The Manchester United Thread

Guardian reporting Man Utd bidding for Fellaini and Baines in a "£28m Deal consisted of £16m for midfielder and £12m for left-back". With the deal rejected as being insulting; supposedly rejected over the weekend and coming out today.

Yeah, 12 mil for the best left back in the league? Not happening.

Back on topic..... this midfield hunt is getting beyond funny now. I still don't understand why we need an ageing Baines for LB when we already have Evra (Don't get me wrong I am a huge fan of him, but bear in mind we also have Buttner/Fabio as well).

Why has it taken until now make this bid and the nearer deadline day comes the harder it shall get!

Baines is 28, hardly ancient, and the reason why he'd be better than Evra is because... well, he IS better. Way better. Better defensively and far far better going forward, but I don't think United's valuation of him is anywhere near Everton's, and I think the money should be better spent on a midfielder.

Like Mike. somewhat drunkenly said in the pub the other day, "The perfect player for United would acctshualy be Ashley Westwood".

We've learned fro our mistakes when we bought best english winger from AV for 5m more.

Shows the dire state of English football when somebody refers to Ashley Young as the "best English winger". :|

Yeah, except 'best English winger' wasn't exactly a category that had much competition at that point. You had Walcott from two years ago, Aaron Lennon still being Aaron Lennon, Adam Johnson looking flaky but promising for City and... well, that was about it. Compare that to today's 'best left back in the league', where Baines is competing with Cole, Evra, Clichy, Gibbs and even the likes of Rose, Shaw, Enrique, Davies, etc.

Thanks for the money though!

I said ageing not ancient.... you're drunk.... don't blame Mike! ;)

Pretty sure Downing was rated higher than Young at the time of sale, tbf.

Yeah well that's just a word then innit? EVERYONE's 'ageing'. ******* Javi Martinez is ageing, dunno why Munich bought him! ;)

The word ageing connotes the person being of a rather advanced age, for whatever reason, and 28 isn't too old. It's in his prime. He's got another three or so years before he starts declining, and even then he'd still be effective.

Pretty sure he wasn't, since Downing had had one good year whereas Young had been producing consistently for half a decade or so. That's reflected in the fact that Liverpool tried for Young first and then when he laughed in their faces and went to United instead, they settled for a (somehow, lol) more expensive Downing.

Besides. Even if you did somehow rate Downing as being better, I can tell you that as a Villa follower who watched both, Young was and is better, and every Villa fan rated him as being such.

Was he on the same stuff as Fergie when he bought Bebe?

Sambuca does funny things to him, but this was before that. He is right, to be fair. Carrick is Westwood's idol. It's not Villa's fault we have a promising crop of young defensive-minded midfielders. :)

Just going based on the fact he played more often for England at that time, and he was voted Aston Villa's player of the season the year he left.. But, whatever.

They have both been awful since their transfers, though. Fair play to Villa for milking £40m out of them.

Yeah, one season in which he edged out Young in productivity does not equal them being rated the same or even Downing being a better player. Young was and is a better player, no two ways about it.

Well, technically speaking Baines is going to be 29 within four months. So while I'll agree 12m offer is very low, chances are Everton are heavily overvaluing him. Full backs usually decline pretty quick, Baines has 2-3 seasons at current "CA" within him, tops.

He was back then, and the saddest part, he probably still is.

As much as I, unwillingly, admit that Baines is bttr lb thn Evra, I also think he isn't that much of a upgrade. And he's probably worth more than 12m. And I'm sceptic towards any Brittish player that comes from AV.

Last part was about Westwood.

Overvaluing how? I mean, he's arguably our best player, plus, no amount of money would get us a replacement of Baines' level. There's probably but a handful of left backs in the world that are better than him and none would join a club that's not in Europe. It's not a matter of "overvaluing" a player, Everton just don't want to sell and it'd take a huge offer to change that.
