The Manchester United Thread

.... as you'd well remember from last March at Anfield ;) .....

Indeed. How could anyone forget the biggest game outside of a final there's ever been between L'pool and United on the biggest stage of all?

Thursday, March 10, 2016. Nice of you to mention after getting such a humiliation in front of the rest of Europe .....

Wait, Utd getting completely mugged off wasn't the 'last March' you meant? You need to go to the same trash talking lessons zz is booking. ;).

Reverse psychology?

Sneaky!

Not at all Scouse.
I simply don't have confidence in this group of players (yet), and think Liverpool will have an easy enough ride on Monday.

I've always been a realist.
No point claiming we are going to compete, just because I'm a fan.

zz be coming gunning for yer mate with slanderous talk like that! Lol.

Enjoy the game. The atmosphere, with an extra 10 thousand or so, first game under the lights at the expanded ground, should be one of the special Anfield atmosphere's all things being equal.

This has seriously disturbed me.

So I'm going to pretend I never saw it, it never happened, and such heinous thoughts never even entered your head!

Are you really calling an Europa League quarter final the biggest stage of all? Ok, it's an underrated little competition, but come on :D

As bad as we've been in recent years, Van Gaal would love to have played Liverpool every week ;) It was a handy 6 points for our admittedly embarrassing, top four pushes. No doubt you're better now, and we're under yet another new transition - but as you say, all form goes out the window when it's United v Liverpool - so let's bring your lot back crashing down to earth ;)

Tbh, I'd probably rate Premier League results higher that a Europa League quarter final, especially in a season like this when we're both likely to bang there at the end of the season, but that's just me being guilty of under appreciating the Europa League again. But for what it's worth, Liverpool also won the most important league fixture between the sides in recent years back in 2008/09, in March at Old Trafford in a title run in - but lost out in the end by 4 points.

Nah. There's NEVER been a bigger clash between the two clubs than two straight knockout European ties outside of the finals as they have a trophy at stake.

You don't get ANY bigger than the European stage. That's the pinnacle. That tie overshadowed the Champions League games that week/ round the World over.

Random question Scouse. Would you rather win the league next or a Champions League trophy?

I'd rather win the Champions League as League Champions if that helps. NOTHING will ever top Istanbul. That's just the greatest European Cup Final there's ever been. But as fantastic as it was, it's always been tinged a little for me from the first 4 as we where the English Champions on those occasions. (The way the European Cup still should be IMHO. Straight knock-out from round one. ONLY Champions against Champions but that's a whole other discussion.).

I guess I'd say the league as it's been over a quarter of a Century. But you don't get ANY bigger occasion in sports for me than the European Cup final. World Cup Final/ Super Bowl et all. The European Cup Final is the single one off biggest game of them all. And being Champions of a whole Continent is just unbeatable.

But all in stages. (Hopefully) PL this year. Then we'll look to go one further than Jurgens debut European season next! :).

a strange one this is,as i can see us getting hammered but at the same time remain confident we have enough to cause pool defence a lot of problems.Would take a draw all day long

Yeah, that doesnt rank anywhere near any of the top clashes we've won and lost.

That's a given for Mourinho in a big game so you'll get that wish. Not been a game he's played against L'pool when he hasn't set up with everyone deep in his own half, slowing the game completely down, making it bitty and hoping to nick one at some point on the break.

Games between he and Benitez, although compelling drama at the time for everything that surrounded them, were like watching paint dry.

Mourinho is a winner and knows how to beat Liverpool better than anyone. I know why you see it as a bad thing but honestly we'd be playing right into your hands if we came and tried to play you at your own game.

For me I just look at your defence and don't see how we can't score at least one on the night. If we're tight at the back then we have a chance of coming from Anfield with a win.

Can't believe I'm hearing this from a Liverpool fan who has Lovren and ****** Sakho as options!

But anyway you can think what you like... all I know is he was one of the best CB's in the league last year, only contenders against him were the Leicester pair.

Vertongen and Aldeweireld!

I still struggle to see how people like Scouse or anyone else would look at Smalling as a weakness given the season he had last year though was my main point. Him and Blind are as good a partnership as any in this league I think, with Bailly coming into the mix it just gets better.
