Let's be honest, the only reason yourself and other United fans even mention City's wages is to cry and discredit them, because you know full well they'll be above you for the long haul soon enough, and it makes you feel better.

I just find it amusing that phrase "City above Utd for the long haul". Key players away on international duty, injuries still to surface, lower teams beating the bigger clubs (like Sunderland stunning City)........amusing how many people disregard other clubs and the effect they're going to have on the title race

Think both Billy and Sunil have made some points that are wide of the mark.

Firstly, money. Clubs have always spend hard, be it United, Leeds, Chelsea, Liverpool, City. Even Arsenal have spent some amount, but they are they exception to the last 20 years. Money doesnt bring you titles, but it gets you close in this league.

Same in La Liga, when the the two top are getting so much more money than their nearest competitors, the days of Valencia splitting the two seem far off. You only have to look back to the turn of the century to see the huge amounts of money Italian clubs were spending (with disastrous consequences)

There will be exceptions, but money on the whole makes the league go round.

As for City being above United for the long haul, they said the same about Chelsea... bit short sighted to make a judgement in either sense, certainly fair to say they will be round for a while, barring some disaster for their owners

Chelsea dominated the league when they got their huge cash injection, further strengthening my point. I don't understand what you're trying to prove to be honest. My point is that money brings success in the Premier League, and mostly football in general. You're disagreeing, but have been unable to back your point up with anything substantial.

I'm well aware of that. You seem to be missing the entire point that no team has spent to the extent of Chelsea, and now City, and been able to acquire such talented players as a result.

This might be because the Premier League attracts a higher standard of player than most, but it isn't the reason I want to focus on the Premier League for this particular topic. It's the most relevant to this discussion.

Just to reiterate my point: Money is the biggest factor of success in football in the modern game.

Thats strange. Thought it was how a player performs on the day/during the season that defines success. Money has a bit part obviously but guarantee success? Not in my opinion. Look at Liverpool. Look at City. Look at Chelsea. Nothing is guaranteed in this league at all. IMO

There are two ways you can follow, either spend like City, Chelsea, Madrid or have a long term vision like Barca and have a proper foundation for years. I know which teams are taking which path.

Arsenal a big exception in the the league because they have one of the best scouting systems in the world and a truly exceptional youth developer in Wenger.

Exactly. Money definitely helps, but it does by no means = success. Look at Blackpool, coming up last season with a tiny wage budget and only just missing out on staying up. Likewise, City, for all their millions, haven't won much yet.

Fergie WILL buy IF a top player becomes available. a 33 year old Frank Lampard is not the answer nor is buying some hobo from another league. Fergie gambled on Cleverley this season and injury has cost us badly. Personally I'd prefer to see Cleverley/Pogba/Morrison come through than spend £40m on someone with nothing to prove.

I've trusted Fergie for 25years, not going to stop now.

I would also like to see this players come through and have a huge impact but the fact remains, nothing is certain that these players will be the finished product that we want/need. We need to make a big signing in the midfield, someone who will play alongside these guys and make them better in the long run as well. I'd rather we make that big signing for £40m than trusting in youth with the slight possibility of them not making the grade.

That's what I meant. I like to see youth players come through as much as the next person but I believe we need to sign someone like a Martinez as you mentioned just to really make that position stronger.

I would be very happy with Vidic/Evra like transfers, allowing them to bed in for the rest of the season then they can perform at world class level in the next season.

If they're good enough, they're good enough. You never win anything with kids though, right?

I don't see how Tiote or one of the Benders, improvements though they may be, are necessarily worth splashing out on. Newcastle won't let Tiote go easily after his recent contract extension, and the Benders are young and inexperienced.
