating from the deeds and words of José Mourinho. “If a luxury player is a player who scores and assists and has good stats, then I’m happy to be a luxury player,” Mata says pointedly.
Mata has the numbers on his side, which is surprising given that he was the first big-name player to be ditched on his return to Chelsea by Mourinho, a manager whose statistical analysis is always empirically exhaustive.
The Spain midfielder was followed out of Stamford Bridge by Kevin de Bruyne, David Luiz, Fernando Torres, André Schürrle and Juan Cuadrado, but as Chelsea fans contemplate how Mourinho can turn their season round, it is Mata they would most like to see back at the club where he won the player-of-the-year award in his final two seasons.
Much of Mata’s appeal stems from the stylish way he plays and his humble persona, yet he delivers on a consistent basis. No Premier League midfielder has produced a higher number of goals and assists than his tally of 74 over the past five seasons, while despite United’s inconsistency he has actually become more productive since moving to Old Trafford in January last year.
The 27-year-old has been directly involved in 45 per cent of the 25 goals United have scored this season, while he has already matched his haul of 18 Barclays Premier League goals for Chelsea in 26 fewer matches.
“I’ve scored as many goals for Manchester United in the Premier League as for Chelsea, but in something like 30 games less,” Mata says. “In terms of scoring and assisting I’m quite happy with the stats, and stats don’t lie. They are facts.
“I want luxury players in my team. I like creative players, and players who do different things. It’s easy to say certain players are luxuries, especially when you’ve lost a game. When you lose, a certain kind of player — the creative players — always get the blame.”
Mata is reluctant to address the Mourinho issue any further, but his description of the circumstances behind his departure from Chelsea is instructive. Having picked Chelsea’s reigning player of the year with increasing infrequency on his return to the club in the summer of 2013, Mourinho abruptly sold him without explanation the January after, letting it be known that he felt Mata lacked the pace and workrate required by his teams.
De Bruyne was also transferred in the same month without speaking to Mourinho as Oscar emerged as his preferred No 10, a decision that looks ever more questionable given that the Brazilian is struggling in west London while his former team-mates are thriving in Manchester.
“I’ve not tried to prove anyone wrong,” Mata says, although his defiant tone speaks for itself. “I didn’t speak with Mourinho like he has spoken with you, for example. I never had any explanations and didn’t ask for them. But what is past is past. I will always be very grateful to Chelsea for everything they did for me, but I had a chance to join a great club and am enjoying it here.
“I’ve got a good record with goals and assists and hopefully we can reach a point where we win trophies, which is what I did at Chelsea.”
Louis van Gaal is hardly a soft touch, but the apparent contrast with Mourinho in his methods and man management is striking. Mata eulogises about the Dutchman’s openness and honesty, whether it be screaming in players’ faces as he did at half-time of United’s Barclays Premier League defeat by Arsenal a fortnight ago, or praising them in front of their peers. Mata has had more praise than most this season, although he has also shown an adaptability many felt he lacked, moving from his preferred position as a No 10 to a new role on the right, where he has remained as effective.

“Van Gaal is how you see him in the press conferences, he’s like that with us too,” Mata says. “He’s honest and straightforward. If you do a bad thing he will scream at you, but if you do a good thing he will hug you and kiss you. He’s that kind of person, and he’s doing that kind of thing all the time on the training ground. He’s honest and he shows his feelings to everyone. He believes in his style of training and way of preparing for games. He’s won trophies everywhere he’s been, and hopefully this season now we know him better we’ll win something too.
“He was screaming at us at half-time at Arsenal, as he always says what he thinks. I really value his honesty. It’s important to be a good manager, but it’s even more important to be a good person. When someone does something in training that he really likes, he goes over to hug and kiss them — he really does it. Or he says in front of everyone, ‘You are the best in training, I’m really proud of how you played,’ to set a good example to the others. He can be quite calm and sensible when he wants to be.”
For all the plaudits and his statistical satisfaction, Mata’s main objective is to win a trophy for the first time with United. His CV is full of the biggest prizes on offer — World Cup, European Championship, Champions League, Europa League — but he has never won a league title, which he believes is within United’s grasp this season.
Van Gaal’s side are only two points behind Manchester City, the leaders, but having already lost away to Swansea City and Arsenal, Mata admits that their away form must improve if they are to mount a sustained challenge, starting with today’s trip to Everton.
“I’ve not won the title in Spain or England, just the cups, so the league is something that’s missing,” he says. “I’d love to win it for Manchester United. I spoke to David De Gea about it and he said when they won the league here, it was unbelievable how the city of Manchester celebrated. He said all fans and the whole town went out on parade. I’ve always known United as a club that fights for trophies and we have to take them back there.
“We need to be more consistent and tougher, particularly away from home. We need a tougher mentality and a tougher shape. If we’re winning at Swansea we need to protect the result by being compact, but we didn’t do that. We have to win more away games if we’re going to win the title.”

