The Manchester United Thread

Ricky, Manumad; I'll be clear on this once and once only. We wont be going down that road on this thread or any thread. It's not witty, or banter. And rising to it merely derails threads and leads to insults and other nonsense. I've already dealt with people for doing the same to Arsenal and Chelsea. Any more will be dealt with by infractions and bans if needed.

A lot of people I've spoken to have said that United won't finish in the top 4 this season - some have even said they won't get European places altogether! It honestly makes me laugh how fickle uneducated football 'fans' can be, United will still get 2nd or 3rd this season, even with their bad start.

You can definitely finish outside of the top 4. Its not exactly unrealistic scenario, the competition is just that strong this season.

There's no doubt in my mind that City have better squad, at least on paper.

Chelsea have Mourinho who's always challenging for the titles.

Arsenal are finally looking like serious contender, at least if they manage to stay injury free.

Spurs brought fuckzillion of players and they can only get better once AVB has some time to work with the squad.

And Liverpool are second in the table even playing without Suarez.

Lets be honest here, you're 3 points behind top 6 right now and all the teams i mentioned are going to score points pretty consistently throughout the season. United better start improving , and fast.

You assume they will pick up points consistently and United wont? United are 3 points off having played 4- of the top 6. They havent.

Arsenal always look like that at some point, then **** it up? Let's not jump to finite conclusions eh?

I mean if you're going to throw in all those points, lets not be selective, United havent finished outside the top 3 in the Prem era. See I can throw stuff like that round too, which as much or as little weight as the above.

Lol at Liverpool at second without Suarez. So what, Southampton and Everton are above City, that doesn't mean they will finish above them.

All the teams you mentioned had good start and there is every chance that they will implode. For example, Liverpool just won 1-0 thrice and all three times they were poor in the second half. Any decent day for the opposition that would have been just 3 points than 9.

ManUtd have so much room to improve, RVP is back, Rooney is looking in good form, Nani is getting run of games along with Kagawa. That four once clicked will create problems to any team in the league. Rafael is back and with him we look so much different team.

Tonight's match is a hard one - another potential banana skin.

We really need to show the kind of energy and commitment we showed vs LFC in the COC.

Additional spice for me is that the wife, being UKRAINIAN, supports SHAKTAR (almost made it to Donetsk as well but work commitments ballsed it up for me sadly).

Very tough game, would take a point.

Same here - though I really want us to show some spirit as per my above post, irrespective of the result (cos that would mean we are improving imho).

Every season, United are underestimated. Even as a Liverpool fan, I can't see us being as consistent as we have been so far, perhaps we will just clinch 4th - but we won't do much better than that. Spurs and City always look strong, but they've signed too many players in my opinion to be able to have a good season, and they always seem to underperform anyway (bar City's title win, maybe). Arsenal are always potentially dangerous, but again, they never seem to maintain their early-season form - it's happened for the last few years now. Chelsea will probably do well under Mourinho this season, and should win the league, but they lack a top striker and haven't been that great so far this season (a bit like United, but not as bad).

United will definitely get Champions League, I'm tipping them to finish 2nd/3rd. Moyes is clearly no mug, although he will need time to adapt, and despite what some people think, their squad is strong (bar midfield perhaps), and they have the experience to do it. It's like Arsenal last season, everyone said Spurs were stronger than them when they were having that bad run, but history does count for something!

You gonna win tonight Mike?
The Donbass Arena is a tough place to go, and Shakhtar fans are very passionate. United - Shakhtar and City - Madrid look to be two great games on paper, especially considering both United and Shakhtar's current form.

If there's one team that will give United's structure and midfield shape a thorough testing, it's Shakhtar. Going to be interesting tonight.

They were stronger with Mkhitaryan, Willian and Fernandinho though. Fair to say those three were the backbone of Shakhtar.

That's true. They're 3rd in their league at the moment, which is quite unusual for them - they're almost the Celtic of the Ukrainian league!

Aye, just happy we were not facing them last year with Henrik.

For the first and last, maybe, but despite Willian's effectiveness he wasn't a key player like the other two were. Moreover, they've got their Willian replacement in Taison, Alex Teixeira takes over from Henrik, and Fernandinho's been replaced by Fernando. They're insanely good at finding quality replacements, they really are.

Why are Shakhtar and Porto so good at finding talents/replacements. Wonder how much Jackson will cost in 2 years... and those Shakhtar replacements too. Business wise -- two of the best clubs in Europe.

Don't forget Dortmund!

9th game in a row we have failed to keep a clean sheet. We need to patch this leaky defense.
On a separate note, has anyone else heard the crazy rumour that Zaha has been having a relationship with Moyes' daughter? I thought it was quite funny weather there is truth in it or not.
