The Manchester United Thread

To the above, Sterling would of gone for similar to Martial (somewhere around £40 million); but being as QPR were owed £9 or so million for their take, that's why Boston held out to cover that.

But the initial point was relative.

Continue on.

Edit: others got there first.

Florentino clown simply couldn't keep his Jabba like mouth and blaming United for the failure of the deal publicly. That's funny. Sooo funny I could smash his face 32 kg kettlebell.

Also if we see the recent examples,

Ox - His only experience was playing in 3 division and Arsenal paid 15 Million pounds for a 18 year old.
Walcott - He played 20 odd games in championship but Arsenal paid 12 Million pounds for 16-17 year old player.
Pato - Played 20 odd games in Brazil but Milan paid 16 Million pounds for a 18 year old player.
Lucase - 45 Million pounds/Euros for a 20 year old from Brazilian league

Also on these rising fee's, more and more money is coming into football, smaller clubs are able to afford to hang on to players because they have higher cash reserves (TV deal etc). 10 Years ago Everton would have sold and probably for the lower bids and not the 40m that got rejected. As more teams become cash rich this will probably happen more and that is not even going into cash behemoths like united or sugar daddy clubs like PSG

Who's the last guy? Moura I presume.

Walcott went for 9-10m in the end after the tribubal ruling.

Moura is comparable due to the high end/record proce paid but he had 3 seasons (70+ games) and was widely known and chased, the other although played a similar amount of games, went for far less than a record fee. Pato had aleady played and scored at the world cup, He was the proverbial wonderkid of Brazilian football at the time.

I think its a combination that Martial was just 'not on the radar' and record fee, has created a perfect storm of 'who the/what the.. " :)

I havent been in football for so long time and also havent looked closely to Van Gaal. But can someone point out youngsters Van Gaal have bought that turned out to be world class? Or youngsters form his academy brought into the first team?

His Ajax team was full of class players and mostly from Ajax academy. Players like VDS, Seedorf, Kluviert, De Boer, Edgar Davids.

Then at Barca players like Xavi, Puyol, Iniesta, Valdes.
At Bayern; Alaba, Muller.

Not all players were played very much. For some he gave their debuts and for some he trusted them a lot and played a lot.

Walcott - He played 20 odd games in championship but Arsenal paid 12 Million pounds for 16-17 year old player.

Yeah, plus "On 8 May 2006, Walcott was surpisingly named in Sven-Göran Eriksson's squad for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, despite having only made 13 appearances in senior football and none in the Premier League."

Yeah Lucas.

10M or 12M, doesn't make difference. You got the point right, risky transfer for a guy who didn't even complete full season in Championship.

Lucas might have played 3 seasons but it was all in Brazilian league and the money paid was just huge. Not sure if that's even debatable and it was risky move. Thing is not only PSG but United also made a bid of 30 Million pounds but PSG out bid us. Also he didn't represent Brazil in all youth groups like Martial did for France.

Re Pato, he was signed for Milan in 2007 as a 18 year old and his Brazil debut was in 2008. When Pato moved to Milan, he played only 27 games for first team.

Re your last point, "not on the radar". Not sure I agree with that. Just because a regular football fan is not aware of it or media didn't pick it up doesn't make it any worse.

He 23 games for Southampton in the championship before Arsenal. What does his England call up have to do with it?

Pato - Club World Cup - My bad.

Appearance wise it does IMO, in relation to 36million, on a player you have to google in this day and age, just makes it appear stranger. Most players at 19 are chased, given a tour, touted, invited to train, rumoured, tweeted, photo'd, etc etc.. I think the out of the blue aspect of this, even if they now say they watched him for a year, just adds to the 'huh' factor attached to this.

With the England call-up I just wanted to reflect on the fact that even if he was a kid back then managers trusted him. And imho 10 years ago 12 million pounds was a relatively big sum of money. And this time please don't start throwing other 10+ million transfers from that period at me. :)

Surely this is what everybody was thinking and the fact that a 17 yo kid was selected over Darren Bent, Andy Johnson and Jermaine Defoe gave them stroke instantly. :D

But Martial was not complete unknown. Chelsea, Barca were interested in him and there are reports that Barca wanted him as Pedro replacement next season.

Just because we didn't hear or knew about player doesn't mean no one did.

He played very well against Valencia in UCL Qualifier few weeks back.

And in UCL against Arsenal last season where he tore them a new one, ironically no one remembers.

For a 19 year old to be performing in CL on the biggest stage at club level and 'no one knows them' is a bit laughable how he classes as an unknown.

Looking at it from the point of view of those fans who didn't know (the majority) who he is, it appeared worse than it might be.

The story should have been "Man U beat Barca to Monaco Wonderkid" - rather than "£36mil on this kid youve never heard of, but we have trust us" it might have been read better. :)

Hopefully he pans out as he did on my FM game... scored 10 in his first 8. (Sent off in the derby though)

Good international recap for us last night.

Wilson scored a goal for England U21. He should be getting a good chance this season with our options at the moment.

Blind played excellently at LB for Holland and for me, just like Rojo, is his best position. Depay also played.

Darmian was voted man of the match by whoscored for Italy. We all know about this guy by now, other players start at an average rating of 6, he starts at a 7.

Yeah, agree with the sentiments. It's all about media and how they portray the deals.

Thats it, thats should make him a known name. great in a first leg win at Arsenal, gash in the 2nd leg in a 2-0 loss and a UCL qualifier. Hes still an unknown.

But what more can a 19 year old do to be 'known' by fans devoted to following English clubs than performing in the CL with some stand out performances? The answer is really, nothing.

Just can't wait for the next game. Will be interesting to see who all will play.
