Best ever Manchester United goalkeepers

Spain Under-21 international David de Gea looks set to become the retired Edwin van der Sar's replacement at Manchester United after arriving in the city for a medical ahead of his proposed move from Atletico Madrid.

Here is a look at some former Old Trafford greats he will be hoping to emulate.

Peter Schmeichel (1991-99)

Regarded as one of Ferguson's best signings, the Denmark international won five Premier League titles in seven years, also being part of the side which won the 1999 Champions League and won the FA Cup three times. Earned a reputation as being the best goalkeeper to grace the Premier League era.

Edwin van der Sar (2005-11)

The Dutchman was already vastly experienced when he joined from Fulham approaching the twilight of his career and brought a calmness and consistency which ended years of failed attempts by Ferguson to find the new Schmeichel. Won four Premier League titles, one Champions League and voted best European goalkeeper three years running.

Alex Stepney (1966-78)

Kept 175 clean sheets in 539 appearances for United. Manager Sir Matt Busby hailed him as "the single most important factor" behind their First Division title win in 1967. Famously kept out Eusebio in the 1968 European Cup final to force extra-time, from where United went on to win the game. He also won the FA Cup once.

Harry Gregg (1957-66)

Busby spent a world-record fee for a goalkeeper on Gregg and his talent was in evidence at the 1958 World Cup when, although only reaching the quarter-finals with Northern Ireland, was named best goalkeeper ahead of Russia legend Lev Yashin. Probably best remembered for his heroics in the Munich air disaster just three months after he signed, returning to the burning plane to pull survivors free.

I have seen only 2 of these keepers, for me Great Dane, followed by VDS..

Antonio Valencia was substituted at half time last night in Ecuador's Copa America match vs Paraguay. Sprained the ankle
that he broke.

Ecuador's manager Reinaldo Rueda: "He (Antonio Valencia) could not stand or walk on it (his ankle) and we had to make a change."

hope its not serious :(

oh please dont be serious if so good job we got young but valencia was quality after returning from injury

A (not so) interesting fact about this...

Both of Valencia's injuries occured during 0-0 draws..

I can vouch for that - was watching the match and after some treatmen on the sidelines he was still having trouble walking and didn't go out at half time.

Gasperini is set to use his 3-4-3, and the talk is of possibly starting Alvarez (dont look at me like that, not my idea). Inter are in no rush to sell but they would be happy with the money and the freeing of wages, but that is for our thread

Yeah Mike, thats what. If Gasperini wants to play 3-4-3 then there are chances of Sneijder moving as he wont fit in that formation. But he also said Great players can adapt to position something like that. So there are chances but dont know what to make of his interview.

Yeah Wages part maybe true as they have to balance the books. They revenue is poor and they are in red..

Gasperini sees Alvarez as an important reinforcement, clearly he is seeing something there we havent, but he is not often wrong on that. Whether he stays or comes to us, Sneijder is going to have to adapt to a deeper role.

Meulensteen wants him very badly at the club

Wesley Sneijder would be 'perfect' signing, says Manchester United coach

Internazionale's Wesley Sneijder would be the "perfect" signing for Manchester United, according to Sir Alex Ferguson's first-team coach René Meulensteen.

United, who are still looking to replace Paul Scholes after his retirement, have long been linked with a move for the 27-year-old Holland international, who is rated at £35m.

Meulensteen told the Dutch magazine Voetbal International: "Wesley Sneijder would fit perfectly here. He is the most ideal player for us that I can think of.

"I don't say that because he is Dutch. I have been at Manchester United for a while, I know all the ins and outs of the team and I know that he would be a great reinforcement.

"The new Paul Scholes does not exist, just as there is not a new Roy Keane, but I cannot think of anyone more perfect for us than Sneijder.

"He is not a runner, but perfectly two-footed. He can run the game and puts the ball wherever he wants. To me, he seems a perfect addition to players like Hernández, Rooney, Park, Young, Valencia, Nani and Giggs. Plus, Wesley has plenty of experience in top football, of course.

"I don't know how his future is at Inter, of course – whether he is allowed to leave and whether we can pay him. But purely on the basis of his ability, I would say 'Get Sneijder'."

The midfielder is under contract in Italy until June 2015, and has also been linked with Manchester City.

When Meulensteen speaks, just have to listen to him. If he says Sneijder would be perfect signing for us, I will just say Yay. He knows team better than any bar SAF..

Did anyone notice that both of city's signings were holding their away kit. It seems they just can't get enough of .... RED!

.

M.E.N made a good point on this,
Although Meulensteen's words have not always come true, he was glowing in his praise for Ajax keeper Maarten Stekelenburg last season for instance after Edwin van der Sar had confirmed his retirement plans, it is hard to imagine such comments would be made without Ferguson at least being aware of them.

Maybe a smoke screen to sign other player?

he wanted Stekelenburg, and the two Gk coaches wanted De Gea and Neuer tbf, but it's a possibility...

I think once GK coach Steele said Stekelenburg is our number 1 target. One thing is sure, no one knows whats going on as none of the coaches are going to leak our plans..

Bail-storm judge makes U-turn over sentence given to Manchester United starlet Ravel Morrison

The judge at the centre of a controversy which threatens to turn the police bail system on its head has made a dramatic U-turn over his sentencing of a Manchester United starlet.
District Judge Jonathan Finestein fined teenager Ravel Morrison £600 in May after he pleaded guilty to criminal damage following a bust-up with his girlfriend.
But Morrison, from Timperley, was already the subject of a 12-month referral order for an earlier offence of witness intimidation. The court later discovered the fine caused the referral order to be automatically cancelled.
In a separate case, Distict Judge Finestein triggered a national legal storm when he ruled that the ‘detention’ clock continued to run while a suspect was on bail – not just when they were in custody.
Police have to charge or release suspects after four days. That means an end to the practice of releasing people on bail and calling them back for further questioning later without new evidence.
Morrison, 18, was brought back before Salford magistrates yesterday after the family of the witness intimidation victim complained about the fine.
District Judge Finestein told him that the fine was a mistake and would be quashed – and he could have his money back. But the footballer refused to accept the cash and instead asked for it to be donated to the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.
The fine was replaced with an absolute discharge, allowing the referral order to continue.
District Judge Finestein said: "Because the sentence was a genuine mistake, I think I would have the power to pass a different type of sentence."
He warned Morrison – one of United’s brightest hopes who scored to help his team win the FA Youth Cup in May – that the referral order was now back in place and he would face jail if he breached it.
Morrison had been told in January by District Judge Wendy Lloyd at Trafford Youth Court that he would be locked up for a year if he was convicted of another offence before the end of 2011 - but District Judge Finestein said the criminal damage offence was not technically a breach.
The national bail row triggered by District Judge Finestein – when he refused a routine application from GMP for a warrant of further detention of a murder suspect – is continuing. The Supreme Court yesterday dismissed a bid by GMP to suspend the controversial legal ruling and a full appeal by the force is now due to go ahead on July 25.
Emergency laws will be rushed through the Commons tomorrow and the Lords next week to reverse the decision amid fears the full appeal to the Supreme Court would take too long.

Wes Brown completed his move to Sunderland. Said Bruce was the main reason why he signed for Sunderland.

I will never forget his cross to Ronaldo in the 2009 CL final. Thank you for all the years and I wish Wes all the best in Sunderland, not at Man Utd's expense of course.

Looks like O'Shea deal is done and Gibson has offers from Sunderland and Stoke.

He just posted this up on Red Issue.
