The Manchester United Thread

I don't think its a problem, that wasn't the way English football was played at that time and it was very successful.

Not that sucessful, certainly not internationally, or that much continentally. That fact is that was the way we should have been playing, or at least our own brand of it.

Spanish football was always more successful than English. Even Italians have better record than English.

Scholes was highly rated throughout his career, its only with the emergence of Barca few journos started wanking about him. He was always world class player and one of the best ever in the league.

I don't think it is, i'm a believer of use the tactics that suits you not follow everyone else. Lets be honest, before 2008 Spain didn't really do much better than England in major tournaments and English football was more dominating (with the exception of the galaticos for a few years). Why should we have changed?

With the exception of 2005-09, when was English football ever dominant? They were always behind Spain and Italy.

If Xavi himself admits that Scholes is better than him then surely that tells you something

Xavi isen't as egotistical as the likes of Pele and El Diego and isen't going to say "im much better than Schoels" is he. Its all about personal opinions backed up by stats.

We had our own way which is all about the passion and physicality, never helped us at International level but Spain wearn't much better than us until 08. They went down one route and succeeded as we failed. We need to dust ourselfs off and try again, why copy other peoples ideas?

Scholes was forced out of the England side because of a lack of appreciation for him, despite him being one of the best midfielders England has ever produced, and the best of his generation by far.

Neither of those are a playstyle, merely aides to a team. Especially passion.

Because our current ideas are very flawed. The fact is we have the ability to marry pace and power, with control and passing.

Spain were better than us before 08, underachievers like us, but still a better side.

Im not doubting he is one of the best i totally agree. Im just saying i don't find it a problem that its taken so long for people to give him the recognition he deserves. In most of these cases its "you don't know what you got till its gone" anyway and the same was with Scholes.

Exacly the dates you said lol, when English football was dominant it was really on top in my eyes.

or he could say nothing at all? The fact he publically says that Scholes is superior speaks volume.

We should copy others ideas because ours just doesn't work. The game is a lot less physical than it used to be and as for 'passion' every side has it, we can't base a tactic around it

Scholes was forced out of the England side because of a lack of appreciation for him, despite him being one of the best midfielders England has ever produced, and the best of his generation by far.

It was mainly because at that moment in time the two stand out midfielders in Europe were Lampard and Gerrard who's club form merited a starting place for England.

I agree, but that was the way we played and we had a bit of success in terms of club teams.

I wouldn't even say they were better than us, mearly on the same level. Barcelona but a youth plan in place 15odd years ago which worked. We need to find a way which works for us .

Why can't we try something else, genuinly copying other peoples idea's never seems to work. You have to find your own identity and if that means hitting a few walls then so be it.

They were definitely better than us.

Its not as if Spain invented the type of game, it was Dutch style. They copied it and with few years of ground work they have dominated the game like no one else have ever done.

Give me Scholes and one one or neither of those, than both of them and no Scholes any day. England has always cried out for a playmaker, and we threw away one of the best ever in Scholes in order to fit Gerrard and Lampard into a single team, a philosophy that never did or will work.

If, as Messi says, an Englishman is being mentioned in La Masia as a role model (or teacher) - he is doing something right.

No, please dont compare Lampard and Gerrard to Scholes. They stood out in England because we as a nation prized goals and heart on the sleeve passion above anything else.

Where did i compare them?? I said it was one of the reasons he was over looked because at that time Gerrard and Lampard were at their best.

Yes, but you're saying that's the reason Scholes didn't play, thus comparing them. As a footballer, Scholes is better. Those two were selected and looked upon as better for the reasons Mike mentioned.

I've just seen someone advocate trying again with the same playing style that has failed us so spectacularly recently.

Close to tears.
