The Manchester United Thread

Mad how a fan of a club with less European Cups than Nottingham Forest and the same # of league titles as Sunderland can try disparage any trophy. Let alone one that had a 'history' of pretty much nottin' before Russian rubles tipped up. One would of thought ANY piece of silverware would be highly cherished and lorded when your trophy cabinet is so porous in relation to the real big boys. Shrugs.

Where the point is bang on the head is the complete hypocrisy from both Mourinho and many Utd fans in mocking a European Major (Which the UEFA Cup/ Europa League is how ever anyone tries's to argue the contrary) as somehow second-rate ..... until they win it themselves. (The same goes many Utd fans as regards the League Cup.). That is nauseating.

I don’t think you quite got the point Scouse. Yes the Europa League is fantastic to win and it was a great feeling when we did it as well but I don’t think it should be used as evidence to show that Jose is doing a good job particularly due to the gulf in resources between United and the other teams who competed in it.

We got the point. But the point was bollocks about Madrid ending Mourinho. He still has won trophies since. And he still has Utd doing better than anything we’ve done for ages. We’re just going through some poor form. Nothing more nothing less.

You stated, twice, the UEFA Cup/ Europa League wasn't a prestigious trophy.

I completely disagree. (It only isn't seen as such in England by modern-day fans who've had Sky and a slew of managers denigrate it into believing it's not a major competition. But right across the Continent, it's still viewed as highly prestigious and a major trophy to win. As it is and always should be.).

I wasn't responding to any argument on the job Mourinho is doing. Purely that which I'll never fail to find completely ridiculous everytime anyone comes out with it.

*Edit* Three times sorry. Not twice. With all the stupidity I miss-counted.

And all I am saying is that one of those trophies does not count for much considering the huge advantage he had over all the other clubs in the competition.

Fenerbahce, Zenit, Lyon with lacazette, Roma, Shakhtar, Schalke, Fiorentina and Inter are all big teams who were in from the start and Monchengladbach, Besiktas and Tottenham were among the teams to drop in. There were a lot of good teams in not united or mourinhos fault that none of them stayed in long enough to take on united except fener in the groups

There is a huge gulf in resources between United and any other club in the competition. Its even more damning when you yourself agree that he did not even face the biggest competitors in the competition.

So you are saying when the Europa League was the UEFA Cup (and Cup Winners Cup) it was better. Sorry I think you have it wrong both those European Cup competitionas and the European Cup (forerunner of the Champions League) had their fair share of 'smaller' clubs playing in them. They counted for something then and still do. It's just the British Media which has brainwashed fans into thinking it's the money rich Champions League or nothing.

How does the Europa League count for much when one club has significantly more resources than all the other clubs in the competition?

Aside from misguided romantic sentiments, I have yet to hear a proper counter to the above point.

So it only counts if you're poor and win something? Considering the size of our club and resources available, we'll never be able to win anything that counts for much will we, unless we win it beating PSG, Real, Bayern, Barca and City along the way.

So since it’s resources that count I assume you feel that real shouldn’t have celebrated their champions league wins as they had spent the most of everyone in the competition and two years ago had an easy run to the final. And if PSG win it this year they should go well we expect that with the money and not bother celebrating as they have the most resources. Also a somewhat ironic moment from a Chelsea fan given the huge amount of spending to get them the early titles

Can Mou change his statement to Liverpool paying striker prices for cb's now please. thx.

The fact that Manchester United were significantly better off economical than the other clubs in the semi-finals in the Europa League last season did not give them God given right to win, nor does it devalue a competition, if that was the case all the major leagues in Europe would be devalued. The two leading league competitions (La Liga and the English Premiership) are dominated by the same teams every season but they are still valued. So your point about a competition being worthless when a rich club wins is invalid.

Lindelof has been average lately which is good news for him. It's better than what he was at the beginning of the season lol

Was surprised he didn’t start against Burnley. Him and Shaw have been our best defenders of late when played. Lindelöf definitely settling now.

Except the gulf in resources between the top clubs in the CL is nowhere near that in the Europa League.

So you are basically saying that the FA Cup is worthless as well, after all the non-league clubs don't have the same resources as the Premier League clubs.
