The Manchester United Thread

I am supporting the best interest of the club, but I am still struggling to see the logic of blowing ?37m just because it's "JUAN ******* MATA".

I'm struggling to see the logic of blowing all our cash reserves on mediocre players because someone hits the panic button over half a bad season. Who cares if they're an improvement on now? We're supposed to be aiming to be challenging on all fronts. I'd rather us show a modicum of patience and prepare for that situation rather than load up on average players on big contracts that we can't offload and doing a Liverpool. It makes a **** ton more economic sense to use our money on actually world class players than burn it on producing slight improvements in our midfield, because hey ho, anyone's an improvement on our midfield right now. We're supposed to be aiming to have a world class midfield that can actually compete in a reasonable period of time. Not aiming for any midfielder who's "an improvement" because it isn't hard to improve on ground zero.

-------------RVP
Kagawa/januzaj -- Rooney -- Mata
----- Carrick ------Fellani

What would be wrong with that

Only way it makes sense is if Moyes wants to play 4-3-2-1 surely? That or 4-diamond-2

If/when Mata arrives, shed a tear for Shinji Kagawa, would you?

Should still be in rotation. I said in the summer that I thought Mata is the exact type of player who would get more from Kagawa. At the moment we have Kagawa on one side, always looking to up the tempo and create space with his elegant flicks and tricks. And then we have Tony V on the other side, who's current only plan is to strike the ball with the might of Thor in the general direction of the box.

Agree Mata and Kagawa link up and rotation would be scary!

Even so, I'd rather spend that on Vidal or Marchisio or Gundogan or Reus, a player who we would actually need and suit us.

Only Marchisio could even possibly happen now in truth. Even if we could tempt any of the other 3 they would never move in Jan/ Mata is an odd one because of the world cup. Ditto Marchisio, only he is juve through and through which makes it harder.

That's what puzzles me the most. If Moyes is willing to blow out 37m for Mata, why in the name of christ he turned away 40m offer for Ozil in the summer? Not only club would be in a completely different position now, but most importantly this decision ended up turning Arsenal into legitimate title contender. Huge huge mistake. One that I think Ferguson wouldn't have made - old fox would have gone balls deep if such a bargain opportunity for world class player presented itself.

Mata is far more comfortable outwide than Ozil is.... Mata also covers for the fact the club is increasingly unsure about Rooney staying. Amazed no one has brought this point up.

40 mill and he's all yours. Cannot turn that sort of money down. Still don't think its what Utd need bud hay ho.

Jose in disguise. I think its a statement + club are increasingly worried about Rooney. Still need a CM though.

Do you really think this Mata thing will happen? Even though Sky Sports News and a whole **** load of other reports are reporting the story. I still have serious doubts it will happen and Jose will sell Mata to us, surely he isn't that stupid and is bitter over Rooney?

Exactly this. It lets the club sort out a Rooney replacement and makes it easier for the fans to accept they have a top replacement in the mid. Also allows for Rooney to play up top if Rooney stays and RVP remains crocked. I wouldn't want him on the right wing as he's defensively not going to offer a lot of protection for Rafael, but it's certainly a top player and would fund Chelsea's new striker they've been after. Win-win.

I think he would, Mata wants to play for the WC squad, Jose wants the money, and also it'd help him if Man Utd can take some points off the chasing pack. His Chelsea side is defensively strong, so perhaps it's also realising Utd have a long way to go to rebuild to be a threat to Chelsea in terms of squad strength.
