The Manchester United Thread

We surely have enough attacking talent in midfield. Need more defensive options with Fletcher being out injured.

Not at all, you need someone to replace Scholes so you can actually let the lad retire while he is still in his prime.

United need, in order: A creative deep-lying player, an aggressive but cultured holder, a new left-back, and more luck with injuries.

I disagree, take out Scholes (who can't last forever) we have Anderson/Cleverley, are they good enough to play for a season and challenge on all fronts? I don't think so. The main priority next year should be giving a better display in Europe because quite frankly this year was unacceptable and us winning the title will glitter over that (if we win the title).

What about Pogba and Giggs (at least for one more season)?

Plus I have heard good things about that young Italian AMC we have (Blanking on his name at the moment)

As I understood it, he wanted to and still wants to keep playing as he felt that he retired prematurely.

Scholes,Carrick, Fletcher,Giggs ,cleverley, pogba(If staying ) and anderson. In 4-4-2 how will you give guys playing time ? Everyone is not gonna stay happy like park if not playing. One out of giggs or scholes needs to leave if we are buying a midfilder simple.

4 fronts, more than 60 games, and Giggs and Clev are versatile. Scholes wont be able to play next season in this tempo, fatigue will get him, Fletcher has carrier threatening illness and Pogba is a youngster, he'll get his chances off the bench and in cup games.

I love Scholes and Giggs deeply they have been absolutely fantastic players. But we need to move on sooner rather than later and stop relying on these guys, get some fresh faces in the team and freshen up that midfield.

If Gaitan is being brought i dont see where giggs and clev get game time on wings.Young, nani ,park ,valencia and gaitan where would you play clev ?

Exactly. We don't need Gaitan. This is not FM.

I think we do need Gaitan. I think he's a gem of a playmaker and I don't see why we can't play him in the middle of the park or have him in a free roaming role like Kagawa, Gotze or Hazard? After all it is a long season and I'm sure SAF is looking to add more creativity in the engine room to challenge in Europe next season ;)

Completely agree, you can't rely on Cleverley and Anderson for creativity in the middle of the park, we lacked creativity in Europe this season.

We also lacked a person who could single-handily control the tempo, its clear to anyone watching United play that Scholes not only provides creativity but the know how of when to speed the game up or slow it down.

I know we need that type of player as well, never said we didn't. I just do not have faith in Cleverley and Anderson when Scholes has gone. Especially when we are a team meant to be challenging for Europe and Domestic success.

Im not saying you are disagreeing or wrong, just further adding to your point.

Oh, well it certainly should be an interesting summer, I have faith in Fergie though, I am sure he knows more than anyone that our performances in Europe were not good enough for a club like United!

Who do you think we could sign in the summer who could control the tempo and dictate the play in the central midfield? I know Modric is an obvious player but I can't see United spending that much on him.

Well of course Modric is the obvious choice. To be completely honest with you, I just do not know of a player who could, I mean they are a rare breed of player.

I will say that the man is not Sneijder and is not Gaitan.

So, all I can see is that some people want to remove Rooney from this 'false 9 and half' postion, just to buy Gaitan ? There's only one player in the world better at that position, guess who.

The problem with looking for a player in the mold of a Scholes is that they usually are older experienced players with a calm head and good mental attributes, not many youngsters around that can fill that role well.

Manchester United chief executive David Gill has revealed the club are set for an "interesting" summer transfer window.

Speaking to the club's official website, Gill, who has been with United since 1997, explained that work on potential transfer targets is being stepped up as the season comes to a close.

He said: "We're looking at all that. The work goes on all year round but obviously intensifies as we come to the end of the season in terms of players.

"There's various contracts we've got to do, we'll look at some acquisitions and there will be some players who will leave. It's an interesting time."

With the Red Devils currently five points clear of rivals Manchester City at the top of the Premier League, Sir Alex Ferguson's men appear favourites to seal a 20th league title.

When asked whether he would have taken this position at the start of the season, Gill replied: "I think we all would.

"It's been an amazing run and it's going to be a tense end to the season. If we do it, it will be fantastic.

"This time of year's not good [for the nerves]. You do get tense but we've done very well and are in good shape now - five points ahead with four games to go. It's going to be tight but it's been wonderful."
