The Manchester United Thread

Of course his foot is high is trying to control a ball coming down from about 30 feet in the air. He certain didnt stud him either. He is in fact watching the ball the entire time, with every aim of controlling the ball.
his studs firmly planted into his chest, intentional or not :S He may been aiming to control the ball but he didn't, he fully got the player. Didn't everyone criticise Howard Webb for the fact he didn't send De Jong off in the world cup final for a similar incident? Obviously not exactly the same but he was sent off for studding Alonso in the chest

agreed! if someone challenged RVP when he attempted that overhead volley, RVP should also get a red card?

please, a red card was the LAST thing I expected to see from that!

If we lost fair and square and we deserved the red card, I can take it, I can take things like a man! but to lose because of such a blatant mistake from the ref is just infuriating..

No, Joel is right. By that argument, Lopez should have been sent off for missing the ball and hitting Vidic in the face?
I don't think I saw that. But surely there's a degree to what can be accidental and just be a foul and what can be accidental but is dangerous and deserving of a red. That was dangerous by Nani

if Nani turned to look around to see if another player was coming, then was looking at the player himself and did what he did, **** yes that deserves a straight red card! It was an accident and completely unintentional...

sorry, how are you meant to control a ball that is 1.5m in the air without pointing your toes up to control the ball hence having your studs showing?

so was Lopez's punch! double fisted into Vidics' temple! I think the ref gave Real a free kick as well!

so what you are saying is that if a player intentionally goes for the ball but makes a dangerous attempt (i.e Nani/Lopez) they deserve a red card?

a tad hypocritical if you ask me

It has to be serious foul play or violent conduct.

His boot top were also under his arm, not studs in chest. He isnt running at Arbeloa, he doesnt even know that he is there. Its a foul and a yellow, but there is no foul play for that to be red.

De Jong saw where Alonso was, he was looking at him, and then kicked him when the ball wasn't where he was aiming at. Not that similar

I believe we are going round in circles thus pointless to continue (also have some work to do). I see what you guys are saying and have made me think about it more. I originally thought it was an easy decision, straight red. But you guys make good points. Maybe a red was a little harsh but I don't blame the ref for making that decision and I probably would have done the same in his position. I still believe it was a red, albeit a harsh one.

I'm actually known on these forums and am not a troll whereas I have no clue who the **** you are

Lets stud people in the chest and say its ok because it was unintentional :D

you dont need to know who i am i have no clue who you are but to say that was a red please

On the angle from the back, it even seems as if Nani tries to pull his leg in to himself so he doesn't make as much contact

when he saw the player tried to pull out as much as he could as Joe said.. he never even knew the player was there!

Great acting skills by Arbeloa as well..... seriously sad way to go out.

Never a red.. and for a game of this magnitude? ref was wasnt considerate.. why would a player even do that? destroyed the game.. dont wanna be a conspiracy theorist but that Man utd have never won with ref on our watch

Well, if you say during the last three years because of the bi polarization of "world football" in the sense that these two stoodges get 90% of the attention, yes I would agree, however it's logical to assume such a thing taking into account the financial benefits of such event. Of course as a Milan supporter I am in no ways desiring such thing to happened but merely being cautious, a warned man is worth two. I don't think Barcelona are "finished" as many people out there seem to proudly say, but if Milan doesn't hold a 2 goal lead (they're italians ffs!) then something is definitely wrong.
You are a cool poster.

But I hear this **** every year

Meh, red was very very harsh. Yellow would have been fair, it was accidental but studs were very high and he was in the air so there is always the potential for harm.

Anyway onto the game, Madrid were terrible. Lopez and Varane are the only reason United didn't win that with ease. Credit to United they kept playing well with 10 men but the sending off along with Modrics great shot really just took it out of them for a good 5-10minutes which is all Madrid needed for the second.

Expected Rooney to come on earlier but still, poor sending off and Lopez saving near everything cost United.

Fixed it for you.

Never a red.
Come on Dunc why you gotta be a hater :'(
So you get sent off for leaving the ground with 2 feet, with no intention of harming the player and eyes firmly on the ball, and are sent off because it's a dangerous challenge that could harm the player. Why is Nani studding someone in the chest, albeit unintentionally, and potentially seriously injuring the player suddenly maybe a yellow and certainly a harsh red?