If the biggest game is against the 6th best team in Belgium (based on current form) then it really doesn't say much at all. Lukaku being able to destroy those defenses at 16 has everything to do with it because it shows just how sub-par the teams in Belgium are. So yes, he has done basically nothing of note so far this season which contrasts sharply with his attitude off the pitch

Against the same Belgium club, all the players were below par and it was the most important game of the season considering we already missed CL and we were about to miss again had we lost.

Again what Lukaku did when he was 16 has nothing to do with what the initial point was.

Attitude off the pitch? Lol, your posts about Depay since he took #7 jersey are just terrible and it's so baffling why anyone gets wound up so much when a player chooses some number. Yet to see what's that attitude off the pitch story is.

Re Lukaku destroying Belgian league, he has better record in his first proper season in PL (as a 19 year old) than in Belgian league. Shows how terrible PL is.

There is no attitude off the pitch. No idea what Alcaraz is talking about. He's either confused, badly informed or outright lying. Because he hasn't been told off by Giggs or anyone at the club. I can give you that straight from our AP who has been up there this week. Club really happy with who he is as a person, suprised at how quickly he has bonded with other players, works hard in training, just needs to deliver more on the pitch. They also admit his play has been impacted by not having Shaw behind him. They have bonded very well on and off the pitch.

What exactly has Memphis done that has irked you? Yes he hasnt had the start everyone expected him to and has been bang average, but the exact same can be said for the whole Chelsea squad, the Arsenal squad before Sanchez hit his stride and then the whole team clicked, even City haven't been stellar. No one has been consistent in the BPL this year so why you single out Memphis I don't know. Hazard himself has been dropped because he isn't working hard enough.

It's really bizarre. To the point he is making things up.

Memphis is what, 21?

A young kid, away from home for the first time, in a new Country and new League which is a big step to what's he's used to with massive expectations on him and a sizeable fee. Kid has considerable talent but he's naturally not only gonna' take time to settle and adapt, but he's gonna' go through the ups and downs most young kids go through. Seems like a nice dude who's well liked by everyone.

He's just getting magnified because that's what happens in today's transient World with big fees and expectations. People want instant success.

Maybe he struggles to adapt and ultimately goes somewhere else. Maybe he turns into the player his talents suggest he could be. But it's WAY too early to be criticising him and holding him up to such high expectations in an ideal World. Pity he can't just naturally develop without the added pressure as he was a great looking long term prospect that you hope would be able to contribute early in spells as he grew.

Nothing much to see there right now. Just a young player slowly finding his feet.

Tbh, he's not even getting any real critcism anywhere apart from Alcaraz. Most people have realised he'll find his feet.

I like him a lot. Thought it was a great signing when you pipped us to him and haven't changed that with his early quiet games. Kids a talent with a great attitude. Certainly won't be for the lack of trying if he doesn't ultimately work out at Utd.

Just wish certain TV companies and commentators/ analysts would call him by what he's openly asked to be called. It's getting a bit insulting to me now when they continue to ignore what the guy himself asks.

Exactly. United know full well what they have.

And it irks me too. I've brought it up numerous times at BT
