The Manchester United Thread

Personaly i'd think he dip in regardless of what happened to fletcher. This just makes things a bit worse. The last time this happened we spent well in jan... and went on to win 3 titles on the trot.

I think this will act as a trigger, but either way you're in for an exciting January transfer window, which is more than I can expect from us...

This wont be the trigger, bad injuries happen he doesnt jump because of one injury, if anything it will have been the last two months and europe

...he's also THAT stubborn. Having only 2 competent midfielders is a good way to, erm, 'encourage' him to add a new player.

But Cleverley will be back in January, and Anderson in february. So panic buying a midfielder would save us a month without Anderson. He'll buy because we actually need a midfielder(s).

That's a fair assessment, I guess, but without this injury he could've tried keeping **** together with the current squad, seeing as you are out of the CL, until the other midfielders are back to full fitness.

I never disagreed with that. I've said it before and agreed with those who said it before me. Yet no midfielder was added in the summer and so far Fergie had claimed he had 'no intention' of making moves in January - then again, coing from someone like him, this isn't necessarily true.

Before we were looking excellent with Cleverley/Anderson though, but then with Anderson dropping form/getting injured and Cleverley's persistent problems, it highlights and emphasises the struggles we have with no creative midfielder. Although I was disappointed with no one coming in after August ended, with the form we were in I thought we would be fine with Cleverley with Giggs filling in for rotation and any little niggles Cleverley got, we've just been unfortunate to be plagued with injuries in both defence and now midfield.

Mind, we don't know if he is looking at a midfielder in January, I sincerely hope so, but I extremely doubt Fletcher has had any effect on his decision. The Fletcher thing to the public is news, but not United. He has missed a lot of games against recently, and we called it a 'virus' to protect his medical privacy. He will already have been planned and accounted for.

he would have done it with the youth if that was the case. Thats how he is, for better or for worse, and in all fairness, the count is overwhelmingly towards the better.

No midfielder was added because he couldnt get any of the three he wanted

In which case Fletcher's illness may have had an influence in his decision (IF he decides to add a midfielder), although it'd be a decision taken quite some time ago rather than today.

again wouldnt he wouldnt buy a player for effectively two months.

think what Athe is trying to say is they were always going to buy a new midfielder(s) in January but now it's more likely that Fergie will splash the cash, which is probably true. Fletcher's illness isn't a primary reason to get a new midfielder(s) but it is another factor for Fergie to consider

Understand that, but i feel any real impact of fletcher's injury on the transfers would come at the end of the season, sadly this kind of thing can end careers.

Can anybody tell me how serious is his injury? I mean if it ends his career I will be just devastated as will every United fan who thinks he is good!

It's not an injury but an illness. To cut a long story short he's got diarrhea mixed with blood and his colon is pretty messed up which is quite painful. It can be treated through medication or surgical means, although the surgical alternative is pretty unpleasant and would probably be the end of his career as a footballer. As for the medication, wouldn't know up to what extent it can be used as he'll be taking a shitload of stuff and I'm not sure if all of them are 'legal' in football.

Amazing stuff, the internet.

Well the internet isn't that amazing. Could probably find pictures of this illness which wouldn't be so pleasant :@

The internet is pretty good. I never seem to see ***** mags left in hedges any more, how times have changed since I was 13.

Random question for United fans - if you were to get a player that plays similar to how Fletcher does for you, who would it be?

Im so sad about Fletcher :( I like him allot, hes passion for United while he plays... i wouldnt change him for no one...

Would have liked Vidal but now that is impossible. I would like Javi Martinez at United. I'm sure we will end up with none in this window. We wont sign anyone.

He will have to draw optimism from Lewis Moody I guess.

The injury problems we have/had this season is unreal.

Vidic - Missed first 2 months, now out for 1 year
Smalling - Missed close to 2 monts
Rio - Few niggling injuries
Rafael - Didn't even play single league game
Fabio - Missed few games
Valencia - Missed preseason and still lacking match sharpness
Young - Missed 2-3 weeks
Giggs - Missed few games
Anderson _ Will miss close to 3 months
Cleverley - Same as Anderson
Hernandez - Missed preseason and again missed few games. Now again out for 4 weeks.
Welbeck - Missed around 2 months.
Berbatov - Missed few weeks, not that he was ahead in pecking order.
Fletcher - Missed most of the season and now almost whole season.

Number of league starts for our players this season

Anderson - 8
Berbatov - 1
Smalling - 8
Hernandez - 9
Vidic - 6
Carrick - 4
Welbeck - 8
Rafael - 0
Cleverley - 5
Fletcher - 7
Valencia - 3

We have done very well to be just 2 points off top spot.
