The Manchester United Thread

He would be 'useless'. The only way Valencia could do something is that Ronaldo stayed on left flank. Because SAF probably knew that he's going to switch places, Valencia would be in no mens land. Reason why Kagawa and Welbeck were better solution than Valencia is they versatility, ability to switch places and play in the middle ( Kagawa).

I was thinking more along the lines of stopping Coentrao and giving him something to think about going the other way. The fullbacks and Jones were doubling up well on Ronaldo.

And then we would lose player in centre of midfield and Khedira and Alonso would have field day. This is just for defense. We would lose even more in attack.

That's just the media's bollocks though mate, i slated Hart immensely at the weekend and actually have questioned his kicking for a long while now. I think fans blame the players at the right time, i slated Cech for his parried save which led to Newcastle's 2nd goal the other week as if it was Turnbull other CFC fans would have gone mental at him. Yes i think the media have certain agendas obviously but most of us me included do not give two ***** what the media say these days

De Gea has saved us more points than lost them, just as Hart and Cech have for their teams. None deserve stick at all, mistakes happen in all walks of life and I think most of the abuse De Gea has been given is unjust.

The media try to sensationalise everything now, not just football. I'd rather forge my own opinions.

They didn't have a field day though did they? Jones and Carrick screened the back four all night while the supporting striker (Kagawa/Welbeck/Rooney) hassled their midfield and stopped Xabi Alonso dictating the game. Khedira was offered space a number of times because he is by far their least creative player.

Yeah and so do i and firmly believe one day newspaper journalism will die because of the bullshit they print. As i said he deserves full praise for tonights performance.

Agreed. Khedira had an odd game, way more attack than defence primarily because he didn't have anyone to defend against. Carrick was deep, Welbeck was too high, Jones was on the other side of the pitch, and Kagawa was being marked well by Xabi.

Think United's midfield actually didn't do as badly as everyone expected, despite being outplayed. They just had to contend with the fact that Madrid's midfielders were so superior in terms of pure talent, and they did it reasonably well.

If newspaper journalism does one day die, it will not be because of the 'bullshit' they print. Frankly I think if it's bullshit you shouldn't even mention it; doing so only validates it as news.

Why wont he come home?

Also the game and result. Was a good performance from United. Had a couple of good chances that should have been put away, and defensively were quite solid, considering who we were up against.
The result is a little scary. Real Madrid only needs to score one goal at Old Trafford to negate our goal, and you have to think they would score with the players they have. So it'll be a nervy night at Old Trafford :(

ps. I missed Ronaldo's goal and celebration. Did he actually celebrate or what?

With grace he declined to celebrate his goal. I love that guy

The referee had a shocker last night and Is it just me or Sergio Ramos rolls around like a typical Barca player with a slightest contact? Raphael Varane should have been sent off, and does anybody know why in the name of god was the match ended 10 seconds earlier? Anyway very good away performance in the second half. In the first half I guess the occasion got to the players whereas we were more composed in the second half. Jones made some good defensive work at the end and that's why everybody is praising him. How good was welbeck?Probably his best performance in an United shirt. De Gea has silenced his critics though...

I think it ended up balancing out in the end. I have to say, Jones seemed to get away with a lot of shoving and shoulder barging last night, which was weird because numerous Madrid players were penalised for the same sort of offence.

All in all though, I can't believe that the first thing you have to say after that great game is something about the ref.

Decent game I thought, Rooney tracking was unreal, worked really hard all night.

Welbeck played very well too. Shame Giggsy didn't try and have a pop when he was through though!

I agree that Sergio Ramos was a disgrace. He's one of the dirtiest players out there and he makes an absolute meal out of anything and everything. Very poor sportsmanship.

I thought the ref did very well. Could have given Varane red but even on the replays I'm not certain that there was too much contact. Jones wasn't over-physical but some ref's on the continent would have pulled him up for some of the more robust challenges, so I'm quite happy the ref was a sensible one.

Welbeck was our outfield man of the match, he done everything well and I like how all his critics have suddenly gone all quiet.

They would probably have if Valencia played. That was my point. Welbeck and Kagawa were much better solution than Valencia.

Kagawa was not very good last night... once again!

Giggs should have started, he holds up the ball so much better than Kagawa.. he got dispossessed a lot

I don't really see how they would have to be honest, as he would have done the same job defensively as Rooney did. Perhaps the fact the Rooneyand Kagawa can keep the ball better influenced the decision to start both over Valencia.

Still, it is anyone's game though, I think we shown them too much respect and I am glad Fergie noticed this by saying after that we stood off way to much, which we did.

Also I still find it concerning when we are Manchester United and are playing two strikers as wing options against Real Madrid. In my opinion we should of took the game more to them. Having said that RVP's second miss after he hit the bar was really awful, if he got any solid contact it was 2-1.

Finally I think Varane was lucky to stay on the pitch, he clearly held Evra back and the ref bottled it because it would of been a red card, but it was a clear foul, Evra would have no reason to go down when he is through on goal.

Does anyone know who won the man of that match award? I mean I know Jones, Welbeck. Evans, maybe Ferdie and De Gea(what a superb display he had last night),but who actually won it?
