The Manchester United Thread

I'd be more impressed with United if they actually had a plan and brought in a few players under the radar (bit like VdB) in these last few weeks, but I'm sure they'll just ***** on Sancho (at best) and try to spin the PR out of it to death. I'm not saying it's not a good signing if it ever happens, but nothing impressive about our transfer strategy once again. It highlights more than ever whether it happens or not, the problems we will still have. One player won't fix United anyway, we need 2 or 3 good signings rather than 1 great to fix our squad this season anyway in my opinion. All the top 6 teams have strengthened more than us, whether you agree with the signings or not, they will be stronger for the present, which is most important. Sancho makes us stronger if it happens, but will anyone be really impressed or convinced in their hearts of hearts that this is us as a club going in the right direction?

Bar Chelsea who has really strengthened greatly? Liverpool have got Thiago but we was never challenging them anyway this season, great signing btw.

Sancho would be a game changer our attack was as good as anything last season and that was without a RW for most of it. Add to that the class depth DvB will bring. Having Fernandes for a full season. Pogba fit from the start. Sanchez huge wage off the bill that was causing all sorts of grief on and off the field. Add to that the natural progress of a younger players improving. Plenty to look forward to this season. Never mind the window not even being closed yet, so lots more can change.

If you can’t see the change in direction since Ole has been here then something is wrong. Can things be improved of coarse but for what he has done in his early reign I am more than encouraged.

A bit too early to tell and you are basing a lot on the previous blunders committed. While those can't be discounted, let's not sound out the alarm bells yet, shall we? This always was an extremely difficult window to get deals done, and despite that, we might still get about 2 more signings, which will be a really good window, if it is a LB/RM. Let's wait. And where else would you like to strengthen (basis player availability)? CB/ST/DM - definitely. But the players who would improve us are not available this window (or are too expensive), so no point in thinking about it.

For this window, if we get a first teamer RW, that's a really good starting 11, with Greenwood, van de Beek, Williams, James, Fred able to make an impact from the bench, something I would quite honestly be happy with. That is already a marked improvement from Pereira, Lingard, from the bench with James starting the previous season.

As for the direction, I'll take small steps that we are going in the right direction, thank you very much. Our profile for signings has changed, we are targeting people who want to be here, no more going after superstars with bloated wages (Sanchez/Bale), no more short term deals (Reguilon) - what else exactly are you expecting? Rome wasn't built in a day, and honestly, this is the best in terms of squad quality I've seen it since Fergie, maybe?

My only irritation is that Sancho was stretched out for this long, without maybe any backups. But then again, so was van Dijk for Liverpool. Only difference is that Sancho has not confirmed we would be the only club he wants to play for (although he wants back to Manchester, what have you). With that, it's a wait and watch. But overall, I'm reasonably encouraged. If we end up with a LB/RM signing, that makes for an excellent window and a squad easily able to challenge Top-4.

So, in this situation, I would say we are going in the right direction, for now. A lot depends on how we handle the closing stages of the transfer window. But the club direction, I feel it is pretty good, with a renewed emphasis on youth, getting a younger profile in, clear pathway to the first team and a really good first 11. Now, whether they deliver on the pitch and whether Ole has a plan other than use pace to counter - that we shall see. That is a manager thing, not a club direction thing.

Club confirmed today that Teden Mengi has been promoted to the first team squad permanently ?? will not be going out on loan. The club must have a CB or 2 lined up to leave now.

Woah, I never once questioned in last post on the pitch or Ole, he has certainly taken us in the right direction so far. That's a different matter for a different day,

But, I was referring to the transfer strategy, it's all well and good putting your eggs in Sancho basket but we are no closer to that deal even happening now.

You've got to remember we are one injury away from disaster in both attack and defence at the moment. IF the typical players that usually get injured do get injured, Shaw for example will be backed up by Williams playing most his games, in CL season a recipe for disaster. No offence to the lad but he's not ready and he definitely needs to go back to RB to have hope of being a success here.

Hence why I said in my previous post that to me it would be more impressive if United done 2 or 3 under the radar signings in last few weeks, it would address more potential issues we can have this season. Especially when you already say, that last year the attack doesn't need a massive improvement anyway.

Going from Greenwood to Sancho in the attack will make a difference, but it won't mean much if you're relying on Ighalo and Williams when a few inevitable injuries happen. Especially against opponents we will be facing, we will get torn a new one.

I said don't use this argument, because it's silly and all it achieves is justifying United's lack of business ;)

All the top 6 have strengthened significantly (in personnel or quality), whether you agree with the signings or not is irrelevant.

Sure for example Reguilon we should not have done, I agree, but that doesn't excuse not getting a LB anyway. Which may happen in the final few weeks, but then I am questioning why we can't be more prepared for a new season.

If we drop points in these opening 3/4/5 winnable games, I shall blame the board more than Ole.

Oh, I know you didn't question, I did. On the pitch and Ole, I mean. That's where I'm still most concerned about a plan to break down sides, although having Pogba and Fernandes in the same squad helps. And we need better attacking transitions and movement.

Also, I'm not denying we need signings. I already admitted that we need both a LB and a RW. And the club does recognise that. But if Sancho is the target they want to go after, then I will wait until the end of the window to judge it (no matter how foolish it seems). And we are trying for a LB, remember? We did look at Reguilon, but turned it down - rightly. There will definitely be back-ups - there were rumours with Alex Telles, we wll know later in the window.

My point is, we can react like this post the window getting closed. This is not an easy window by any means, and if it means having to wait until the latter stages to save some money, we need to put up with it this time around. Take Telles for example - at the opening of the window, Porto were demanding 30 Mn. Now, it seems that price has dropped significantly. So, every little bit counts.

And it's not like the club isn't working towards it. For the first time in a long time, it looks like they have looked at the squad and are actively trying to address the problems. Let's wait until the window closes before reacting in as big a fashion as that. Although, if we don't end up signing a LB/RW, I will be furious, mind you.

Why does Palace on the opening day always seem like a banana skin lol

Moyes did it with Strootman and Thiago (this was Strootman before his injuries). Thiago was apparently in disbelief when we didn't make a move - he waited, verified again and then moved to Bayern.

Also, there were conversations initiated by Fergie to move on Rooney and get in Lewandowski. We got Fellaini instead.

The appointment of Moyes for 8 months set us back years.

But but BUT ...... He was Ferguson's 'Chosen One!' ;)
To be fair, Guardiola and Ancelotti were sounded out first. Pep couldn't make out that there was an offer on the table (Scottish accent, I believe) and Ancelotti was unwilling to move. Sigh.

He left quite the present with Thiago but couldn't even accept that the prat.

Lol.

Yeah, of all the humongous mistakes you continue to make since Ferguson and Gill, David Moyes Football GENIUS! continues to be the standout head-scratcher.

I guess Utd fans won't like this theory,, but the only thing I can reason is Ferguson wanting to protect his legacy knowing full well Moyes was nowhere near experienced enough for a club the size of Utd.
