MANCHESTER UNITED AND LIVERPOOL HAVE IN FACT, HAD VERY SIMILAR STARTS, DESPITE WHAT MANY WOULD THINK
Whilst people have been praising Liverpool left, right and centre, and rightfully so given the manner in which they've won games recently, but realistically, there isn't a great deal of difference between their start & that of Jose Mourinho's new side. That's taking absolutely nothing away nothing from Liverpool's super start, results aside they've looked really good, but my point is that people have exaggerated Manchester United's narrow Manchester derby defeat that could've easily ended up a different way in the second half, and a standard "one of those" away slip up's against Watford in a match that was probably worth losing in hindsight, as it forced Mourinho wake up & smell the coffee in regards to Fellaini & Rooney not suiting the system that best suits us.
We're only 6 games in, but Manchester United & Liverpool have both played two mutual opponents so far; Hull & Leicester, and our performances against both of those sides were actually both very similar.
Liverpool hosted Hull at the weekend, United traveled up there last month, and both sides absolutely destroyed Mike Phelan's outfit, the only difference was Liverpool got that early goal which opened the floodgates and allowed them to win by a handsome margin, putting Hull in an awkward "we have no plan B" situation, before going down to 10 men and completely falling apart. Liverpool and United had a combined 61 shots against Hull alone (Liverpool 31, United 29) with a combined 43 key passes (Liverpool 24, United 19) and when you take into consideration Liverpool were at home & United were away, and Liverpool were playing against 10 men for more than an hour, they were both very even performances all things considered.
Both sides also hosted the champions, Leicester, both winning 4-1. Liverpool having 17 shots, United having 16 in their best performance at Old Trafford since beating Arsenal 8-2 in my opinion. Liverpool played 17 key passes, United playing 12, Liverpool creating 4 "clear cut chances", United creating 3, and considering we had the game wrapped up at half time, having 62.5% of those shots and creating all of those clear cut chances in the first 45, leaving it a matter of controlling and seeing it out in the second half, whereas the Liverpool match was game on for the full 90 practically, makes it very flattering on United's behalf.
And yes, I know not every game is the same despite having the same opponents, but to be honest it's as solid a thing to go on as any when comparing the two side's starts, and considering Klopp has been working with Liverpool almost a year now (looks to have everything nicely gelled in place), whereas Mourinho's been in all of five minutes and is only now starting to figure out his best side to suit our strengths, I find it a little funny how one team can be praised to the moon and back from the media & in general whereas in the other corner, everything has been slightly blown out of proportion.
