The Manchester United Thread

Come on it's only Liverpool. Not dangerous at all (H)

Kinda worrying about the players moral though. Reports about them not happy are never good.

The perception of Rooney is so skewed it's unreal. The problem is that when he was younger, he looked like he was going to develop into one of the absolute best players in the world, a player who had everything and could end up being England's best ever. He didn't live up to that so people **** on him for it, despite the fact that he was still WC. Then he played in a front 3 with Tevez and Ronaldo and completely held his own. And people got back on the Rooney hype train because here's England's finest playing with the best of them. He didn't turn out to be as good as Ronaldo, so suddenly he's **** again. People are judging him against arguably two of the best players to ever set foot on a pitch, and not realising why that's so absurd.

It's a bit like when you see those brats on Super Sweet 16 sob because they only got £200k Ferrari.

Completely spot on. Also people always forget how much he was sacrifices as in not playing in his best position because of his immense work rate when he was younger. He used to cover full backs and make sliding tackle near LB position.

He could have ended up being better but the way some people talk about it's a big shame. Always downplaying his achievements even worse is ManUtd fans doing it when he has played all his best years for United and at the same time cheering Ronaldo who couldn't wait to get out of the club.

Unless he no longer wants to go home, De Gea would be an absolute fool to himself to extend regardless.

But enough on that. Is he back in the squad for Sat'day? Playing him would be a major gamble.

Everything is settled and he knows for sure he will be United player this season, there wouldn't be any gamble in playing our best GK. Not playing him would be a gamble.

I meant from the very fact he's played no games this year. (And hardly been training with the first team.).

Yeah, he played through the week but that was like a glorified training session as he had jack to do.

I'm with you on you have to play your best players. But goalkeeper is the one position you can't come in cold on. You need to be lpaying regularly as you just can't replicate what you face in a game and the timing of everything.

He may well come in and play a stormer having said that, but it's a big gamble to me. Same as I'd love Sakho to play for us in place of Lovren. But I'm not sure I'd gamble on him having not played at all since pre-season in this game of all games.

he's just played a full game with the international side. I think he's going to be ok. Too much is being made of this

Hardly training? He was training with the first team and he played for Spain.

For GK match fitness is not an issue as they won't be running all the game. Like Mike said, this is just silly thing to worry about.

If we agree on GK should start playing regularly thing then it has to start somewhere and there are no easy games in PL.

For GK match fitness is not an issue ..... .

Reports have been he hasn't been training with the first team much of the week. (And even on here we're told Van Gaal keeps his match squad group small and if you're not in it; you're not in it. I just viewed the Macedonia game as an extension of that as he literally had jack to do. A couple of uncontested crosses was about the extent of his nights work.

Match 'sharpness', not fitness would be what would concern me. (Only mentioned Sakho as someone else I probably wouldn't risk. Sorry for the confusion over fitness with a goalkeeper.).

But then I'd be hard pressed to leave him out over Argentine.

Might be being blown out of proportion. Might be a legit concern.

If he plays, we'll know come around 7:15 Sat'day evening whether it was the right move or not.

Rafael was not part of any match day squad for more than 6 months but he was training with first team. De Gea was training just that Van Gaal was not entirely convinced that he is focused enough.

Now we all know what is fate is at least till May, it shouldn't be an issue and also he had a nice break with National team for 2 weeks.

I would prefer half fit De Gea over Romero and even Johnstone over Romero

That... doesn't suggest he will sign a new contract at all. All he said is that De Gea won't be free, which is true because RM are likely to pay him an absolutely huge signing bonus and probably a large one to his agent as well. ****** ESPN.

To add to the previous conversation.
“No definitely not [signing in January],” Perez said, and when pushed on what Madrid’s next move might be he added: “We are not contemplating that he comes next year.

“He is there and we have three very good goalkeepers. We have not told him not to sign [a new deal]. He has to do what is best for his career. It’s very difficult that he does nothing for a year. When people say: ‘wait for a year and then he comes free’ that has never happened with any big player.”

Nothing in particular that has made me just say this but...

Van Gaal just seems a bit of a ******** all round to me.

I don't think LVG is a bad person at all, I just think he's very strict in his ways of thinking and philosophies. (Quite a few I don't agree with I might add).

But for example look at Chris Smalling pre LVG-era and look at him now. Also how Shaw has started off this season as well. LVG does good work undoubtedly and knows his stuff but his style of management doesn't win over all players. (Some ones who are too lazy may I add to want to do it, Zlatan *cough cough*).

Having said all that I think this season is a big one for him, don't think another 4th will be looked on well at all. I was expecting a title-push.

Don't know how I feel about Giggs becoming manager after LVG when ones like Ancelotti may well be available.

I'm just not comfortable with someone who has so little managerial experience (even if he will learn 2-3 years from LVG) becoming the United manager. Regardless of how he's a legend, I feel all his history with the club is just extra pressure to do well if he takes it.

I don't really know the bloke so can't comment too much. Just seems to fall out with quite a few players. Seems overly strict in some ways.

He might be a lovely old cuddly fella for all I know though

It won't be LVG's decision. I'd put money on Pep getting it if free.

I think anyone who employs Pep has to be committed to both give him time and let him build from the ground up.

Instilling the way he wants to play needs to be implemented right through the club at every level and takes time changing the philosophy of players. Barcelona he landed on his feet in taking over a club well versed in that. I know Rijkaard in particular deviated from that. But the ethos layed down by Cruyff has been pretty consistent right through. And he's run into his own highly publicised problems at Bayern trying to adapt them.

He'd be who I'd be putting my money on too if a gun was to my head and he'd be a great fit long term. But he'd need to be afforded the time and patience to implement his philosophy.

Hypothetically, if Van Gaal failed to see out his planned tenure and was canned after this year; and the Glaziers then dumped a shed load more on top of what he's gone through (regardless of the net deficit, it's still a massive outlay on acquisitions); you wonder if they'd have the patience to stand by someone like Guardiola to do his thing if he didn't get immediate results to satisfy them?

I think if United under lvg don't show signs of improvement this season then lvg might go at the end of the season. Pep will be out of contract and I don't think United will want to miss out on him especially if city are sniffing around. It would be a fanboys dream if giggs was manager with g nev as no2.

LVG has effectively built that groundwork. That is the one thing he has always been an undeniable success at. Pep got that at Bayern and Barca because of work done by LVG.

If anyones interested, just put up in the L'pool thread, an excellent pre-match discussion between 3 Scouser's from 'The Redmen TV' and a United lad from one of your fan channels, covering just what the game means to both clubs and just how big it still is and always will be (in case anyone is still in ANY doubt); the pros and cons of both sides, poor state of both clubs currently to what they should be, and views on the match in general.

Interesting POV from the United fan over Van Gaal and DDG and whether he'll play or not too.
