The Manchester United Thread

Mourinho insists on 4-2-3-1 because he sheepishly brought 50 attacking players who all expect to play.

And yeah, throwing around Pogba's fee may sound like a broken record, but you gotta admit it's absolutely unheard of that a $90 million central midfielder can only play in one formation.

And I was already saying when you where buying Pogba, that he's a YouTube highlight reel player who lacks tactical chops to be truly world class. The argument back then was that he is still young and will eventually improve. Well it's been 2 years, the "kid" is now a 25 year old man, and there's no improvement in sight. At this point you gotta wonder whether it's the manager who can't drill him or if Pogba just doesn't have what it takes to get to that next level.

He can play more than one formation. But if you put a two man midfield up against a 3 man of relatively equal ability, 3 man wins.

Every other top side in the league plays 3 men in midfield.

**** City even send their full backs into the middle of the parks to cover KdB

De Bryune did do it, from a 10 to an 8 in deeper role. Fernandinho did it from MC to DMC. Pogba is a central midfielder 2 or 3, he should still not be as ill disciplined as he was. Matic shoulda gave him a bollocking as well.

KdB never plays in a 2 man mid. He plays in a a 3. Half the time with a full back acting as the 4th

Yeah, for him it was more on the new role, still kept discipline in effecting from sitting in the middle next to silva/gundogan if and when needed without buggering off round the park. Pogba should be able to play in a two or three at his age/training level for me better than the game. Basic stuff staying with your positional counterpart.

A 3 man midfield will nearly always beat a 2 man midfield of equal ability.

KdB doesn't really have to keep discipline. The whole point of the full back is for both he and Silva to vacate CM and flood forwards, with the full backs moving inside along Fernandinho.

If you swapped KdB and Pogba you'd have near enough the same issue every time

True, be interested to see if Pep keeps them like that with Mendy & Walker playing...

This isn't to say Pogba is blameless. But we hamstring ourselves against top sides and sides looking to control the park playing 4-2-3-1.

Indeed. We should be playing 4-3-3. considering we want 2 mids I think the penny is dropping, but in the mean time get herrera in there for gods sake!

I would think we'll stay with the 4141/433/451/4123 thing we have going on, but its Pep so **** knows. I cant see Mendy being asked to sit in the role/mid as Delph has, his pace/crossing is too good to waste down the left, regardless of Sane's improvement in the area.

Alternating the lb or rb sitting in when the attack is built from other side will take exceptional movement, with the pace they shift the ball at the min.

I can't really agree with that. It's not as simple as, this formation always beats that formation, all else being equal. It depends on the setup, coaching and individual instructions. 3 man midfield isn't magic beans, formations in real games are fluid. If people are drilled well, stay composed on the ball and make good triangles of passing options for the guy on the ball, you're not going to be overrun easily regardless if you play 4-3-3, 4-4-2 or 0-0-10.

Whoever put up the Sanchez dog banner yesterday wants a life ban.

Sky generation footie fans man. SMH @ the cringe.

Demi Mitchell had another fantastic performance yesterday for Hearts. Grabbed an assist and was MOTM again according to Hearts fans.

Chong has transformed this u23 team today! Great dribbling, passing, skill. He’s creating so much space for the rest of the team dragging Derby players towards him. And his decision making is top draw. Another star in the making. Will defo go on tour in the Summer then hopefully a good loan somewhere. Mensah starts for Palace.

Fantastic by Chong does 2 defenders and wins a peno hacked down in the box. Redmond tucks it away. 1-0 Utd.

Derby really are disgusting, dirty Cnuts at all levels!!

United have signed former Man City u15s midfielder Alfie Hughes. He was involved with the England u15s last year and u16s this year

From reports in Spain-

Meanwhile, Mourinho is ready to bring Spanish babe Mario Soriano from Atletico Madrid to Old Trafford when he is 16.

Super Mario is rated as the best player at the club’s academy but they can do nothing about him leaving when the season ends in April.

Soriano would go straight into United’s youth ranks. He would become the best Spanish kid to head to United since Gerard Pique was plucked from Barcelona in 2004.
