BTW, Klopp's L'pool don't play with an ostensively 'traditional' DM. Nor does Guardiola's City. In response to your point that all top teams have one. It depends on your style and what you want from your players.

I agree. But that was under a different manager. Have no idea why he is not playing or liked!

If he's not good enough (which as a plain DM I'd take serious issue with), why can't someone like Herrera be converted with time on the training field and patience? Henderson had never played as a #6 in his career until Klopp turned to him after the Seville defeat and told him he wanted him there this year. And now he's playing as well as anyone in the Country in the role. Or TFM? Why not put faith in him and give him a shot?

BTW, how'd the Sunderland game end?

I think the thing with schneiderlin is that at Southampton he had Wanyama next to him. He was the DM of the pair and Schneiderlin was more B2B. The stats would suggest that Schneiderlin was a very good DM with regards to tackles and interceptions, you have to think that a lot of that was down to the positioning of Wanyama and his abilities on the pitch.

I'm not by any means saying that Schneiderlin is a bad DM or that he can't be a key player for us given the time. But two managers have now seen him, and also without wanyama next to him and both managers for whatever reasons don't seem to want to play him.

Yeah, that leaves you a good ways behind Everton with half the U-23 season played. Don't get how he's not even used those games to try get the Armenian in match shape if that's the case and he wouldn't be outright blocking anyone real goods development?

Fernandinho doesn't play as a traditional DM for Pep at City. He might be the deepest at times and when they line-up, but he's not ostensibly what you'd class as a DM. He's an all rounder. The team is expected to cover that role. Same with Klopp's L'pool. Why in a large part we never even considered Kante. The amount of times we'd use a DM in that vein through a season you can count on one hand and the cost of Kante, regardless of how brilliant he is at that role, just couldn't be justified. Kev Stewart is the closest to an old fashioned, traditional DM we have the squad and he's perfect as he's cheap and happy to play a very small bit part just closing out games off the bench when needed and the rare start.

Can's role has been another that's been completely redefined this year. He's now part of the attacking two of the three. He may end up in Henderson's role through a game if he was the closest one to drop in when Henderson went forward the way all our players rotate. But he's no longer viewed as a '#6' as Klopp views the DM role. He's been very noticeably a lot further forward since he's returned to the side.

I'm finding it very interesting that both managers in the PL who have come from the Bundesliga have seen something with English football that they neither play a traditional DM nor anyone in the traditional #10 role. Instead playing an all round midfield playmaker as a 6 and a collection of 10 quality midfielders in the traditional central midfield positions to aid in working in tight spaces and the transition. Without having any stereotypical 'number 10' position per se.

Me personally I prefer the more in depth stuff that people talk about, rather than just saying X is good or he is better than Y. I used to be more involved with the chatter but as I have seen a sum total of zero top flight games this season its hard for me to be involved

Martial is a left winger, has been for his career. Can definitely become a forward. so can Rashford. While Zlatan is there we dont need to buy, people just need to find form. We do need to buy after that, because either Martial stays left and we are a forward short, or he goes central and we are a wide player down. Either way, you still get a hole in the side.

Matic was at his best when he moved to close opponents, when he sat and waited, he was exposed. in the 3-4-3, he can harass higher up the pitch at leisure, covered by the machine that is Kante.

We play much better with a sitter like Carrick, it speaks volumes to a) his ability and b) what we miss from Fellaini etc that we look excellent whenever he plays. Must reinforce him with Weigl to succeed
