The Manchester United Thread

Think I'd be most disappointed at not testing Brad Jones. Who's an even worse 'keeper than Mingolet which is quite impressive going.

Bad night but there's 5 more to get back on track and the other game finishing 1-1 is a bonus.

I'm not one to whinge or dwell, and I'm always a preacher of how difficult some offside decision's linesmen have to make, especially in the split second of live action... but for crying out loud, this is what, 10 yards from him? Bailly probably thought his shrewd move (moved up to play him off) was undone by Darmian far side or something, he'll see later how it wasn't.

We simply weren't good enough, yes, but that's really poor officiating.

This performance reminds me of good old van gaal days...but with less possession.

I love it how quickly teams are in crisis. Liverpool were after a few not so great result post beating us at home. We're in crisis after drawing the hardest away game in our group and United are in crisis after losing to the best team in the league and 1 game in a group which they'll probably win.

Modern day football mate. Absolutely ridiculous. It's either one extreme or the other with very little middle ground.

The comparisons with LVG time is rubbish.

What statistical models showed by md4 is that United saw a noticeable increase in shot volume and shot quality which represented a top 4 team. Defence hasn't chanced since Van Gaal. In other words, United are a much better outfit going foward.

I get what you mean, and yes people are too quick to jump in and judge sometimes but come on, that team of players should be destroying teams of Feyenoord's level. A team full of world class players again one of the also-ran's of Dutch football.

We cant win every game, and nobody expects us to, but to play a game where you dont even get one meaningful shot on target is a disgrace, regardless of opposition. If we played them off the pitch and had 20+ shots on goal and lose to an offside goal you can put it down to bad luck and just one of those games, that every team gets a few times a season. But we didnt even turn up. The level of the players that were involved in that game, to put in a performance like that is simply not good enough, no matter how many excuses get thrown in.

Again its not the result that bothers me. I know we cant win every game. Its the performance. You would think a lot of those players would be itching to get on and give Jose something to think about. Well they have certainly done that. Better get some padding on that bench because a few of them will/should be sat there for quite a while.

As for this game yes it was a bit. But this season no. Read damola3 post about chances created.

Depay also needs to rein in his long-shots. If he passes the ball a few yards from his regular shooting locations, the chances of scoring multiply.

Here's comparing Ronaldo, Messi and Neymar's shot maps to Andros Townsend. They all have shot volumes of elite goalscorers but... the other three's shot quality is much better. Ronaldo, Neymar and particularly Messi rein in the long shots much more. As you can see, the chance of scoring hugely increases as shots are more central and close to goal. If Depay passes or dribbles a few more yards to goal, he will be much more productive.

This.

I'm not expecting to win every game, I'm not expecting the league title.
Hiring Jose and splashing the cash is no silver bullet. But I do expect these millionaires to put a shift in, work some space and get a few meaningful shots away.

That was one of the laziest performances I've seen in years.

How was Pogba?

No worse than an other United player. They were all poor.

But take nottin' away from Feyenoord. (Who were far from great themselves.). Top the Dutch League with 5 wins out of 5. To think Utd just had to turn up to win was never going to be the case regardless. This is a tricky group. No question one they should come through, but it's no cakewalk. The only positive out the night was the other game ended in a draw so no real damage done save for pride and a few lost coefficient points.
