The Manchester United Thread

They still have a 'tier 1' status?

Huh? Who knew?

They still have vast financial power and a serious appeal to players. The whole reason there's such panic around the club at the moment is because the allure is fading and they realistically have another season at most before their fall from grace becomes more than just a slip up in the grand scheme of things.

Tier 1.25/1.5 is probably more accurate although their Ferguson reputation is still so great that they can reliably compete with the rest of the tier 1 clubs for players/sponsorship.

Put it this way, Spurs and United both go in for the same player. Who is more likely to get him?

The question is when the bid is put in. Right now? Spurs, but thats because no one expects LVG to be the manager.

If Jose is managing, then United.

What United need to do is remove the managerial flux that currently exists. Even if it was LVG it would still be better than being unsure. A decision needs to be made either way

United more often than not obviously. But on the pitch, they've no stronger a squad than Tottenham at present. Stature of club there's obviously no comparison. And as you noted, from a financial standpoint, and ability to attract investment, it's a non discussion and will be for a good whiles. But right here, right now, there's not much difference in the two from a football standpoint.

That 'appeal' is slipping by the passing season as you noted. The longer you're away from winning trophies and the Champions league (in effect three straight years on both as they crashed out the group the one year they've been back in); the less attractive you become.

Utd are currently little different to what we are on the park. Both with a lot of work to do to get anywhere near back to were both clubs where.

Flip that question to Utd and Liverpool go in for the same player. Who is more likely to get him?

That is no longer anywhere near as clear cut as this time last year and that gaps shortening all the time.

It's between both worlds really in March. But come the summer, United will almost invariably win that race.

Yeah, nobody wants to sign for the club where manager is on the brink. Might be the real reason why there weren't any signings in the winter, when LVG seemed dead in the water.

That was exactly the reason United missed out. not because of where they are, but because they (Ricardo Rodriguez being one) didnt know who would be there in the summer.

. It's also why taking Mourinho on will either work out spectacularly for them or be terrible. If he is as dogmatic and stubborn as he was with us, then they're ******. If the Jose of old turns up though, pragmatic and willing to do what it takes to win, expect them to be an absolute force again.

If Jose doesn't land his dream job he can only blame himself really. If he didn't keep behaving like a **** and reignite United's board old worries, he probably would've be in the job already instead of Van Gaal.

The Carneiro thing in particular is still hanging over him and keeps coming back in the media. If he has any brains left he should man up and apologize.

If Van Gaal's your manager, and you've dipped out of the Champions League again (maybe crashed out the Europa to us and we've gone on in the competition .... but let's live that and not tempt fait before the 2 games) I'm not so sure.

Klopp's a great leveller. European players in particular want to play for him. Mourinho flips that back somewhat as you mentioned but still nothing like if Rodgers was still here.

Money's obviously relative, and it still remains to be seen just how far FSG will go regardless of Ayre talking about an 'open war chest' for the summer. (I'd need confirmation if they said today was Monday. That's how far I currently trust them.). But if a similar bid was accepted, and salary's weren't that far apart; I don't think it's as clear cut a decision as many Utd fans would still like to think.

That said, I don't think we're going to be looking at the same sort of players anyways in the main. If there's a top echelon one that fits, we'll be in. Whereas with Utd if Woodward's time is any indication, you're more likely to go for a big name just because whilst with Klopp, it has to be the right fit.

Not ground breaking news, but De Gea is still the key man you need to hang onto.

I'll be stunned if Madrid aren't back and that start's up again in earnest the summer. And if Woodward spends all summer on that and negates everything else again to Utd's detriment more fool him.

The salary/bid wouldn't be close though, if it needed not to be.

Part of Subtle's point is; if United needed to financially blow away a rival to get a player, they can do so to the majority of clubs. Certainly Liverpool or Spurs right now

I think it's hard to put a finger on what united need till a manager pops up. If di marzio is right, and he usually is, Jose is after a central mid and attacking player for United already, we'll see though

Ohh we need more creativity? Lets just totally neglect our best youth player in Pereira and shove him to the U21's whilst we keep ****** James Weir on the bench. Or even worse, Fellaini marching straight back on the bench after an injury.

After yesterday's match there's no doubt in my mind that LVG is deranged / has gone senile (which makes me worry about Giggsys input).

As soon as I saw our lineup I was sure we would lose. I mean you play against WBA, a team managed by TP, with 4 cbs at the back, two combative dms and everybody in their squad being huge in body. And what do you do? You dont play the one player you have who can run at dm (Schneiderlin), put the old and static (and way past it) Carrick in instead. You then look at your quickest and most improved player in the last month DEPAY and think nah he wont do and you bench him. Was it such a surprise that the more the match went on the more WBA were playing past/around Carrick. You are then chasing the match. You dont care that Rushford hasnt had a decent pass or cross from anywhere but you delay the substitutions and then you take off Herrera (not Carrick?!!!!) for Schneiderlin (he should have come in on the 46th minute btw) and you then take off Rashford and play without a cf or with the lightweight and totally unsuited MARTIAL (I watched the match and Im still not sure what exactly we did after that). And then you take off Darmian with 5 minutes to go and put Fosu- Mensah (why? - only justifiable reason would be that Darmian was coming back from injury - but if so why wait till the 85th minute?!).

Truly the mind boggles. Every ******* body sees these things its not quantum physics ...

I cant understand why Pereira doesnt feature more. He ll leave us and be great and we ll cry as we have done for POGBA.

Oh we' ll come through the matches against you no problems, Ive got no worries about that mate.

Btw Ill be at OT for the 2nd match yeah! (its been ages since Ive last been)

Me too. I'll wave at yer as you leave early with your season in tatters. ;).

If being ahead of you in the premier league, still in the FA Cup and looking more than likely to beat you in the Europe league from recent results vs you, equal "season in tatters", I'd much prefer that over Liverpool's normal season of having no chance of winning anything.

Sounds like any Utd season pre or post Ferguson. ;).
