The Manchester United Thread

But what more can a 19 year old do to be 'known' by fans devoted to following English clubs than performing in the CL with some stand out performances? The answer is really, nothing.

That would be A stand out performance, not performances... He was Monaco's best player in the Valencia 1st leg. He wasn't the stand out or close to being MOM in any of the others.

So from the English fans perspective, he was good in the first arsenal game and a bystander for the 2nd.

I can't believe how accurate Scouseinthehouse's assessment on Darmian was.

Thats it, thats should make him a known name. great in a first leg win at Arsenal, gash in the 2nd leg in a 2-0 loss and a UCL qualifier. Hes still an unknown.
The "known" names of Arsenal were all gash in the loss to monaco

On the 'unknown' thing, I'd honestly never heard of Martial until talking to a good French friend (or is he imaginary. Who knows? *Rolls eyes) last summer as he was filling me in on the great young talent the Portuguese coach was assembling in Monte Carlo.

Probably still wouldn't be really aware where it not for that and the monster move. Shrugs.

Good international recap for us last night.

Wilson scored a goal for England U21. He should be getting a good chance this season with our options at the moment.

Blind played excellently at LB for Holland and for me, just like Rojo, is his best position. Depay also played.

Darmian was voted man of the match by whoscored for Italy. We all know about this guy by now, other players start at an average rating of 6, he starts at a 7.

He's been doing it for years. Strangest part was him taking so long to break in for the National side. he was so **** good in 13-14

I guess knowing a player comes down to what you watch and how you watch it. Look at the number of people suprised about Darmian, it's not like he played against us in the world cup and gave us a trouncing doing the flank... oh wait.

In the grand scale of football right now I guess you could say Martial is unknown but that doesn't really say much because virtually every single hot prospect right now fits into that category who doesn't have a huge fee over his head.

I have no doubts whatsoever Wenger would of been all over this like a rash had he been at the right price for him, aka cheaper.

I honestly don't think it's that bigger gamble than Sterling, Sterling has done it in PL and had one standout season admittedly with Liverpool but hasn't really done much else to warrant such a huge price tag. (Other than being English). Is an England international but given how poor the squad is atm says very little.

Martial contributed to 24% of Monaco's goals last season and has shown glimpses on the biggest stage in CL. Martial is competing in a much tougher squad and pool of players internationally if you ask me. Has been called up over Lacazette for France now.

Probably get slated for this, but it's my opinion. ^.-

Why aren't you ranting? It's freaking me out..

:P

Then again bidding £60m for Reus wouldn't make me feel much more comfortable, giving his injury record and everything I reckon that in itself would of been a huge gamble. (Few reports going around that we baulked at that fee).

After the huge fee paid for so called proven talent in Di Maria who was 'world-class' and how that turned out. We're probably better off going this way now. Back to our old ways I guess.

Because I'm clutching at straws trying to justify this buy, help me out here.

Have faith in LVG and the club scouting system. Monaco also obviously think highly of him - when was the last time you heard of add on payments being dependent on winning the ballon d'or? His temperament and attitude (which is usually what holds back talented players from reaching their potential) both seem excellent as well from the reports about him.

Also, just to touch on as well.

It's almost unheard of in any modern day transfer where negotiations did not involve a clause, installment or bonus of some sort. Young players or otherwise. The more touted the player, the less likely he is to go for an extraordinary sum in cold hard cash. It just doesn't happen as much. The fee reported only represents the total agreed to overall, not what is paid outright.

Therefore, from an objective viewpoint, this isn't really that much of a gamble. It's calculated in a way that the additional fees are predicated on the player's success, rather than total club valuation. If he doesn't hit certain milestones, that's a saving just shy of £15m. For one of Europe's sought-after young talents.

And this isn't even taking into account the months - if not years - watching him, several times over, compiling more and more information.

Comparing to cost of transfer record won't give the complete picture IMO.

Even if you do then Tyton's Ronaldo fee post is wrong as Ronaldo went for world record fee.

That's exactly the point, dude. He was the best striker to ever play the game at that point. That's what world record fee used to get you.

Now half a world record fee gets you 19 year old guy without hair on his balls.

Very true. Whats also very true is that the average British footie fan has a very parochial mentality. **** most of the TV and media pundits rarely if ever do know more than a few foreign players who play in foreign leagues.

With Darmian in the WC I remember most pundits even wondering where the **** he came from ... when most of us who watch other leagues knew him quite well ...

You do realise you tend to change your tune quite often and/or appear to be confused about what you really want?

I mean, bearing your pronouncements about magical players, players who play in their best positions, developed players, properly replacing ADM (all of which I agree with btw) one would have thought that REUS would have been IT for you. And you would be right. Yet here you are calling buying him for 60m a huge gamble!

The mind boggles.

This discussion is getting real tiresome...

Was it an exorbirant fee for a teenager? Maybe yes because its largely based on potential and players that look world-beaters at 19 can be completely average at 25.

Does it matter? No because United have a fuckton of cash and they needed a striker in the Martial mould. Better to see quality on the pitch rather than piles of money remaining in the bank like Arsenal. If Martial fails, laugh a bit then buy someone else

Buying Reus is a huge gamble though for £60m, for that amount of money, his injury record is bad which is the main thing for me in why it would be.

But Wenger will come out and say he had the chance to buy him when he was 18 years old!

Why? Why do you have to justify? Just enjoy the player playing for the club. I would rather argue about player' quality on field rather than "we have 200M sitting in the bank and we can buy anyone" like certain Arsenal fans do (not aimed at all Arsenal fans, I have seen few using that argument and it's ridiculous).
