The Manchester United Thread

I don't think he fits in with the players we now have around him. I also think that Januzaj/Nani are both better wingers than Rooney.

Fellaini isn't up to speed. That's the issue.

As it is right now, personally think our best XI has Rooney in midfield - though that won't happen.

I'm just going
to make it clear, before I say what I'm going
to say, that I'm completely impartial to all of
this and have no preference of either Fergie
or Moyes. I also disagree with people who
believe United are in a genuine crisis,
because it isn't as bad as a lot of people
think. They're 8th, which isn't too far away
from 4th - I still personally believe they will
finish 2nd/3rd.
I have to disagree with you with using "we
have to play against stronger teams" as an
excuse. Yes, the start of this season seems
very open and with a lot of teams improving,
the competition is getting stronger. However,
I wouldn't say that's a valid excuse for
justifying why United are where they are -
the improvement of other teams does not
warrant a 7-places-drop!
I've always rated Chicharito, and I thought he
should've been played more in previous
seasons as well as during this season - but I
agree, people can't use it as a reason to
criticise Moyes when they didn't use it
against Fergie.
First off all, I wasn't making any excuses. But that is the fact. A lot of clubs got stronger, while we have pretty much the same squad, squad that won EPL last season indeed.

Yeah rite, cos really we ve been playing with real passion and fire, imagination and an obvious tactical plan (supported by helpful/obvious substitutions) and the only reason we cant win even against patently worse squads/teams is that we are unlucky!

I actually happen to think that these "get a grip" type of calls are what will harm us most ultimately. Cos in the current climate where a lot of teams around us are improving/showing real guts it wont take long to become Liverpool!! (and yes I know where they currently are in the standings!).

Our squad does need improving but we ARE much better than what we ve been showing since MOYES came so it has to be him and his conservativism/fear of any risk taking.
like i said get a grip

I thought this at the start of the season mate, if Utd signed Ozil and played him in behind RVP with Rooney sitting along side Carrick then it could work. But as you state Rooney's problem with Utd was that he didn't want to play in midfield.

I never thought Fellaini was what was needed for Utd personally.

He is only half the answer, we still need creative mobility in the midfield. We need a player in the mould of Modric. And they do not come cheap. Club needs to take it on the chin and go back for Herrera.

If Rooney wanted to be a CM we wouldnt have bought Ozil. Kagawa would have started every game. But I see what you mean

Yeah, I'd agree with this. I do feel for Kagawa/Zaha in a world cup year though, to a lesser extent Zaha due to his position in international football at the moment, but certainly Kagawa would surely be raring to generate form and play as the creator.

In a totally unrelated issue, part of the reason Moyes gets so many people questioning his skill is that this is the first season where Utd have looked vulnerable due to the manager change.. you drop points, then team look more vulnerable, and opposing teams tried harder. You look at the confidence of some Utd teams under Ferguson and you could see the opposition reading this and barely even trying, it is no coincidence you managed to sew up the title with lots of uninspiring wins last season with the side being ruthless and giving the opposition no chance whatsoever. Perhaps once Moyes manages to get that sort of spirit back to the side, then opposing teams are going to go back to "****, Utd next week!" instead of relishing it as a chance to cause Moyes problems.

Until then, with the midfield being neglected since perhaps 2008, it is going to involve a lot of heavy lifting done by players unsuitable for their roles. The side definitely needs a CM comfortable in possession who can make something happen.

So, Evra's leaving at the end of contract. He says its personal. Well done Moyes, ******* Baines and overrated English players.

You can't exactly blame this on Moyes, Baines would have been an upgrade to Evra and is, in pure form terms, much the superior player at the moment. I do agree joint-bidding for Baines and Fellaini for 28m is almost as comical as bidding 20m for Fabregas, and for those the manager must be culpable since I cannot believe he had zero input... but you can't fault the manager for trying to sign players which the club is short of.

A link to the Independent article where he states nothing about Moyes, just that he wants to leave the club, and most likely accept a decent pay day somewhere in France whilst he still is able to attract a move?

No, I refuse your common sense and I'll even blame Moyes for Ronaldo signing new contract with RM.

I tried, but was to lazy to study for exam.
Seriously now, I'm going to miss Evra, such a great player he is/was for us. And now we have another worry on our mind, findinf replacement for Patrice. I really hope it wont be Baines. 25M for 29yo full back is bad buissness, especially when he's not that good. Luke Shaw? Can we trust 20 yo SD to take Evras shoes? I would like Coentrao, since Fabio is probably going to leave. This was bad time to announce something like this Pat, and I can't ignore the feeling its part od Moyes' LB pursuit. Justified pursuit had to be said.

Evra, much as I love him for his commitment and what he has given us over the years is on the wane (due to age) so him going is not such a bad thing as long as we get a good replacement (or even seriously try FABIO who I actually think that techincally is a more balanced player than his brother).

On Evra's commitment here's an anecdote (told by him): When he first arrived in Manchester and was looking for a house he specified with the estate agents that he wanted one near a church cos he wanted to visit it every day and thank god for playing for UTD. This is what *I* would have done also if I played for us and even if he was exaggerating it still made me love him that little bit more!

Tbh, this might just be public now, but I very much get the feeling the club already knew this, hence the the more franctic chase for Baines/Coentrao. The club has been trying to sign Evra on for over a year now.

It's not just about on the pitch though, his manner off the pitch is so important. Natural leader. We will miss that more.

There's fewer and fewer left in your team now from the Ferguson glory years. Ferdinand, sure, Vidic, yes. Rooney? Eh, maybe. Giggs, sorta, just by being the legend he is. Past those four (three of whom are on the wrong side of 30)? It's rather debateable. Fletcher, but he's out indefinitely.

Evra's been brilliant for us, will miss him a lot. But Fabio is miles behind Rafael now, and as Mike said pretty the club knew about it already, Fabio probably did as well and he still requested to leave so I imagine we have someone lined up already. I'd love to see us go in for Alex Sandro of Porto. Baines would be a great short term solution, but we don't have anyone coming through at LB that could be a first team player in the future and we would almost certainly be paying more than he is worth.

This is my single biggest worry, far more than the creative mid we need. Replacing that level of leadership is very hard. Which is why I was furious about Herrera, as he is noted for having have that ability ( as well as being a bit of a filthy tackler ;) )

Plus Baines, good as he is, is hardly a spring chicken .
